INTRODUCTION :
Ø Multiple: The product of a number by counting numbers are known as the multiples of that number.
Ø Multiples of a given number are all those numbers which are exactly divisible by the given number.
Example : i) Multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, ... and each of these numbers is exactly divisible by 3.
ii) Multiples of 5 are 5, 10, 15, 20, ...
Ø Every multiple of a number is greater than (or) equal to that number.
Ø The number of multiples of a given number is infinite.
Ø Every number is a multiple of itself and it is the least multiple of that number.
Ø Factor: If a number ‘x’ divides another number ‘y’ exactly, then we say that ‘x’ is a factor of ‘y’ and is
represented as x/y.
Example : 6 divides 18 exactly ⇒ 6 is a factor of 18.
Ø The numbers that are multiplied to get the product are called the factors of the product.
Ø When two (or) more numbers are multiplied, then each number is a factor of that product.
Ø Every factor of a number is an exact divisor of that number.
Ø Every factor of a number is less than (or) equal to that number.
Ø Number of factors of a given number is finite.
Ø Even Numbers: The natural numbers which are exactly divisible by ‘2’ are known as even numbers.
Set of even numbers is denoted by the letter ‘E’. i.e., E = {2, 4, 6 ..........}
Ø The difference between any two consecutive even numbers is ‘2’.
Example : 8 – 6 = 2, 20 –18 = 2.
Ø The sum of any two even numbers is even.
Example : 2 + 4 = 6 is even. 50 + 56 = 106 is even.
Ø The product of any two even numbers is even.
Example : 4 × 6 = 24 is even. 12 × 10 = 120 is even.
Ø Odd Numbers : The natural numbers which when divided by 2, leaves the remainder 1 are known as
odd numbers. The set of odd numbers is denoted by the letter ‘O’. i.e., O = {1,3,5.......}
Ø The difference between any two consecutive odd numbers is ‘2’. Example : 7 – 5 = 2.
Ø The sum of two odd numbers is even. Example : 3 + 5 = 8 is even
Ø The product of two odd numbers is odd. Example : 5 × 7 = 35 is odd.
Ø The sum of an even and an odd numbers is odd. Example : 4 + 5 = 9 is odd.
Ø The product of an even and an odd numbers is even. Example : 4 × 5 = 20 is even.
Ø Perfect Number: A number in which sum of all its factors is equal to twice the number is called a
perfect number.

Ø Highest Common Factor (H.C.F.): The greatest number which is the common factor of two or more
given numbers is called Highest Common Factor (H.C.F.) or Greatest Common Divisor (G.C.D.).
G.C.D. can be determined by three methods.
i) By writing all factors
ii) By prime factorisation method
iii) By division method.
1. H.C.F. by using factors:
Example : Find H.C.F. of 8, 12.
Factors of 8 are 1, 2, 4, 8.
Factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12.
Common factors of 8,12 are 1, 2, 4.
∴ H.C.F. of 8 and 12 is 4.
2. H.C.F. by using prime factorisation method : In this method we prime factorise the given numbers
(expressing each of the numbers as the product of prime factors), then take out the common prime
factors and multiply them. That will be the H.C.F. of given numbers.
Example : Find H.C.F. of 48, 52.
Solution : 48, 52 as the product of prime factors.
48 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3.
52 = 2 × 2 × 13.
H.C.F. of 48 and 52 is 2 × 2 = 4.
Note : Two positive integers ‘a’ and ‘b’ are said to be relatively prime or co-primes if the G. C. D. of ‘a’
and ‘b’ is 1. i.e., (a, b) = 1.
3. H.C.F. by using division method: To find H.C.F. of two or more given numbers, divide the greater
number by the smaller one then divide the divisor by the remainder. Go on repeating the process of
dividing the preceding divisor by the remainder, till zero remainder is obtained. The last divisor is the
required H.C.F. of the given numbers.
Example : Find H.C.F. of 130 and 150
Solution : 130) 150 (1
130
_______
20) 130 (6
120
_______
10) 20 (2
20
_______

SOLVED EXAMPLES
1. Find the H. C. F. of 144 and 192 by prime factorization method.
Solution : We first write the prime factorization of each of the given numbers as given below.
2 192
2 144 2 96
2 72 2 48
2 36 2 24
2 18 2 12
3 9 2 6
3 3 3
1
∴ 144 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 3
and 192 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3
We observe that common prime factors are 2 and 3. In these prime factorizations the minimum number
of times the prime factor 2 occurs is four; this happens for 144. Similarly, the minimum number of times
the prime factor 3 occurs is one ; this happens for 192.
∴ H. C.F. = (2 × 2 × 2 × 2) × 3 = 48.

2 18 2 30 2 24
2 12
3 9 3 15
2 6
3 3 5 5 3 3
1 1 1
Thus 72 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 3
120 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 5
192 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 3
The common factors are 2, 2, 2 and 3.
∴ H.C.F. = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 = 8 × 3 = 24.
3. Find the H.C.F. of 101, 573 and 1079.
Solution : 101 = 101 × 1 3 573
∴ 573 = 3 × 191 191
1079 = 1079 × 1
As there is no common factor, so HCF = 1
Remark : Recall that two numbers having no common factor other than 1 are called co – primes.

2. Find the L.C.M. of 18, 24, 36, 45 by division method.
Solution :
2 18, 24, 36, 45
2 9, 12, 18, 45
3 9, 6, 9, 45
3 3, 2, 3, 15
1, 2, 1 5
The L.C.M. is the product of the successive divisors and the final quotients.
∴ L.C.M. = 2 × 2 × 3 × 3 × 2 × 5 = 360.
Note :1) The divisors in all the lines should be prime numbers.
2) The process of division is continued till the line of quotients consists only of the numbers
prime to each other.
3. Determine the L.C.M. of 624 and 936 by division method.
Solution : We have,
2 624, 936
2 312, 468
2 156, 234
3 78, 117
13 26, 39
2, 3
∴ L.C.M. of given numbers = 2 × 2 × 2 × 3 × 13 × 2 × 3 = 1872
4. The students in a class can be divided into groups of 2, 3, 5 and 6. What is the least number of
children this class can have ?
Solution : The least number of children in the class is the L. C. M. of 2, 3, 5, 6. To find their L. C. M.,
we proceed as under:
2 2, 3, 5, 6
3 1, 3, 5, 3
1, 1, 5, 1
∴ L. C. M. = 2 × 3 × 5 = 30
Hence, the least number of children in the class is 30.
Special case (an Important Result): If a and b are two whole numbers such that q is the quotient and
r is the remainder when a is divided by b , then
i) the least number that should be substracted from ‘a’ so that ‘b’ divides the difference
exactly = r.
ii) the least number that should be added to ‘a’ so that ‘b’ divides the sum exactly = b – r.

5. Find the greatest number of 6 digits exactly divisible by 24, 15 and 36.
Solution : The number exactly divisible by 24, 15 and 36 must be their L. C. M. So, we first compute
the L.C.M .of 24, 15 and 36 as under:
2777
360 999999
3 24, 15, 36 720
2 8, 5, 12 2799
2520
2 4, 5, 6
2799
2, 5, 3 2520
2799
2520
279
∴ L. C. M. = 3 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 5 × 3 = 360
Now, greatest number of 6 digits = 999999.
We find that when 999999 is divided by 360, the remainder is 279.
∴ Greatest number of six digits which is exactly divisible by 360 is 999999 – 279 = 999720.
