The Present Continuous Tense
Formation: AM, IS, ARE + Verb(infinitive) + ING

(+) I am studying now. He is working in a sports shop this summer. They are always talking
loud.
(-) I am not relaxing. He isn't sleeping. We aren't flying to Rome tomorrow.
(?) Are you having a drink? Is she taking a bath?

Adverbs of time: now, at the moment, at present, currently, always (annoying habits)

Use:
1. Activities happening now, at the moment of speaking
- Listen! Someone is trying to unlock the door!

2. Temporary activities, happening „around“ the moment of speaking (трае привремено)


-We are studying British poets this semester. ( самоова полугодие)
-They are painting the kitchen these days.

3. Pre-planned future arrangements (однапред испланирани/закажани идни


аранжмани, состаноци, активности...)
-Mr Holmes is flying to Geneva on 20th January.
-The manager is coming for inspection on Monday.

4. Annoying habits and negative aspects , with ALWAYS ( nekoja navika sto ne iritira kaj
drugite)

-Little Tomy is always leaving his toys around the room.

The Present Simple Tense


Formation: Verb (infinitive) + s/es (only III person singular- HE, SHE, IT...)

(+) I study medicine. He plays table tennis in his free time. Dogs bark.
(-) I do not like black coffee. He doesn't sleep in the afternoon. We don't wash our hair every
day.
(?) Do you take sugar in your coffee? Does she go to work by taxi?

Use:
1. routines, habits, repeated activities, everyday actions....
-We go to school every day. She cleans the house once a week.

2. Facts about a person that are true for a longer time period
-He is English. He lives in London. He has two children. He doesn't play cricket....

3. general truths and facts (општопознати факти и вистини)


-The Sun rises in the East and sets in the West.
-Cats chase mice. -Ice melts in water. Dogs bark.

4. itineraries, timetables, schedules, exams/semesters....(возни редови, распореди,


закажани активности, испити/семестри...)
-The History exam takes place on 23 May.
-The bus to Struga leaves every 15 minutes.
