Overview of Arnis Competition Types

Arnis originated from the indigenous populations of the Philippines who used weapons like rattan, swords, daggers and spears for combat and self-defense. It is known by various names in different regions like eskrima, kali and garrote. There are two main forms of competitive Arnis - anyo which focuses on choreography and is judged on grace, strength and force, and leban which tests agility and reactions through striking opponents. Arnis was declared the national martial art and sport of the Philippines in 2009 through Republic Act 9850. Modern Arnis was founded by Remy Presas.

HISTORY OF ARNIS

ARNIS
• was developed by the indigenous populations of the Philippines, who
used an assorted range of weaponry for combat and self-defense.
Encompassing both simple impact and edged weapons, arnis
traditionally involved rattan, swords, daggers and spears.
• Arnis is otherwise known as eskrima, kali and garrote, and by even
more names in different Filipino regional languages.
Competitive Arnis generally takes one of two
forms: the performance-based anyo model or the
combative leban.
• Anyo competitions are judged on the basis of the overall
choreography of the performances, including the gracefulness,
strength and force employed.
• Leban form tests participants’ agility and reactions, as competitions
are judged based on the number of strikes inflicted. Although most
leban competitions exclude body contact, such as grappling, blocks
and disarming an opponent using the hands or feet, there are some
exceptions where full contact is permitted.

REPUBLIC ACT 9850

• Arnis was declared as the Philippine National Martial
Art and Sport on December 11, 2009, through Republic
Act 9850 signed by Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
