Activity 1

Reading and Writing Skills

1. Why reading is important?

2. How reading skills are essential?
3. How writing skills are important?
4. How reading and writing subject help you?
5. How will you improve your English vocabulary and writing skills?
6. Why books are better than movies?

Answers:

1. Reading makes you an amazing person from a normal person. It brings the joy and thrill of
transporting you to a world which has completely different set of events oblivious of the present
world. Reading is a process which requires your full attention and if done properly, triggers a
series of electrochemical reactions on encountering disparate events in the book. It makes you a
better person. You may not have experienced a lot of things in your life first handedly but it
gives you the advantage of experiencing them-in different modes. Based on what you read,
reading will always make you a better person. It will improve your vocabulary, embellish your
narration and strengthen your skills of analyzing people and situations.
2. Reading not only increases our knowledge but also gives us the ability to reason. It helps us
better grasp things and gives our lives purpose. Reading fosters creativity and intelligence,
encourages original thought, expands vocabulary and boosts memory.
3. Writing skills are one way to become accurate at conveying feelings. Writing helps you
understand the difference between liking someone and being wild about someone. Writing skills
draw the distinction between anger & fury, sadness & melancholy and brazen &
courageous.Simply put, writing skills help you understand life situations and express your
understanding of life situations.
4. Reading and writing is a form of communication, if you can't read or write then you will be
limited in terms of communication. In reading you will be able to receive ideas, and make ideas
of your own by letting the authors ideas inspire you to question, revel, and provoke you. In
writing you will be able to let your ideas be received without misinterpretation; effectively as
well as being concise.
5. There are five ways that you can improve your English writing skills. I actually use these ways to
work on the writing in the other languages I'm learning, so I can confirm that this works (for me
at least). First, try to expand your vocabulary of English. Do your best to learn new words,
difficult or easy. Next, do your best to work on your English spelling. Make sure to practice
spelling words that you find difficult. Spelling is a large part of written English, so it's important
that you try your best to get the spelling of most words down.
6. Books assist you to expand your imagination, are considerably more detailed than movies, help
you write in English more effectively, and have been shown to help you land better jobs. In the
meantime, movies are more socially acceptable, quicker to view, and offer more employment
options. More accurately than any movie will ever be able to, books can express feelings,
emotions, and motivations. A good book can also make you think and feel the same things as
the main character does, which makes the experience much more immersive. A movie just
cannot accomplish that.

Passage 1

An ecosystem is a group of animals and plants living in a specific region and interacting with one another
and with their physical environment. Ecosystems include physical and chemical components, such as
soils, water, and nutrients. These components support the organisms living in the ecosystem.

Ecosystems can also be thought of as the interactions among all organisms in a given habitat. These
organisms may range from large animals to microscopic bacteria and work together in various ways. For
example, one species may serve as food for another. People are part of the ecosystems where they live
and work. Human activities, such as housing developments and trash disposal, can greatly harm or even
destroy local ecosystems.

Proper ecosystem management is crucial for the overall health and diversity of our planet. We must find
ways to protect local ecosystems without stifling economic development.

Passage 3

Garbage to Good

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans create millions of tons of garbage per
year. Of this amount, one-third is either recycled or composted, and just over 10 percent is burned. Over
half of all garbage goes to landfills. Landfills are costly to build and can be a source of pollution.

Efforts have been made to reduce the impact of solid waste on landfills. Many innovative uses for waste
have been developed. One use for waste is to create energy.

When waste is used to create energy, it results in heat or combustible gases. e most common way to
achieve this result is through burning, or incineration. But burning waste can have hazardous emissions,
so strict guidelines must be followed. Before such guidelines were developed, gas emissions were
heavily acidic. is created acid rain that was harmful to both people and structures. Now filters are used,
which make emissions cleaner than most home replaces.

Aside from the emissions that are produced, the residue that remains can be highly toxic and must be
handled very carefully.
The most common method of creating energy from incineration is by using the heat created from
burning the waste to boil water. The boiling water powers steam generators, which make electricity for
homes and businesses.

Today, new ways of using waste to create electricity or fuels are being developed. They are very
complicated. One example is the thermal method, which uses extremely high temperatures without
burning.

The goal is to transform waste into a benefit for us. Sweden has run out of waste to transform into
energy. Now they purchase waste from other countries. Perhaps someday we will also be able to make
total use of our waste.

8. According to the passage, how much of our garbage goes to landfills?

A. one-third

B. 10 percent

C. 50 percent

D. more than half

9. What is does the word innovative mean as it is used in the second paragraph?

A. renewed

B. new methods

C. altered

D. unimaginative

10. What is a positive result of burning waste?

A. Burning waste results in heat or combustible gases.

B. Without filters, burning creates acid rain that is harmful to both people and structures.

C. The heat created from burning waste is used to boil water, which powers steam generators to make
electricity.

D. The residue that remains from burning waste can be highly toxic and must be handled very carefully.

11. Which title would be a good alternative for this text?

A. “Waste Equals Energy”

B. “A Model Country”
C. “A New Way to Generate Heat”

D. “Burning Our Garbage”

Passage 4

Tick Tock

Someone was watching; Savannah felt eyes following her as she wandered through the antique shop.
She glanced over her shoulder to discover her mother wasn’t paying attention, and the shopkeeper was
nowhere to be seen. But still, she sensed the uncomfortable heaviness of someone studying her.

She spun around and saw it—in an obscure corner sat a massive, ornate grandfather clock. e pendulum
swung back and forth, keeping a perfectly steady rhythm. Not a speck of dust marred the flawless
surface of the clock face. Above the case that housed the pendulum, a single, carved eye stared directly
at Savannah.

She couldn’t resist moving forward, the timepiece beckoning her closer until they stood face-to-face.

Tick tock, tick tock. The hands advanced, the pendulum swung, and the eye stared. Savannah shivered.

“Time to leave!” Her mom’s voice called from another area of the shop.

Savannah pivoted and let out her breath. “I’m coming!” Weaving around an ancient trunk and two
unusual watercolor paintings, she hastened toward the main entrance and accompanied her mother
outside.

Eucalyptus trees flashed by the window of her mother’s maroon sedan, their varying shades of gray-
green smeared like paint. A motorcycle zoomed past, causing her mom to swerve sharply, honking the
horn. e car jounced onto the shoulder and skittered to a stop.

Glancing out the window, Savannah gasped as she noticed a single eye glaring at her from between the
limbs of a gnarled oak tree. Her mom twisted the steering wheel, and their vehicle shot back onto the
highway. The mysterious tree disappeared from view behind them.

Tick tock. Momentarily, the faint sound of the swinging pendulum echoed in her mind. Then, it too was
gone. Was she going insane? Savannah contemplated her mom: Mom hadn’t seen the eye, hadn’t heard
the clock. Had it all really happened? Or was it just her imagination?

12. What caused Savannah to wonder if she was going crazy?

A.The trees blurred outside the car window.

B.he saw a single eye in two different places.

C.She heard voices from within the grandfather clock.

14. Which of the following does not contribute to the mood of the story?

visiting a seller's website online, choosing what you want, then ordering delivery of it. The
purchase is made online with a credit card, debit card, or in-person at the time of delivery.
online translates to being online. This encompasses both looking for items online and making
purchases there as well. In other words, even though I may have been shopping online, I didn't
