In October 2018, fourteen of our Wairoa Middle School students embarked on a two-week
biennial trip to Bali, Indonesia with Wairoa teaching staff. Students and staff had a
memorable learning experience which allowed them to apply their Indonesian language
learning in real and authentic situations. The first week was spent in Ubud exploring the
area and learning from local experts the art of Balinese cooking, making offerings, carving
and playing the Gamelan. Students and staff participated in a 22km mountain bike
expedition and climbed Gunung Batur to watch the sunrise. The second week students and
staff relocated to Amed in the north where they snorkelled, swam, enjoyed boat trips and
continued their daily language lessons.
