This Home Church manual was produced to elaborate the expected growth progression
from being a new convert to becoming an active lay minister, which should be the desire
of every Christian.
The content of this booklet is a collection and adaptation of several successful structures
and formats in use by other churches and ministries. We would like to specially
acknowledge Christ Embassy, Daystar Christian Centre and several of our members who
provided bulk of the materials used in this manual.
Tony Aleogena-Raphael
Lead Pastor
The Home Church is basically a microcosm of our Mother church. It serves as a platform
for our church to grow smaller and larger at the same time and provide opportunity for
the extension of our ministry across the city while developing and grooming our
members into places of leadership and maturity. A Home Church is not independent of
the Mother church therefore it depends on her for its effective functioning. The programs
and activities of the Home church are based on the guidelines given by the mother
church, Home churches are therefore neither autonomous nor interdenominational and so
should be careful not to address, organize, relate to, or parade them as such.
The Home Church system is the operational base of our Church. Among the many
important functions of the HCS is that it serves as the arms and feet for effective
personalized ministry to the individual within and outside our church. They demonstrate
the practical love of Christ amongst themselves and their community and follow – up
guest and new converts in our church.
New comers to and members of the Home church must be duly encouraged to attend
main services at the mother church. We recognize that this may not be immediately
possible for some people but with careful persuasion and encouragement they eventually
would do it.
We are change agents wherever we are: at work, home, school and in church. However,
The Home Church is the drilled down system within our church structure that provide a
specific opportunity/platform where everyone can develop themselves, exercise their
gifts and bring change to our communities.
The Home Church System is the vehicle for bringing change to our communities.
The concept of the small group or our Home Church system, as we call it, dates back to
the early days of Israel when Moses served as their leader (Ex. 18:13-17, 21-22). Our
Lord Jesus Christ also demonstrated the effectiveness of this principle in increasing
leadership and ministerial efficiency by breaking people into small groups in order to
minister to them (Matt. 13:16; 17:24-25; Mk. 6:39-41). After the exit of Jesus, the
Apostles, practiced the art of “breaking bread from house to house” in order to fulfill the
purposes of the Church (Acts 2:42-47, 12:12). Also references to the Home Church
system are common in the epistles (Rom. 16:3-5; I Cor. 16:19). The system provides
To provide a structural framework for fulfilling the five purposes of the Church.
To provide a platform for serving our community and bringing change to our City, one
neighbourhood at a time
To provide opportunity for personal pastoral care for individual member of the church
through visitation, bible study, and prayers.
To serve as a dragnet for reaching the un-churched and other prospective members.
To provide support for members through benevolence and ministry extension
responsibilities/initiatives like ceremonies and dedications.
For members’ personal development and subsequent integration into core leadership of
the Church through practical measurable service.
To the Ministry:
There will be growth numerically and spiritually.
People have a sense of belonging and the workload of the ministry is effectively shared.
There is multiplication of results (Lev. 26:8).
Broad-based city-wide ministry impact (Acts 5:42).
OUR GOAL
Our goal is to take our city for Christ, one neighbourhood at a time.
We will do this by planting a church on every short street in Calabar so that everyone in
this city will be within a walking distance of our ministry reach (Influence) and through
the system bring chance to the entire city.
OUR STRATEGY
Occupation by saturation
Home churches have liberty, to a considerable extent, to design and plan their own
activities and tweak their meetings to reflect their unique identity but the following
activities are recommended.
Please note that the details of these meeting are discretionary, as the pastor is led
by the Holy Spirit. However, all meetings must be purposeful (i.e.: church growth
and development or nourishment of the saints).
Welcome – Make everyone welcome, use ice breakers, crack jokes and create a
relaxed atmosphere
Worship – A short period of prayer and worship
Word – Study and discussion of the weekend teaching
Works – testimony, giving, eating & prayer Etc.
The meetings are designed for one hour thirty minutes. Efforts should be made to
keep within the time limits.
Please note that our primary focus at our meetings is the people and not the
event
Preparation
Edification
The primary role of the pastor is facilitation and stirring the members to
illumination.
Your depth in study and understanding of the subject will come from the
insightful contribution you make to bring clarity where needed and to draw out
the life application principles.
Our meetings are not bible study meetings, they are fellowships therefore
relationship building is the most critical aspect.
Make room for activities that develops friendship and bonding amongst members
Apart from the regular weekly meeting formats, other kinds of meetings are suggested
from time to time. The aim is to break monotony as well as broaden the scope of our
attention and activities. Some of the other types of meetings include:
This kind of meeting may be very useful in helping the Home church develop
their goals and plans for the quarter and pray towards its accomplishment as a
body. The Home church pastor must lead this kind of meeting. The Pastor must
guide the members to arrive at a common goal(s) for the period and once the
goals are agreed he/she must passionately galvanize the whole church to achieve
them.
Prayer Outline
N/B: Have them write their points down and prophesy over them. This could increase
expectation.
Points of Note
- Your confidence rubs off on your members
- Talk confidently but yet be very courteous & humble
- Prepare spiritually and otherwise before the meeting. Decide how you will direct
the meeting ahead and what you expect the outcome to be.
- Determine the result of your outreach program at this meeting.
- Give the members responsibility and encourage them, e.g.: the 5 Team leaders
etc.
- Let them pray in the Holy Ghost and call forth resources required
- Write them letters appointing them to various committees (if need be) and give
them the letters at the meeting or during service with their names written on them
- Discuss the various things that need to be done within the month
OUTREACH MEETING
It should be the result of the prayer and planning meeting. The pastorate and the
entire church is corporately going out with you for Soul winning, it can be done in a
lot of forms viz: Breakfast Outreach meeting, Dinner Outreach meeting, Musical
The use of banners around the church premises and outreach venue is
encouraged.
It should be included in the announcement and corporately prayed about.
At least one day before the outreach program should be set aside for a fasting
and prayer Rally and in the evening the fast will be broken with prayers and
breaking of bread i.e. communion.
The HCCC should be carried along to ensure full support and the planning
details shared especially to establish anticipated attendance and enhancement
of content where needed.
Be reminded that the primary aim of the program to impact your catchment
area.
TARGET/PROCEDURE
- As the Church Pastor: be decently dressed. Be brief and straight to the point.
Avoid unnecessary showmanship and grandstanding.
- Call for the sick: You must call for the sick, do not be afraid for it is not by
might, not by power, but by my spirit, says the lord. If they bring someone who’s
blind or deaf, it’s the same spirit. You have the anointing to make a blind man
see; it’s the same anointing upon the Lead Pastor.
- Bless your members after the program.
- Bless your community.
Finally, please note that Home Churches can come together to organize outreaches
Jesus said, “By this shall all men know that you are my disciples if you have love, one to
another”. In other words, our actions will always speak louder than our words. A Home
Church must operate as a missionary outpost of C-cubed. In warm fellowship and
care for one another they must commit themselves to reaching others in their
community with the love of Christ. They must constantly be on the lookout for
prospective converts, pray for them, meet them at the point of their needs and invite them
to their church meetings.
All the members must regard the church, as a missionary squad or unit. It
automatically has become God’s house or operating headquarters in that place. The
Home church must have an outreach mentality. It should design its meetings, and
programs with an evangelistic flavor. Our message and testimonies should lead new
converts to Christ. Members of the church must be encouraged to look around for
potential converts that would be invited to the meeting.
The first step would be to develop a relationship (Friendship evangelism) between that
prospective convert and the members or a member of the church. This doesn’t need to
take a very long time. It just needs sufficient communication to warrant the expectation to
honor an invitation or to open a good discussion on any good subject without an
argument. The next step would be to bring this person to the church group. During the
meeting as the new comer witness love among the members, hears the testimonies, the
message, and observes commitment of the members in prayers, the power of the lord will
come upon his heart. It is obvious that he will commit himself to the Lord and receive
eternal life.
After this meeting he must not be left to himself. The leader should personally introduced
to him or her, and then ask him how he felt about the meeting. Does he/she have any
question? Then encourage him to come to the next meeting. He should then be introduced
to the rest of the members as a new member. It is important to say here that he may still
need to be brought to this next meeting by one of the members. This will let him know
that his coming really matters to others. During this meeting he must be made very
comfortable. He should feel free to participate like everyone else. After the meeting the
leader or assistant should ask him, if he had any personal problem needing prayers. If he
does, then he or she should pray with him there, expecting answers. In this way he would
feel really cared for.
FELLOWSHIP MEETINGS
This meeting can be patterned in a lot of ways. It could be a picnic. You can decide to
have a combined event as a Section or even the entire Zone, making the family
bigger. It helps to get the members of the Section or Zone acquainted with one
another. It can also be a small forum of ‘Get Acquainted Special’ for the people who
were added to the church for that month. Whatever the format the meeting must have
Important Notes
Please note that all church leaders should ensure that they participation in the
monthly Church Leadership program (Regroup) and others such as Church
Leaders’ Refresher Course and Advance Leadership Training Conference).
These Programs are designed to acquaint the Church Leaders with our
doctrines and train them in leadership.
Once a Church Leader is not always a Church Leader. Attendance at this vital
meetings count if you want to retain your position and grow
Record Keeping
Record keeping entails the storage of vital information at one’s disposal for
reference purpose. Information is obtained from human memory, taken from
printed matter or electronic devices. Information stored or preserved is used for
the benefit of all, now and in the future.
Every Home Church should have a Secretary who compiles and record vital
information for the Church. They should complete report forms and turn them in
on-time and regularly, at the prompting of the church pastor, update HCCC at all
times of developments within the church.
LEADERSHIP COMMUNITY
The leadership community is the place for active small group leaders to gain personal
support, expand their vision, develop ministry skills, and intern new apprentices into
active leadership.
Personal Support: This is the time for the shepherds of the church to
become sheep and be cared for.
Expand Vision: A place to express our core values, paint the big
picture, and plan for future growth in ministry.
Develop Skill: Time is set aside to train and prepare people to use
their leadership gifts for effective service
A leader is one who shows the way; one who guides and directs. Leadership is the
process of guiding, directing and commanding others to achieve a desire goal or vision.
In your church, you are leading, guiding and directing people to accomplish certain
things. The ability with which you do that, decides how far our church will go. Your
ability as a leader determines what you can produce and accomplish. We need to
recognize that leadership is the key to fulfilling visions and produce results.
A leader is one who knows where he is going and carries others along with him.
They are people with vision who get involved with fulfilling the vision. Leaders are
consumed with getting things done and accomplishing their goals.
Leadership is developed not discovered. It is not something that leaders have but
something they become. Leadership is a process. An understanding of leadership builds
on these five fundamental ideas.
1. Leadership moves the group towards its goal.
2. Leadership builds on meaningful relationships with others
3. Leadership motivates the group members to achievement
4. Actions or attitude that obstructs the objectives of the group do not constitute
Leadership.
5. Leadership is influence. It is more than holding an office.
A Leader is:
Bold. He is not afraid of making mistakes. He uses his mistakes to make proper
adjustments and continue on towards the vision and the fulfillment the goal.
He is not afraid of bearing responsibilities. He takes deliberate steps with others to
achieve his goals. A good leader sees work as a means of achieving specific
goals.
He is a through organizer and a keeper of meticulous records.
He is committed to the vision. Another word we could use here is ‘persistence’. A
leader endures, sticks to it and would not quit. Leaders deal with problems rather
than giving up on them. With a good leader, there is no such thing as failure –
there might be mistakes and setbacks but never failure.
There is no way that this can stop because he is committed, he is going for it
and he is not going to quit. This is his mentality.
A leader enjoys his work. He is not ‘suffering through’. He is not doing what he
has to do, but what he wants to do. A leader enjoys and actually has fun doing
what he does.
Every Home Church pastor, Huddle Coach and Network Leader has a role to play in the
achievement of the vision of the church. Our main goal is changed lives. Therefore
everyone in leadership capacity is responsible for the achievement of this goal. As a
leader, you are responsible for the growth of your church, its expansion and the
development of your members. Their absence from a meeting should affect you.
You must have great concern for your church and members. The Apostle Paul had great
concern for the Israelites. In Romans 9:1-3 he said, “I say the truth in Christ, I lie not,
my conscience also bearing witness in the Holy Ghost, that I have great heaviness and
continual sorrow in my heart. For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for
my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh.” He said he wished he could be accursed
from Christ for the sake of his brethren. He had genuine love for them. He wanted to see
them grow unto maturity. He did not deny his responsibilities. He knew that the spiritual
growth and development of the brethren depended on him. He was addicted to them. This
is the kind of attitude we should have for our church and brethren. Your responsibly is
more than holding church meetings every week or organizing programmes. Those are just
strategies in accomplishing the goal.
Follow up is vital part of the church system. It involves the conservation, the
maturing and the multiplication of the fruit of evangelism. Colossians 1:28 must ever
be two-fold commission:’ we proclaim him, admonishing (that is evangelism) and
teaching everyone with all wisdom (follow up) so that we may present every one perfect
in Christ. The early Christians were not only concerned with the winning of the lost, but
also with their establishment in the faith, attachment to local fellowships (i.e. Church
systems) and spiritual growth.
We follow up a new convert in order that God may be gloried, as Christ is being formed
in him, uniting him in the local body of believers and eventually reaching out to others
through him. Our aim in follow up should always be not merely to win lives to
Christ, but also to train them into those who will go out and win others. We believe
of course that those whom God saves, God is well able to keep (Jude 24) yet we see in
the book if Acts how the Apostle Paul nevertheless showed deep concern for those who
Anyone who successfully joins our leadership community is one who has made the
transition from “Come & See” to “Come & Follow Me” to “COME & DIE”.
We demand an unwavering commitment to the fulfillment of God call and vision for our
church. We’ll not hesitate to drop anyone we consider a log in the wheel of progress.
Having a responsibility, and being committed to that responsibility, are two different
things. You could have a responsibility without being committed to it. The word
‘commitment’ means to entrust, to put into charge or trust. Your commitment to your
responsibility is very vital. Commitment is from the heart. You have to decide to be
committed to your responsibility. The Apostle Paul made a statement in 1Timothy 1:11.
He said, “According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to
my trust.” He recognized that the gospel was committed to him and he took the
responsibilities upon himself.
Become more committed to your church members, to the work you are involved with.
Get in touch with what is really happening to your members. Be informed. Proverbs
27:23 says, “be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds”.
How much time do you really spend talking with your members? You don’t necessarily
have to sit down in a counseling appointment. Get interested in them, find out what’s
happening to them, how they are doing in their jobs and in their families. Find out what
their needs are and help them to meet them because, by this shall men know that we are
the Lord’s disciples if we have love one another (John 13:35).
APPRENTICESHIP
Qualifications: Apprentices are willing to join the leadership community and submit to
the training process provided by a small group leader. They must demonstrate a variety of
attributes and aptitude:
Love: Coach the group members to use their spiritual gift with one as a team as
well as their extended families and community
Serve: Help them share and be the “good news” so that they inspire others around
them to move towards becoming Christ’s disciples and into the church.
Develop a prayer journal for all the people in your small group.
Study and prayerfully prepare for your weekly meetings.
Ensure that members and guest are visited and cared for.
Faithfully attend church services and leadership community activities.
4. Reproduce yourself: The litmus test for your leadership is how well you
reproduce new apprentices. Train an apprentice who will begin another group.
1. Troubleshoot small group’s problems: The Huddle Coach uses problem solving
technics to:
Help HCP formulate goals and plans. Monitor the implementation process.
Encourage and affirm pastor’s effectiveness and reproduction
Attend each Home church every third to sixth meeting and personally debrief the
performance of the group
Help leaders to discern group and individual needs. Ask probing questions to
enable leaders to identify priorities and determine the next steps to be taken.
Guide leaders to facilitate the use of spiritual gifts in their group
3. Cultivate Apprentice Leaders. To prepare new leader, the huddle will want to
Help HCP identify and invest in potential leaders. Meet periodically with
potential apprentices from all the Home Churches under his supervision and give
vision for future ministry possibilities.
Evaluate and approve potential small group apprentice proposed by leaders under
him. Follow-up apprentices in the launching their groups and assist HCP in
identifying and encouraging others to use their gifts.
Multiply himself by developing someone from his huddle who can serve as a
supervisor.
All leaders in the Home Church system are expected to attend a monthly breakfast
meeting hosted by the Lead Pastor called REGROUP. This meeting is crucial for
mentoring, impartation and leadership bonding
In order that the Church Ministry might effectively fulfill the purpose for which it was
created, there has to be a clearly laid-down organizational structure. Churches are to
adhere strictly to this structure. This organizational structure spells out the duties or
responsibilities of every sphere of operation in our Home Church System.
The entire Home Church System is to be managed by the Home Church Coordinating
Centre (HCCC). This Executive body ensures the smooth organization and
information dissemination within the system. The body report directly to the Ministry
Team Pastor. To function effectively the HCCC should have the following offices;
o Director
o Assistant Director
o Secretary
o Programs Coordinator
o Welfare liaison Officer
o Follow-up Coordinator
o Head, Publicity and Library
Director:
1. Planning and executing goals and objectives set by the pastorate for the Church
Ministry.
2 Producing Ministry-wide reports on all churches, section and zones for the
pastorate
3. Collating and reviewing reports from all churches, section and Zones
4. Monitoring growth and initiating extension program.
5. Maintaining communication and liaising with the other HCCC officials.
Assistant Director:
The Secretary
1. Sees to the regular collection of the duties and generates funds for the Church
Ministry
2. Keep records of all financial transactions
3. Co-signs and disburses funds on behalf of the Centre
4. Performs any other duty assigned by the Director
5. Ensure that offering is taken and accounted for at all church meetings, and record
all income in the center register at HCCC.
6. Provide regular financial report the Director of HCCC and the pastorate.
