1. INTRODUCTION
The work procedure includes handling of ground water, surface water in open excavated area
and dewatering from main plant locations by open dewatering method during construction.
The entire excavated area needs to be dewatered to keep the area work dry to the possible
extent. As per the bore log details, the average Existing Ground Level (EGL) is EL 98.500m
(RL 40.10). The sub-soil profile as per the Geo-Technical investigations report for Kaiga-
5&6 (Report no. KAIGA-5&6/DC/10120/03) is Lateritic soil with sand and boulders for the
initial depth of up to 16.5 m followed by Granite rock of various degrees of weathering from
Highly weathered to Slightly weathered. The Rock Quality Designation (RQD) of the rock
was found to be ranging from nil to 100%). The ground water table indicated has been
recorded at depths varying from 1.6 m to 15.5 m below existing ground level.
2. LOCATION:
The Kaiga 5&6 site is adjacent to existing Kaiga Generating Stations Kaiga 1 to4, Karwar
Taluka, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka State and is located on the left bank of River Kali
and about 16 Kms on the upstream of Kadra Dam, which is about 56 Kms on east of Karwar

ii. Construction of sump in the excavated area to facilitate collection of water from
excavated pit will be made at lower most point as per field condition. Tentative location
of Sump is shown in the sketch No. 1.
iv. Providing and laying of ring header around the excavated area and network of pipes to be
connected to pumps for discharge of water collected from the excavated pit. Details are
shown in Sketch 2.
v. Collected Water will be disposed to the nearby natural drain which leads to reservoir
vi. Construction of bunds and peripheral drains to prevent run-off water into the excavation
pit.
vii. Providing energy meter for both electrical and fuel pumps to monitor working hours.
viii. Mobilizing pump operators, supervisors for continuous monitoring of the dewatering
activity on round the clock basis.
5. PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to define the sequential instructions in brief for smooth
execution of Dewatering in all structures and excavation under the scope and to maintain The
construction area reasonably dry by using suitable pumps for bailing out water.
6. APPLICABILITY
This document is applicable for dewatering, collection in disposal of ground water/ surface
water during excavation and other construction activities of main plant buildings.
7. RESPONSIBILITY:
The responsibility of implementation of this procedure for the execution of work lies with
M/S. Bekem-Avantika-Siri (JV) and will be monitored on day to day basis by NPCIL.
The following Indian Standard Codes and referred documents, unless otherwise specified
here, shall be applicable. In all cases, the latest revision of the codes shall be referred to.
9. METHODOLOGY
9.1 Dewatering
i. The excavation and dewatering works shall be carried out in line with construction
drawings issued by NPCIL from time to time.
ii. The excavation will be started from centre of Nuclear Island and gradually proceed
towards the edge. The area mentioned as area 2 (Please Refer Sketch No. 2) will be
taken before monsoon as per the priority. The division of area is made based on the
priority of excavation and dewatering requirement in the present monsoon. However,
the mobilization of adequate numbers of pumps will be made including standby
arrangement. As the excavation progresses from top to bottom, the required number
of sumps to dewater the water. Collected from the excavation pit will be established at
each stage.
iii. The suitable size of sumps shall be made available at the identified locations to hold
sufficient depth of water for pumping and to keep the excavation floor relatively dry
during the entire execution period
iv. The sumps shall be made for all individual pumps and delivery lines shall be
connected to the main header line through flexible hose pipes.
v. The rate of dewatering from the entire sump pump shall be adequate to dewater during
dry season and monsoon. Network of MS/ HDPE/ flexible pipes shall be laid down
with proper support arrangement to discharge the Water.
vi. The water through ring header will be discharged to anearby nallah/low lying area
R1
away from the reservoir and fromthere water will be drained to reservoir.
The Excavation of RB-5 Area will be prioritized and final level will be achieved in stages
by establishing sumps at different elevation during the progress of excavation. The details
of final excavation level as per drawing are as below:
The main plant excavation area is divided in number of areas considering its priority,
location, the founding level to be reached, the time period required for completion of
the work, need for taking up/completion of excavation work in a building to meet the
overall schedule of the project completion.
The excavation work is taken up a month ahead of monsoon and proper planning and
care shall be taken in excavation work. The excavation of soil in the heavy monsoon
period is not possible as the soil becomes wet and cannot be handled by earth moving
equipment’s. Further the loading and unloading of the soil is also not possible. The
movement of dumpers & trucks is difficult and the dump yard will not be fit to receive
heavy loaded vehicles.
Hence, the excavation is planned in priority areas which are to be taken up right from the
beginning. The Main Plant excavation area is divided in following 3 areas.
Area
Buildings Considered Remarks
Demarcation
Area 1 WMP, FOSA 5&6, SREH 5&6, The excavation in this area will be taken up
DYKE AREA, D2O UGP, SRPH, as priority two after area2
FWPH including the tunnel Excavation will becarried out up to existing
lowest level of that area by which gravity
flow of water to natural stream is ensured as
the priority .
The excavation shall be done taking into
account the requirement of ramp/access to
area2
Area 2 RB5, RB6, RAB5, RAB6, The excavation will be taken up on
SAB5A&B, SAB 6A&B,CB priorityone, to meet Project schedule and the
Unit 5 will be always ahead of unit 6. The
dewatering scheme including capacity of
pump is detailed in clause 12 of this
procedure.
Area 3 Turbine buildings 5&6 The excavation in this area will be carried
out up to existing lowest level of that area by
which gravity flow of water to natural stream
is ensured.
The priority will be given for unit 5 structures in all the above areas within the priority mentioned.
Based on the above priority in taking up of work, considering the availability of very short period for
excavation of soil prior to monsoon, the extent of area to be considered for the dewatering scheme is
area 2. The excavation in other areas will be carried out up to existing lowest level of that area by
which gravity flow of water to natural stream is ensured.
The dewatering scheme shall be revisited and developed as the excavation progresses to address
the site specific conditions.
i. This methodology depicts the scheme of dewatering on the available data. The locations
of the sumps and their numbers may vary as per actual requirement.
ii. Sufficient number of portable dewatering Pumps of adequate capacity will be installed.
iii. The fuel driven pumps/ DG sets of adequate capacity and numbers will also be
maintained.
iv. The network of peripheral (Cutoff) drains/ bund 6 m away from the excavation line shall
be made as per the approved scheme to avoid entry of water in to the excavated pits.
v. Discharge pipes from pumps will be suitably connected to ring header and wherever
possible, water will be discharged directly to natural nallah by gravity. It shall be ensured
that at no point of time the discharged water shall not return to excavation pit.

vi. The dewatering pumps will be placed in sumps, normally located in the lower most
corner of the excavation area and shall be operated to dewater the collected water from
the excavation pit. The water shall be finally discharged in to nearby nallah through ring
header and flexible/non flexible pipe lines.
vii. The pumps shall be fitted with auto trip switches with respect to low water level.
Discharge nozzle of each pump shall be fitted with flexible non-collapsible hose pipe and
other end of hose shall be inserted into the branch connection of ring header pipe.
Suction nozzle of each pump shall be fitted with built-in strainer. The pumps shall be
handled with the help of steel wire rope and lifting arrangement.
viii. Suitable float system will be adopted to mount the pumps for dewatering the collected
water in variable depths. The use of silt pumps will be adopted to dewater the silt up
water wherever required.
ix. Adequate numbers of spare pumps / spares will be made available at site as standby
arrangement to take care of non favorable conditions.
x. The dewatering scheme shall be revised appropriately as the work progresses at different
heights at the time of excavation, by incorporating following:
a. Capturing the details of excavated area and surroundings.
b. Excavated level of various buildings
c. The location of sumps
d. Installation of adequate capacity of pumps
e. Connecting the pump out lets to Ring header.
xi. All the measures shall be taken to prevent entry of Rain water into excavated pit viz.,
making bunds, temporary trenches, sumps, drains etc., and slope protection aspects
including prevention of soil erosion shall be taken care.
xii. The entry of surface water/runoff water to excavation pit from the nearby surroundings is
prevented as 1st step by taking following measures.
a. Natural streams passing through plant layout is identified
b. These streams are diverted outside the main plant excavated pit by making suitable
drains by cutting and providing suitable gradient.
c. The water from these drains is made to flow finally to Kali River.
The sketch showing the above details is enclosed.
xiii. All the safety requirements as indicated in the procedure for Excavation in soil and Soft
rock (Kaiga – 5&6/ Bekem-Avantika-Siri (JV)/Civil/01 R1) shall be followed during
Dewatering also and mitigation action for the hazards listed shall be followed at site. R1
12.REQUIREMENT OF PUMPS:
The capacity of pumps required for dewatering the area 2 (Grid 8-30 & v-y2) based on the
data provided is as below: As per the IS- 9759clause 10.3.
Calculation:
Data Considered:
Maximum rainfall, i= 552 mm/day(Maximum daily rainfall (1987-2021) at Kaiga Site)
(Surface run-off)Q= 0.278 CiA
C = Run-off coefficient (0-1) 1 is considered for impervious strata
i=Critical rainfall intensity= 182mm/hr (Conversion factor 0.33)
A - 0.036 sq.km (120 x 300 m-for Area2(grid v-y2 & 8-30)
q –1.82 Cu.m/sec
qn- 2.73 (Discharge increased to 50% to account for seepage etc..)
Pump Capacity:
Total Pump Capacity required in Horse Power(HP) =hqg/(3960*Pe)
h - 52.5 feet (16 dynamic Head)
q– 2.73Cu.m/sec
1 gallon = 4.5lts
R1
= 0.0045cu.m.
1gpm =0. 000075cu.m/sec
=1cu.m/sec = 13333.3333gpm
=2.73Cu.m/sec = 36461 gpm
g- 1
Pump efficiency (Pe)-0.75
Total Pump Capacity in Horse power= (52.5x 36661x1)
(3960x0.75)
= 645 HP
Considering 30% as standby = 1.3*645 =837 HP say 850 HP
From the above it is seen that at the peak conditions, the requirement of Total pump capacity
is 850 HP including standby will be required to cater the dewatering requirement of Area 2.
Various types and capacities of pumps will be deployed as per site conditions.
The above requirement considering Peak rainfall (552 mm) is about 200% more than
the average annual maximum daily rainfall of 190 mm.
The work shall be executed and monitored as per the approved Quality assurance plan
identified the activities involved. Approved Quality assurance plan is enclosed as
Annexure-1.
