This Self Learning Kit is prepared for the students to learn about East Asian
countries specifically China, Japan and Korea. This will introduce to you to the arts
and crafts of China, Japan and Korea such as painting, calligraphy, pottery, paper
kites, knot tying, woodblock printing, ukiyo-e, and paper cutting.
You will learn that these countries focus on nature as their subjects or themes
in their arts and crafts. Learning the arts concepts of China, Japan and Korea will be
helpful for you to enhance your skill and deepen understanding and appreciation
about the arts of East Asia.

Appreciate the artifacts and art objects in terms of their


utilization and their distinct use of art elements and principles.

of East Asia. Today, you are going to know the artifacts and art objects in
terms of their utilization and their distinct use of art elements and
principles.

Subjects are divided into five categories:
1. Landscape painting
2. Minhwa (traditional folk painting)
3. Four gracious plants (plum blossoms, orchids or wild
orchids, chrysanthemums and bamboo)
4. Bamboo
5. Portraits

Chinese Painting
There are three concepts in the production of Chinese Art
1. Earth
2. Heaven
3. Humankind

Six Principles of Chinese Painting – by Xie He


- This is to apply to make your painting interesting and
realistic.
1. Observe rhythm and movements
2. Leave spaces for the eyes to rest.
3. Use brush in calligraphy
4. Use colors correctly.
5. Live up to tradition by copying the master’s artwork.
6. Copy the correct proportion of the objects and nature.

Korean Landscape Painting


Mountains and water are important features in Korean
landscape painting because it is the site for building temples and
buildings.
Paintings in East Asia do not only apply on paper, silk, and
wood. Performers of Kabuki in Japan and Peking Opera in China use
their faces as the canvas for painting
4 while mask painting is done in
Korea.

Meaning of Colors in Face Painting


KABUKI MAKEUP OF JAPAN is also another way of face painting which
has two types: 5
1. Standard makeup – applied to most actors
2. Kumadori makeup – applied to villains and heroes.

 Nature has always been regarded as an element of utmost


importance in East Asian Countries.
 Japanese painting and printmaking depicts scenes from
everyday life that are often crowded with figures and details.
 Ancient Chinese paper folding emphasizes more in the making
of hats and boats unlike in Japan where flowers, animals, birds,
fish, geometric shapes, and dolls are the common models used
in origami.
 The silver golden sycee were imitated through paper folding
called yuanbao, for a traditional funeral, for burning in the
Chines ancestor’s grave, or as a symbol of prosperity on New
Year’s day.
 There are three concepts in the production of Chinese art
(heaven, earth, humankind)
 Knot tying in Korea is called maedeup, in China is zhongguo,
and in Japan it is Hanamusubi.
 Face painting in theatrical performances is used in peking opera
in China and Kabuki in Japan, while mask painting is used in
Korea.
