What I Need to Know

The module presents the following:

Content standard
 The learner demonstrates understanding of the four fundamental
operations involving fractions and decimals.
Performance standard
 The learner is able to apply. the four fundamental operations
involving fractions and decimals in Mathematical problems and real-
life situations.
Most essential learning competency
 The learner multiplies simple fractions and mixed fractions.
Competency Code: M6NS-1b-90.2

What I Know

Add the following fractions. Reduce your answer to lowest term.

1. + = 4. +5 =

2. + = 5. + =

3. 3 +2 =

1
Subtract the following fractions. Reduce your answer to lowest term.

1. - = 4. - =

2. 5 -2 = 5. 9 -3 =

3. 4 -2 =

What’s In

To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and then multiply the

denominators. Use the greatest common factor to reduce the product to
the simplest or lowest term.
9 5𝑥9 45
Example: x = =
0 x 0 0

45 45 ÷15 3
= 60 ÷15 =
0

Cancellation method may also be used as a short-cut to the

multiplication process if there is a common factor between the
numerators and denominators.
5 9
x 5 and 10 have a common factor, that is, 5
0

1 9
hence, x 9 and 6 have common factor, that is, 3
6

1 3 3
thus, x =
2

2
Multiply these

1. x = 4. x =

2. x = 5. x =

3. x =

What’s New

Aling Nelia bought 5 kg of sugar. She used of it to make
2 3
leche flan. How many kilograms of sugar did she use for this dessert?

What is the product of 5 and ?

Hint: Since 5 is a mixed fraction, there is a need to change this to

improper fraction. Proceed with multiplication.

3
What is It

Let’s do this: x =?

Step 1: Convert mixed to improper fraction.

5 =

5 x 2 = 10 + 1 =

Step 2: Multiply both numerators and then, the denominators.

x
x = x
=

Step 3: Convert improper fraction to mixed form

How:
6
- 18 Divide the numerator and
4 denominator. The quotient
hence, the mixed form is will serve as the whole
number and the remainder
2 will be the numerator
3 or 3

Here are some examples:

1. 4 = ? 2. 5 x3 =?

4 3 2 14 x
4 = = 5 = =

14 x
x = = 3 = =
3 4

4 5 20
= 35 ÷ 12 = 2 x =1x1= = 20

4
What More

Find the product. Write answer in simplest form.

1. 3 x = 2. 5 x =

1
3. x2 = 4. x =

5. 1 x 4 =

What I Have Learned

In multiplying simple fractions:

1. Multiply the numerator by the numerator and the denominator
by the denominator.
2. Express the product in simplest form.
In multiplying mixed fractions:
1. Change the mixed fractions to improper fractions.
2. Do the cancellation method by using the GCF of any pair of the
numerator (s) and denominator(s).
3 Multiply the numerator by the numerator and the denominator
by the denominator.
4. Express the product in simplest form.

5
What I Can Do

Read and solve the following problems. Write the answers on your
answer sheet.

1. Mr. Aying grows vegetable garden on of his piece of land.

Two- sixths of this is for eggplant garden. What fraction of his

piece of land is used for eggplants?

2. Joshua spent of his allowance. ou -s xt s of the amount was

spent for his snacks. What fraction of his money did he spend
for his snacks?

Assessment

Find the product of the following fractions and mixed fractions:

Express your answer in the simplest form.

1. 2 x = 2. 5 x =

3. x1 = 4. 1 x =

5. x1 =

6
Additional Activities

Find the product. Write the answer in simplest form.

1. x = 6. x =

2. 4 x = 7. x =

3. 3 x = 8. x =

4. 2 x 5 = 9. 1 x =

5. 3 x 5 = 10. x =
