LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET
Graphing Linear Inequality in Two Variables
Background Information for Learners
This activity sheet serves as self-learning guide for the learners. It
facilitates lesson comprehension as it specifically aims for students’ mastery
on graphing linear inequality in two variables independently with utmost
accuracy.
A linear inequality in two variables can be written in one of the
following forms:
Ax+ By < C Ax+ By ≤ C
Ax+ By > C Ax+ By ≥ C
where A, B, and C are real numbers and A and B are not both equal to zero.
An ordered pair (x,y) is a solution of an inequality in two variables, if
true statement results when the values of the x and y are substituted into the
given inequality.
The graph of any linear inequality in two variables is the set of all points
in the rectangular coordinate system whose ordered pairs satisfy the
inequality. When a line is graphed in the coordinate plane, it separates the
plane into two regions or half-planes and the line that separates the plane is
called the plane divider.
To graph an inequality in two variables, the following steps could be
followed.
1. Rewrite the inequality in slope-intercept form: y=mx+b or its
standard form: Ax + By = C and solve for the intercepts.
2. Plot and draw the boundary line; solid line ( ) if the inequality
is either ≥ 𝑜𝑟 ≤ and broken line (-------) if the inequality is < 𝑜𝑟 >.
3. Use a test point (ordered pair) to determine which side to shade.
Use (0,0) if possible. Replace x and y values in the given inequality.
4. If the resulting inequality is TRUE or solution, shade the side that
contains the test point. If the resulting inequality is FALSE, shade
the other side of the boundary.
Learning Competency with code: The learner illustrates and graphs linear
inequalities in two variables. (M8AL-IIa-3)

Activity 1 WHAT’S YOUR POINT?
Directions: State whether each given ordered pair is a solution of the
inequality. Justify your answer.
1. 2𝑥 − 𝑦 > −3; ( 2, 7) 6. −3𝑥 + 𝑦 < −12; (0,5)
2. 2𝑥 + 5𝑦 >10; ( 0,0) 7. 7𝑥 − 2𝑦 ≥ 6; (-3,-8)
3. 𝑦 ≤ 3𝑥 + 6; (2, -6) 8. 𝑥 + 𝑦 ≥ 8; (5,4)
4. 3𝑥 + 4𝑦 > 12; (4, 3) 9. 3𝑥 + 𝑦 > 6; (0,0)
3 1
5. 9𝑥 + 2 𝑦 < 2; (5 , 1) 10. 2𝑥 + 𝑦 < 7; (3, -1)
Question: How did you determine if the given ordered pair is a solution of the inequality?
Activity 2: Color Me!
Directions: Shade the side of the plane divider where the solutions of the
inequality are found. Show your solution.
1. 𝑦 ≤ 4𝑥 − 5 2. 𝑥 + 𝑦 ≥ 1
3. 𝑦 > 𝑥 − 2
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. Please include this in all Learning Activity Sheets.
4. 3𝑥 − 𝑦 ≥ 12 5.𝑥 + 3𝑦 < 8
Activity 3: Graph and Tell
Directions: Graph and describe the solutions of each of the following linear
inequalities.
1. 𝑦≥2 2. 𝑦 ≤ −7𝑥 + 3
Note: Practice Personal Hygiene protocols at all times. Please include this in all Learning Activity Sheets.
3. 𝑦 < −4 + 7 4. 𝑦 > 𝑥 + 1
3
5. 𝑦 ≤ 2 (𝑥 + 1)
