In Excel, a formula is an expression that


operates on values in a range of cells or
a cell.
For example,
=A1+A2+A3, which finds the sum of the range of
values from cell A1 to cell A3.

Functions are predefined formulas in Excel.


They eliminate laborious manual entry of
formulas while giving them human-friendly
names.
For example,
=SUM(A1:A3).
The function sums all the values from A1 to A3.

Count and CountA
COUNT function is generally used to count

a range of cells containing numbers or date


excluding blanks and texts.
THE COUNT FUNCTION
Count and CountA
COUNTA will count everything-- numbers,

dates text, or a range containing a mixture

of these items, but will not count the blank

cells.
ACTIVITY 2
Use COUNTA function
1. Open the file Eli's Palamig Sales Inventory.xlsx
2. In cell B23, count the total menu item in Column A.
Type =COUNTA(A4:A18) and then press Enter.
Question: How many menu items are there? __________
3. Save your work and close the file.
THE COUNT FUNCTION
COUNTIF is a function used to count cells that meet

a single criterion.
COUNTIF can be used to count cells with dates,

numbers, or text that match a specific criteria.


The syntax for this function is =COUNTIF(range,

criteria)
THE COUNT FUNCTION
For example:
=COUNTIF(A1:A6, "RED")
This syntax means that from the cell range

A1:A6, count only if the cell content is RED.

ACTIVITY 3
Use COUNTIF function
1. Open the file Eli's Palamig Sales Inventory.xlsx
2. Count how many items met or exceed the target quantity.
3. In cell C19, type =COUNTIF(C4:C18, "YES").
4. In cell E20, repeat step 2 for Jan 2 (Tue) quantity.
5. In cell C20, count how many items did not meet the target

quantity.
AVERAGE
The function is used to calculate the arithmetic mean of a
given set of arguments in Excel.
For example, if the range A1:A20 contains numbers, the
formula =AVERAGE(A1:A20) returns the average of those
numbers.
ACTIVITY 4
Use AVERAGE function
1. Open the file Eli's Palamig Sales Inventory.xlsx
2. In cell D20, get the average of the values under

Quantity for Monday by typing

=AVERAGE(D4:D18)
3. Do the same thing for Tuesday to Sunday
