Maths Jss1 Week 3

This document discusses calculating the perimeter of different shapes: - The perimeter of a rectangle is calculated as (Length + Breadth) x 2. - The perimeter of a square is 4 x Length. - The perimeter of a triangle is calculated by adding up the lengths of all three sides. - The circumference of a circle is calculated as 2πr or πd, where r is the radius and d is the diameter. - Examples are provided to demonstrate calculating the perimeters of rectangles, squares, triangles and circles using the appropriate formulas.

PERIMETER OF REGULAR POLYGON

POLYGON is a plane shape bounded by straight edges e.g.

REGULAR POLYGON is a polygon that follows an evenly spaced pattern e.g. a square, rectangle,
equilateral triangle e.t.c.
PERIMETER is the total distance around any object or boundary round a shape. In a circle the perimeter
is called the circumference. To find the perimeter of a locker or desk we use a ruler, tape or string to find
it.
EXAMPLES
Calculate the perimeter by formula
1. Rectangle (length + breadth) x 2 or (L + L +B + B)
E.g. find the perimeter of the object below
A 14cm B

2cm

D E
Solution perimeter = (L + B)2 = (4 + 2) X 2 =6 X 2 =12cm
b. Find the perimeter of a field whose length is 120cm and breadth is 50m.
Solution perimeter = (L + B) X 2 =(120 + 50) X 2 = 170 X 2 = 340m
2. Square: Perimeter= 4 x length or 4L e.g. find the perimeter of the square below 3cm
Solution= perimeter= 4x length=4 x 3= 12cm
3. Triangle: the perimeter of a triangle is adding all the sides of the triangle
A
3cm 4cm

B 5cm C
Solution: Perimeter= A + B + C = (3 + 4 + 5)cm =12cm
4. Circle:- Perimeter= circumference
Circumference= or 2
Solve
Find the perimeter of a square whose length is 7cm
A=4L
A=4 x 7 cm
A=28cm
Find the perimeter of a rectangular field whose length is 150m and breadth is 60m
P=(L + B)
P= (150+60) x 2
P= 210 x 2
P=420m
Find the perimeter of a triangle whose sides are 6cm, 8cm and 12cm
P= A + B + C
P=6 + 8 +12
P= 26m.

Diameter
Radius
Circumference

Find the perimeter of a circle whose radius is 3 cm.

Solution:- Diameter= 7cm = or 3.14
Circum = or 2
Circum = 2 r = 3 =
= x x = 22cm
2. Circumference=

PERIMETER
When perimeter and any of the sides we use the following formula looking for length
We have length = perimeter - 2 breadth
E.g. find the length of a field whose perimeter is 54cm and its breadth is 9m.
Solution
L=
=
Length=18m.

ASSIGNMENT
1. The length of a rectangle is 6cm and its breadth is 4cm. Find its perimeter
2. The perimeter of a rectangle is 24cm, its breadth is 4cm. find its length
3. What is the perimeter of a triangle measuring 4cm by 5cm and 6cm
4. What is the circumference of a circle whose radius is 3 cm
5. Find the diameter of a circle whose radius 1.75cm.
