Welcome to the Arts 9 Project CAP-LRE Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on
Arts of the Renaissance and Baroque Periods

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners
meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and
economic constraints in schooling.

On this tour we will examine and explore the world of Renaissance and Baroque
Art Period. Let’s go!

RENAISSANCE PERIOD (1400-1600)

The word ‘renaissance’ derived from the French word renaitre, which means ‘rebirth’,
signifying how Europe came out of the dark ages, reawakening in art, culture, science,
technology, and music. It was an incredible time of beauty, blossoming with creativity and
curiosity. The Renaissance era also witnessed the discovery and exploration of new continents,
the growth of commerce, and the inventions of innovations such as paper, printing, the mariner’s
compass and gunpowder. In short, it was the period of economic progress.
Renaissance art was characterized by accurate anatomy, scientific, perspective and
deeper landscape. Renaissance paintings depicted real-life figures and their sculptures were
naturalistic portraits of human beings. Architectures during this era was characterized by its
symmetry and balance.

Characteristics of Renaissance artworks (Painting and Sculpture)

- Emphasized pyramid – shaped, vertical and horizontal lines to heightened stability of the
artworks
- Use of symmetry, proportion and geometry
- Rebirth of Humanism – faith in the nobility of man
- Rebirth of Naturalism
- Developed Secularism – non-religious themes

FAMOUS RENAISSANCE ARTWORKS AND ARTISTS

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564)


- An Italian master sculptor. He was also a painter, architect and poet. He was considered as
one of the greatest artists of all time because he exerted an unparallel influence on the
development of western art.
- Born March 6,1475 at Caprese, Republic of Florence, Italy and died on February 18,1564
in Rome.
- Among his outstanding works as sculptor were the following: Pieta, Bacchus, Moses, David,
Dying Slave, Dawn and Dusk, Genesis on the Ceiling (The creation of Adam) and the Last
Judgement.

David – Ancient Greek theme of the


standing heroic male nude. One of the most
recognized works of Renaissance
sculpture, a symbol of strength and youthful
beauty. This artwork shows realism and
highly detailed anatomy.

Leonardo di ser Piero Da Vinci (1452-1519)


- Epitomize “The Ultimate Renaissance Man” because of his famous artworks ever made
during his era. He was considered the master painter. He was also a great scientist,
mathematician and architect.
- Born April 15,1452 in Italy and died May 2, 1519 in France.
- His well-known works were: The Last Supper (the most reproduced religious painting of all
time), and the Mona Lisa (the most famous and most parodied portrait). His other works
were: The Vitruvian Mar, The Adoration of the Magi, and the Virgin of the Rocks.

Mona Lisa – A half-length portrait

because of her enigmatic smile as well as
her unproven identity that have made it a
source of controversy. Da Vinci used

Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino (Raphael) (1483-1520)


- An Italian painter and architect as well of the High Renaissance period. His work was
admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual achievement of the
interpreting the Divine and incorporating Christine doctrines. Together with Michelangelo
and da Vinci, he formed the traditional trinity of great masters of that period.
- Born April 6,1483 in Italy and died April 6, 1520 in Italy.
- His famous works were: The Sistine Madonna, The School of Athens, and The
Transfiguration.

The Transfiguration – The last painting made by


Raphael which divided into two distinct parts. The
upper part depicts Christ elevated in front of
billowing, illuminated clouds and on either side of
him are the prophets Elijah and Moses. In the lower
portion, the Apostles are depicted, trying
unsuccessfully, to rid the possessed boy of
demons. The upper portion shows a transfigured
Christ, appearing to be performing a miracle, curing
the boy, and ridding him of the evil. The painting
shows clarity of the composition.

Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi (Donatello) (1386-1466)


- An Italian sculptor of the Renaissance period best-known for his bas-relief (a shallow overall
carving in sculpture) sculptural artworks.
- Born: Year 1386 and died December 13, 1466 in Republic of Florence
- His works include the following statues and relief: David, Statue of St. George, Equestrian
Monument of Gattamelata, Prophet Habacuc, and The Feast of Herod.

RENAISSANCE ARCHITECTURE
- People widely built civil buildings, villas, and religious buildings using Renaissance
Architecture.
- The plan type is centrally planned, regular, symmetrical and mostly square.
- Geometry and balance can be seen on the buildings.
- Buildings are reasonable and decorated with columns, pilasters, arches, domes.
- Renaissance Architecture is the re-development of Ancient Greece and Roman
Architecture.

Key Structural Elements Features:


- Rounded arches
- Barrel vaults and domes
- In civil architecture, the facade elongated horizontally.
- Facades are calm, symmetrical. There are not many statues or ornaments on the facade.
- People used symmetry, proportion, geometry and regularity as ornamentation on the
facades.

BAROQUE PERIOD (1600-1800)


The word Baroque was derived from the Portuguese word ‘barocco’ which means
“irregularly shaped pearl.” The term baroque has been widely used since up to the 19th century
to describe the artworks produced during this time.
Although always in conflict with the simple, clear and geometric concepts of classism,
the Baroque existed in varying degrees of intensity, from a simple animate movement of lines
and surface, to a rich and dynamic wealth. It was a period of artistic style in exaggerated motion,
drama tension and grandeur
Baroque painting illustrated key elements of Catholic dogma. Sculpture is marked by
dynamic movement, typically larger than life size. Architecture was designed to create spectacle
and illusion. Thus, the straight lines of the Renaissance were replaced with flowing curves.

- Characterize by exaggerate motion and clear detail used to produce drama and grandeur

FAMOUS BAROQUE ARTWORKS AND ARTISTS

Michelangelo Merisi or Amerighi da Caravaggio (1571-1610)


- An Italian artist who wanted to deviate from the classical masters of the Renaissance. He
started out as a specialist in his paintings of still life, especially fruits and became outcast
from his society because of his actions and lack of modesty and reverence for religious
subjects in his own paintings.
- Born September 29,1571 and died July 18,1610.
- Among his famous paintings were: Supper at Emmaus, Conversion of St. Paul, and
Entombment of Christ.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680)


- Italian Baroque sculptor and architect and the last in the list of the dazzling universal
geniuses.
- Born on December 7, 1598 in Naples, Italy and Died on November 28, 1680 in Rome, Italy.
- Among his early works were: The Goat Amalthea with the Infant Jupiter and a Faun,
Damned Soul and the Blessed Soul, Ecstasy of St. Teresa and Colonade.

Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640)


- A Flemish Baroque painter known for his painting of mythological and figurative subjects,
landscapes, portraits and counter-reformation altarpieces.
- Born on June 28, 1577 in and died on May 30,1640 in Netherlands.
- His famous works were: Samson and Delilah, Landscape with a Tower, Portrait of Helene
Fourment, and The Three Graces.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669)
- A Dutch draughtsman, painter and printmaker and considered one of the greatest visual
artists in Dutch art history. He was well-known on painting himself as often as he did for no
not even one artist could do during his time.
- His well- known work was his “Self-portrait in Old Age”.

Diego Velazquez (1599-1660)


- One of the most important Spanish painters of the Spanish Golden Age. His technique in
painting was often showed strong modeling and sharp contrasts of light resembling the
dramatic lighting technique called tenebrism.
- His famous works were: The Surrender of Breda, Las Meninas (The maids of honour), Los
Borachos (The Drinkers), and Maria Theresa.

BAROQUE ARCHITECTURE
- Baroque architecture is found in palaces, churches, and wealthy people’s houses.
- The plan types are elliptical, oval, and complicated.
- People got inspiration from nature when creating some forms.
- People used curved and twisted forms, distorted wavy walls and sense of motion.
- The buildings were massive, bold, dramatic, dynamic, striking, extra ornamented.

Key Structural Elements Features:


- Changed the shapes of well-known columns, arches and other elements. (Twisted and
deformed them)
- There can be unfinished, not completed elements.

- Domes
- Facades are full of movement, wavy and delicately refined.
- The light was an important element to create contrast

One of the famous local churches in the Philippines is Barasoain, now known as Mount Carmel
