If you want to try an unusual holiday, then why not go on
a writing course to the Greek island of Skyros like I did?
While there, you get to stay in a local’s house with other
course participants. I shared with a Canadian film editor
and a social worker in a large very Greek room. The carved,
wooden ceiling and white walls hung with copper pans
was quite dramatic. It wasn’t the kind of room you’d expect
when on a typical Greek holiday, but it helped to remind
me that we were staying on the island where Achilles once
lived and it made me feel as though I belonged. I’m sure
it’d do that for you, too. It’s definitely part of the charm!

To really get away from it all, try camping or ‘glamping’ at
The Big Tree Campsite in the Forest of Dean. We have a
choice of luxurious accommodation, including teepees,
yurts and more traditional tents. All are furnished with
comfortable beds and have fully-equipped kitchens, as
well as fire pits nearby so that you can make the most of
the evenings. The beautiful location in the middle of the
forest means that you will be surrounded by nature. In
fact, we do recommend you close your tent up in the day
otherwise insects and other forest inhabitants could find
their way into your bedroom while you’re out.
