In Vienna, during Mozart’s time, theatre works set in Turkey, Persia, and Northern
Africa were tremendously popular. Mozart's opera The Abduction from the Seraglio was
no exception and was a huge success. During his lifetime, the work was performed
repeatedly in Vienna and throughout German-speaking Europe. It was premiered in
July of 1782, just one month before his marriage to Constanze Weber.
The overture is bright and cheery, and audiences undoubtedly loved Mozart's use
of “exotic” Turkish percussion, which included bass drum, triangle, and cymbals (a
definite deparcure from his normal instrumentation!).
Because Mozart's original overture leads directly into the opera, an ending was
composed for concert performances by Johann Andre, a legendary music publisher
who purchased @ quantity of Mozart's manuscripts from his widow in 1799.
