DIRECTIONS
■ Add the garlic to a bowl with a pinch of sea salt. Add the pine
nuts to a food processor and pulse once or twice, just enough to
break them up but not too finely. Add to the bowl with the garlic.
■ Finely chop the watercress leaves and stir into the garlic and pine
nuts along with 2 tbsp olive oil. Grate in half of the Parmesan then
mix and season to taste. Add the cherry tomatoes to the pesto,
crushing with a spoon to release the tomato juices, and mix.
■ Boil the green beans for 4 minutes, then remove from the pan,
leaving the water on the heat. Add the gnocchi to the boiling
water and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until they float to the surface.
Meanwhile, chop the green beans into 3cm lengths and add to the
pesto and tomatoes.
■ Drain the gnocchi, reserving about 250ml of the cooking water
in a separate jug. Tip the pesto mix and gnocchi into the warm pan
and place over a low heat, until everything is heated through.

‘Invest in your home with new windows,
which have a whole range of benefits and
shouldn’t require planning permission,
though exceptions do apply so it’s always
best to check with your local authority.
On average, new double- or triple-glazed
windows can lift the property value by 10 per
cent, making it significantly more attractive
for home buyers as they wouldn’t have to
go through additional renovation costs and
this should offset the window purchase cost.
If this is your forever home, upgrading your
windows can reduce your energy bills with
the improved insulation, as well as reducing
noise in busy built-up areas. A new set of
quality windows can bring better ventilation

3 INSTALL A ROOFLIGHT
Look upwards when considering how to create a sense of more
space and add value to your home. While an entire loft conversion
might be out of budget, installing a rooflight could boost the
financial value and usefulness of your loft or illuminate an existing
bedroom in the eaves. ‘A rooflight requires minimal structural
work and is usually within permitted development. As they directly
face the sky, you get the added benefit of no onlookers through
your windows, so more privacy, too. If building into your loft,
bear in mind that you still need a place to store your suitcases and
Christmas decorations when not in use, so consider converting the
eaves into cupboards for storage space,’ suggests Peter Daniel,

you need. If you live alone, but use a

you get the right-sized appliance for your household. Even

electric sander and the table is solid wood, it’s
worth sanding off the top to freshen up the
grain and remove any scratches.
I favour natural wood on the tops of tables
with significant daily use – a painted tabletop will
wear more quickly than a wood finish. Painted
bases with wood grain tops make a lovely
contrast and allow you to keep the wood texture
and warmth, while introducing some colour.
Prep and paint your base using a robust

Holly Jones, garden
design specialist
with Garden Street,
says… A quick and easy
way to create a living wall
is by using pocket planters
as these can be fitted to a
wall and seeds can simply be
planted in the individual pots. Another way to
make a living wall is by putting up trellis panels
and planting climbing plants, which in time will
grow up. Spring is the ideal time to start planting
for the vertical garden as plants establish much
quicker and fill the space faster. Choose plants
and grasses that flower all year round, so it is still
functional during the winter months. You can
water the living wall by using an irrigation system.
Alternatively, use a garden hose or watering can
with care. Start by watering from the top of the
wall so the water flows down all the plants.
