Lesson 3 – Communication and Globalization

ACTIVITY

Assess your personal preparedness to communicate effectively with persons of different

cultures by labeling each of the following statements as true or false.

False. I enjoy communicating with persons unlike me as much as with persons like me.

True. I am equally sensitive to the concerns of all groups in our multicultural society.

FALSE. I can tell when persons from other cultures do not understand me or are confused by

my actions.

TRUE. Persons of other cultures have a right to be angry at members of my culture.

TRUE. How I handle disagreements with persons from other cultures depends on the situation

and the culture they are from.


ETHNOCENTRISM VERSUS CULTURAL RELATIVISM

Evaluate the extent to which you display culturally ethnocentric or culturally relativistic

tendencies by labelling the following statements true or false. For each statement, provide an

example of behaviors you used when interacting with or attempting to avoid interacting with a

member of another culture. Be specific.

TRUE 1. I would rather communicate with someone like me than with someone unlike me.

I will only communicate to the person who with me in the same vibes, unless they approach me first.

FALSE 2. I can cooperate with people like me, but I find it difficult to cooperate with people

unlike me.

I am just cooperated to the people who like me when it becomes in a serious situation, same as people
who unlike be. Me as a myself, even you like me or unlike me, I will cooperate, because I don’t think
what people think about me.

TRUE 3. I trust those who are like me more freely than I trust those who are different from me.

Truly, completely, fact I will only trust those people who I know his/her whole personality than the
others, I’m a type of person who not easily trusting friend/people around me.
