December, 2019 Time: 3 hours; MM: 100

Name of Instructors: Dr. S. S. Bhatia, Dr. Deepak Gumber, Dr. Ankush Pathania, Dr. Jatinderdeep Kaur, Dr. Sumit

Chandok, Dr. Kavita, Dr. Isha Dhiman, Dr. Anuj Kumar, Dr. Pramod Vaishnav, Dr. Pankaj Narula

Note:
• All questions are compulsory to attempt.
• Attempt all parts of each question at one place.

1. (a) Sketch the region of integration and hence evaluate the double integral
fl f2—y
xy dx dy
Jo

by changing the order of integration. [2+6 marks]

(b) Find the volume of the solid whose base is the region in the xy-plane bounded by the curve
y = 4 - x2 and the line y = 3x, while the top of the solid is bounded by the plane z = x + 4.

[8 marks]
(c) Change the cartesian integral

f fi7P
(x2 + y2) dy dx

into its equivalent polar integral and hence evaluate it. [4+4 marks]
(d) Identify the symmetries of the polar curve r = 1 - cos 0 and hence sketch the graph.

[6 marks]

2. (a) Find the directions in which the function

f (x, y, z) = xeY + z2

increases and decreases most rapidly at the point P(1, In 2,1/2). [6 marks]

P.T.O.
(b) A closed triangular plate in the first quadrant is bounded by the lines x = 0, y = 4 and y = x.
The plate, including the boundary is heated in such a way that the temperature at any point
(x, y) is given by
T(x, y) = x2 + y2 — xy + 1.

Find the temperatures at the hottest and coldest points on the plate. [10 marks]
(c) Let w = f (u) + g(v), where u = x + iy and v = x — iy and i = \/.. Show that w satisfies
the Laplace equation wxx + wyy = 0 if all the necessary functions are differentiable. [8 marks]

(d) For what values of x does the series

converge? And also find the sum of this series. [6+2 marks]

3. (a) Find the Taylor polynomial of order 3 generated by 1(x) = 1 _ x about a = 0. [6 marks]
(b) Show that the function u(x, y) = ex cos y + y is harmonic. Find its harmonic conjugate and
construct corresponding analytic function. [3+5+2 marks]
(c) For the function
(1 + i)x3 — (1 — i)y3
x2 + y2 ' x2 + y2 0 0
