AID?
First aid is the emergency care
given to an ill or injured
individual.
Why is First Aid
Important?
Having the primary
knowledge of First Aid is
helpful for both you as a
person and the society. It
assists you to sustain
individuals who eventually
become wounded in the
occurrence of an accident
or any tragic situation until
the necessary help come in.
Goals Of First Aid
Reduce the amount of suffering - One of the main goals is to be able to
1. assist in the reduction or elimination of suffering.
To Prevent further injury or danger - also known as preventing the
2. condition from getting worse. or the risk of further harm
Preserve Life - The goal of first aid is to save and maintain life. In
3. addition, the person must be saved from imminent harm.
3 Characteristics A First Aider Should Have:
GENTLE -As much as possible, the first aider should avoid causing or
1. inflicting suffering.
TACTFUL - Handling the victim with extreme care and calm.

RESOURCEFUL - Makes the most of the resources at hand.

Your First Aid Kit Should Have
First Aid Management For Closed Wounds
Closed wounds - are those in which the epidermis is
intact and the tissue beneath it is not exposed.
CAUSES:
Blunt Object results in bruises or contusion
Application of External Forces
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
Pain and tenderness
Swelling
Discoloration
Hematoma ( an injury that causes blood to collect and pool
under the skin)

Rest the affected area
Ice Compress
Compression
Elevate the affected area
Splinting
First Aid Management For Closed Wounds
Status:
Conduct additional evaluations and place the injured
person under monitoring. SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE IF THE
FOLLOWING EVENTS OCCUR:
- The pain is unbearable
- Hematoma is spreading - The head is the affected area
(including face and neck)
- Involves the area of the spine.
- There is bleeding in the mouth, ears, and nose.
- Coughing and vomiting blood
Open Wound
is a type of injury that involves an external or
internal break in body tissue, most commonly
the skin.
Dangers of an Open Wound :
Hemorrhage - severe bleeding.
Infection - introduction of
bacteria/parasites.
Shock - decreased circulatory (blood)
volume. (a fatal condition

For Severe Bleeding
INSPECT
Inspect for foreign objects
lodged in the wound area. It
can be removed manually by
hand or using a pick up forceps
Flushing with normal saline
solution or just clean water is
also applicable.

CONTROL BLEEDING
Done by applying a sterile absorbent
gauze pad over the bleeding site while
applying firm pressure. Dressing can be
secured with a bandage and splints.
REFER TO A PHYSICIAN
It is essential in severe
bleeding wounds. Further
medical/surgical
management may be

needed like suturing or
administration of
medications that control
bleeding.

CLEAN
Clean with mild soap and water
DISINFECT
Apply Antiseptics
DRESS
Apply sterilized gauze pad with dressing.
Secure with surgical tapes
