Stilt houses are houses built on vertical poles. They are
most commonly buit over water, athough they may also
lines. be buit over dit or sand, Humans have been building sit houses
for thousands of years, and today people al over the planet stl
choose to build them. From South East Asia and Papua New
Guinea to West Africa and South America, houses constructed in this style are extremely popular.
Go to the beautiful city of Venice in northern tay, and you will se almost an entire city buit on stilts!
There are many advantages to stit houses. Building on stits helps to protect houses from floods. Stit
houses are not difficult o construct and can be built on land that might otherwise be unsuitable for
housing (eg, hillsides and lakes). The height of stit houses serves to keep out vermin Such as rats and
‘mice, 2s well as other wild animals. Studies have even indicated that living in tit houses lowers the risk of
mosquito bites (and hence the dangerous disease malaria) because mosquitoes ar less likely to enter houses high above
the ground surface!
In Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia stilt houses are common. The area beneath the house is often used for storage or
lounging in the daytime, and sometimes for livestock.
Many Brazilians living along the mighty Amazon river lve in stit houses, as they know thats the only way to prevent their
homes from being destroyed by water when the Amazon floods.
Inthe mountainous Hunan Province in China, the Han, Tuja, Miao, Hui, Yao, Dong and Zhuang peoples have managed to
inhabit the steep mountains by building sit houses.
Today, stit houses are gaining popularity in certain parts of the USA, particularly along the Gulf Coast where the threat of
hurricanes is severe. The reason is that during a hurricane, stit houses do not get the full foree of the wind as it has
somewhere else to pass, namely under the house.
In the future, stilt houses will probably become even more common around the globe. Scientists think that global warming,
will ead to rising sea levels and increased flooding in many cites. In order to deal with this, houses will have to be built on
stilts. Imagine .. one day you might only need to jump out of your window to get your moming shower!

reland is a small island country with a
Jitong history ot invasions and
‘occupations. It is believed that the first
humans to settle in Ireland were Mesolithic
hunters and gatherers who came across
from Scotland in small boats sometime
around 8000 BC. They were followed a
fow thousand years later by Neolithic
settles from neighbouring Britain who
introduced farming and stone buildings.
Later, around 500 BC Ireland saw the
attival of Celtic clans from Europe who
settled on the island for good and who
shaped the future of the country and its
people. The Celts gradually replaced the
language and culture ofthe inhabitants of
the island with their own, They divided the
country into small kingdoms, each of
which was ruled by a king. They made
tools and weapons from bronze and iron
and ate remembered today for their
beautitul musio, art and orafs.
The island continued to be invaded by
various peoples including the Vikings in
the Sth century AD, the Anglo-Normans in
1171 AD, and the English who managed
to bring the country under their control
