Gender Discrimination in Workplaces in the Philippines
Introduction
In the country of Philippines, gender discrimination on workplace is an issue for a long
time and this needs to have more attention and address this said issue. Gender discrimination is
unequal or disadvantageous treatment of an individual or group of individuals based on gender.
The instant case brings to the fore, once more, the pestering issue in our country of
discrimination against women on account of their sex or gender. If in terms of using the laws and
political environment as criteria, the Philippines can be considered the most gender-free country
in the world in terms of treatment of women in government and the workplace. There are laws
that prohibit employers, under pain of monetary and penal sanctions, from discriminating against
women. In a matter of fact Philippines had two lady presidents, congresswomen, female
lawmakers, and the Supreme Court and several key government offices are headed by women.
It’s the same situation in the executive suites of many of the country’s top businesses. In spite of
the improvements in attaining the gender balance, however, Filipino women still struggles for
them to be treated on an equal plain with their male counterparts in the workplace, unless they
work in businesses that are owned or managed by women. Gender discrimination in workplaces
in the Philippines does still exist despite of the laws and acts we have because some people still
believes in man superiority that they can do better than other genders and others are bias on
assessing other genders performance at work.
Counter Argument
Men are stronger men and women are totally not the same especially in doing works
which required skills and strength. Men are known to be physically stronger than women.
Women only knows how to do different household chores which a man can also do. There are lot
of things man can do but woman can't, if a woman does what man's do, it will surely affect the
performance and the result of a certain work. Men are also emotionally stronger that women
which makes them a good leader almost men know how to handle their anger, stress and men are
more likely than women to say that male leaders are more willing to take risks.
According to a survey the percentage shows that 37% of men say about this is true,
compared with 31% of women. In addition, men are more likely than women to say there is no
gender difference when it comes to being honest and ethical and providing fair pay and good
benefits. Men are more productive than women this study shows how many people agreed that
men are truly more productive than women, this study found men to be more productive at work
than women because of these inequities, Hive's research which sampled over 3,000 men and
women across hundreds of workspaces revealed that women contribute 10% more at work than
their male peers do.
This is a world where women cannot outshine men; at least that is what the stereotype is.
Although women can outshine men, it is a typecast that men should not let this happen. This
gender gap occurs because our society allows it. No matter what problems get fixed, there are
always stereotypes and issues that still have, yet, to be solved. The one about men not allowing
women to outshine them still exists today. Men are supposed to be seen as being the best.
However, it can be argued that women are starting to feel the same. A classification that was
once given to men may be slowly becoming something that can be seen in woman. Some
stereotypes are ones that are done for cruel reasons. Although in the past it may have been true in
the past, men not letting women outshine them is not one of them. It used to be that women
could not be better than men because society put women below men. Men were supposed to be
the bread winner and be able to support their wives. If a woman were to make more money than
a man, the status of that man would decline. Times have changed drastically and there are
women today making more money than men. Although it can be argued that men and women are
not at the same level, the gap between them has been reduced. Men do not want to women to
outshine them for reasons other than being cruel. There are exceptions to every case, but for the
most part, it is done without thinking that it can hurt a woman. A man’s ego, and to impress
friends are key factors as to why men try to be superior.
Gender discrimination can be aggressive or subtle, not all discriminating actions are
obvious in the workplace. Below are some gender discrimination examples: Hiring, firing, or
promoting someone because of their gender. Not hiring, firing, or promoting someone because of
their gender. A female works her way up to management finds out that a newly hired male
manager (same position and duties) is getting paid more than she is despite equal qualifications.
A female employee gets a pay cut because she can’t put in as much overtime after just having
had a baby, while a male employee cuts back on overtime for personal reasons with no changes
to his pay. Female employees don’t get to add their husbands to their health insurance because it
is assumed that the husband has his own healthcare benefits, while male employees can add their
wives. Withholding job opportunities from individuals who identify as transsexual or
homosexual.
Your Argument
The issue of gender equality in employment has given rise to numerous policies in
advanced industrial countries, all aimed at tackling gender discrimination regarding recruitment,
salary and promotion. Yet gender inequalities in the workplace persist. The issue of gender
inequality in employment has risen to a high degree of numerous number of policies in the
advanced part of the industrial countries, all people aimed at tackling the issue of gender
discrimination regarding of the following recruitment of the job, salary, and promotion in the
job. And yet gender inequalities in the workplace of the industry still persist until now. That’s
why we should consider the laws about gender discriminations we have and enforce it as
possible. It is written in books and sites, the law has been made for long time and it’s just us
people who need to change the nonsense thinking we have. The laws and acts are created for the
good of the people so there’s no reason not to obey it.
Gender has no bearing on employment or the working environment as long as the
employee possesses the skills that the employer requires. In 2016 the Peterson Institute identified
a significant under-representation of women on corporate boards and leadership positions. They
projected that changing board composition to include 30% female representation could add up to
six percentage points to a company’s net margin. 2014 study found that moving from a single-
gender to blended workplace increases productivity by 41%. Men and women experience
differences in perception in the workplace. According to the book, "Managing in the Age of
Change: Essential Skills to Manage Today's Workforce," by Sophie Hahn and Anne Litwin, an
employee's gender can illustrate differences in perception related to organizational structure,
problem-solving style and view of work-related conflict. Also, differences in individual working
style is notable.
Also there are women and other gender who have unique abilities or quality which is
absolutely compatible to some workplaces. Like for displaying high integrity and honesty, bold
relationship, inspires and motivates others and etc. This was proven by the study made by Jack
Zenger and Joseph Folkman that women got higher percentage than men. It may not sound like a
big thing but when talking about leadership, it is. So there is no reason not to consider it an asset
to the workplace and why would you be so hesitant to hire a person with this such nice qualities.
This said qualities may help the workplace to have more spirit and passion to do the work or job.
Conclusion
Gender discrimination means an employee or a job applicant is treated differently or less
favorably because of their sex or gender and it’s been an issue in workplaces in the Philippines.
Some men may be stronger or more productive compared to women, but it can’t be denied that
women nowadays are already catching up with their male colleagues. And this gender
discrimination must be stopped and create equality to all gender.
Women are the most being discriminated in a workplace because they thought that
women are weaker than men. To stop or lessen gender discrimination, we should give equality,
we must appreciate the strength or work of an individual. In addition, we must enforce the law
stricter and do not set aside this issue like it’s nothing. Especially we should respect of who we
are, because each and every one of us has role to do.
