MTH302 Assignment # 01

1) The document provides details of an assignment for a business mathematics and statistics course including three questions about calculating percentage change in the base of a triangle given a change in area, determining the optimal package mix to maximize profits at a book fair, and comparing two car purchase deals with different discount structures. 2) The optimal solution is to make 125 of the first package to maximize total book fair profits of Rs. 15,000. 3) The second car purchase deal offering a 15% discount for payment within 10 days is more profitable, resulting in a total cost of Rs. 1,360,000 versus Rs. 1,371,192 for the first deal.

Assignment # 01
Fall 2021

Name: Salman khan

Student ID: MC210202853
Q1. The area of a triangle is calculated by formula . If Height of
the triangle is h (fixed) and its area is changed from 30sq.m to 35sq.m. What’s the
percentage change in the base of the triangle?

Solution
FORMULA:
1
A= ×BASE × HEIGHT
2
A1 = 30m2 A2 = 35m2

Let suppose Height is 10m then:

1
A= ×BASE × HEIGHT
2
2A= Base × Height
2A
Base =
H
2 A1
Base1 =
H
Base1 = 2×30m2/10m
Base1 = 60m2 / 10m
Base1 = 6m
So, Base 1 is 6m, now we will find out Base 2 by putting the value of area 35m2.

2A
Base =
H
2A2
Base2 =
H
Base2 = 2×35m2/10m
Base2 = 70m2 / 10m
Base2 = 7m
Base 2 is 7m. Now we will find out % change in base of triangle.
A 2− A 1
% change of base = × 100
A1

7−6
% change of base = × 100
6
% change of base = 0.1667 × 100

% change of base = 16.67 Answer

Q2. A school organized a book fair and in this book fair a book seller is selling
his books under the following rules:
There are three different packages available.
First package contains 2 Islamic books, 2 Science books and 2 Geography books, second
package contains 2 Islamic books, 4 Science books and 1 Geography books and third
package contains 3 Islamic books, 4 Science books and 5 Geography books. The book fair
has a total of 250 Islamic books, 300 Science books, and 270 Geography books. First
package makes a profit of Rs.120, second package makes Rs.100 and third package makes
Rs.270 per pack.
How many packs should be made to maximize book fair profits?
What will the profit be?

Solution
Total Islamic books = 250
Total science books = 300
Total geography books = 270

First Package (1st)

Islamic books = 2
Science books = 2
Geography books = 2
Total number of Islamic books = 250/2 = 125
Profit of first pack = 120
Total profit on 125 packs = 120*125
Total profit on 125 packs = 15,000

Second Package (2nd)

Islamic books = 2
Science books = 4
Geography books = 1

Total number of Islamic books = 300/4 = 75

Profit of first pack = 100
Total profit on 125 packs = 100*75
Total profit on 125 packs = 7,500

Third Package (3rd)

Islamic books = 3
Science books = 4
Geography books = 5

Total number of Islamic books = 270/5 = 54

Profit of first pack = 270
Total profit on 125 packs = 270*54
Total profit on 125 packs = 14,580

Conclusion is that we have to maximize pack 125 to get profit 15,000.

Q3. You have been offered two deals for the car worth 1,600,000 that you’re purchasing.
Deal 1: Series discount of 3%, 5% and 7%.
Deal 2: A cash discount of 15/10 [i.e. 15% discount if payment made in first 10 days].
Which deal will you choose and why?

Solution
Deal # 01:
Total worth = 1,600,000
Total cost = total worth (1-d1%) (1-d2%) (1-d3%)
(1-d1%) = 1-3% = 1-0.03 = 0.97
(1-d2%) = 1-5% = 1-0.05 = 0.95
(1-d2%) = 1-7% = 1-0.07 = 0.93
Total cost = 1,600,000 × 0.97 × 0.95 × 0.93
Total cost = 1,600,000 × 0.856995
Total cost = 1,371,192

Deal # 02:
Total worth = 1,600,000
Total cost = total worth (1-d %)
(1-d %) = 1-15% = 1-0.15 = 0.85
Total cost = 1,600,000 × 0.85
Total cost = 1,360,000

I will choose deal number 2 because, deal number is more profitable to me.
