1 - Differences Between API 600 & API 6D

API 600 and API 6D are specifications for steel valves. API 600 covers heavy-duty gate valves for refineries, requiring full-port openings and heavy construction to handle corrosion and erosion. It specifies bolted bonnet gate valves in various pressure classes up to 2500 psi. API 6D covers ball, check, gate, and plug valves for pipelines, allowing for reduced-opening valves from 1/2 to 60 inches in size at pressures up to 2500 psi, with requirements for testing, inspection, and ends. The two standards have some overlapping features but differ in scope, valve types covered, design requirements, and testing specifications.

Table D.1 and Table D.2 list valve body, bonnet and cover materials (ASME B16.34,
Material Groups 1 and 2) along with associated valve trim materials (trim numbers, Table
8) and ASTM A193 and ASTM A194 specification bolting materials. For ASTM A193
and ASTM A194 listed bolting materials in Table D.1 and Table D.2, corresponding
bolting materials listed in EN 10269 may be substituted in accordance with Table D.3.
Materials other than those listed in Table D.1, Table D.2, or Table D.3, are outside the
scope of this standard (see 6.2).
