Grade 11 Matrices

This lesson plan aims to teach students about matrices through three specific objectives: 1) identifying singular matrices where the determinant is zero, 2) obtaining the inverse of non-singular 2x2 matrices, and 3) using the matrix method to solve simultaneous equations. The lesson provides examples of calculating the determinant and inverse of 2x2 matrices. It explains that a singular matrix has no inverse while the inverse of a non-singular matrix is calculated by dividing the adjoint matrix by the determinant.

Calculating the Inverse of a Matrix

To find the inverse of a Matrix, you will first need the determinant of the Matrix and the Adjoint
of the Matrix. We have already looked at finding the determinant of a Matrix, so let’s look at
finding the Adjoint of a Matrix.

Example:

Solution:

Step 1: Find the determinant.

Step 2: Interchange the elements of the leading diagonal.

Step 3: Change the signs of the elements of the non-diagonal.

Step 4: Divide each element by the determinant.
