Models of Communication - Examples

The document outlines 8 major models of communication: 1) Aristotle's Linear Model which examines 5 elements of communication, 2) Lasswell's Linear Model which analyzes communication using 5 questions, 3) Shannon-Weaver's Linear Model which highlights the role of noise, and 4) Berlo's Linear S-M-C-R Model which explains communication in 4 steps. It also discusses 5) Osgood-Schramm's Interactive Model which looks at encoding, decoding, and interpreting information during conversations, 6) Westley and Maclean's Interactive Model which examines environmental, cultural and personal influences, 7) Barnlund's Transactional Model which highlights private and public cues, and 8) Dance's Helical

Models of Communication

Linear models – only looks at one-way communication.

 Interactive models – looks at two-way communication.
 Transactional models – looks at two-way communication where the message gets more
complex as the communication event (e.g. conversation) progresses.
This article will outline all 8 major models of communication currently studied in communications
courses at college. Here’s a quick summary to get started:
