• Formal Organization has a role of setting up a formal oral and written language. In this role a
society will be able to differ when to use formal language and informal one. We can see it in
Formal Speech like President speech, Regional Meetings, News Anchor, teaching process in
university.
• Institution in the millennium era we can see how language develops through social media. Since
the birth of MTV in the 90’s we can see how fast English develops in non-English speaker countries.
Not only that some institution might add new vocabularies into the society. Before MTV era we
neve heard a term like VJ (short of Video Jockey which pointed to the host of the program). Now
in the era of social media, there is phenomenon of bursting new vocabularies like IoT (Internet of
Things), AI (Artificial Intelligence), IG Stories (Instagram Stories), even the word following has
broaden its meaning; some time ago following means go or come after a person – now following
also means chooses to add content from a person. In short institution has big contribution in
language development, the language once society enriched from the terms that one institution
has.
• Society as a group of individuals speak in the same language. From time to time a society will
transmit the culture which include the language to generations after generations. For example,
native language of a society is restored in the individuals of the society and will be transmitted to
the next generation as they use the same language from time to time.
“Language not only helps people to interpret the world but it is also an important part of
the cultural identity of a people”.
Language as a tool of communication allows us to understand situations around us through oral and
written language. In this manner as long as we speak and understand the language, we will be able to
understand the world and its meaning. Not only we will be able to understand, but language can also
distinguish one people from another. Language is interlinked with the culture of one’s society. Through
their language we can identify where someone is from and what kind of culture they practice in their
origin.
5. The misconception regarding Standard English and Non-Standard English in The View Points of
Linguistics are;
• Standard English is just a variety or dialect of English. It cannot even legitimately be considered
better than the other varieties.
In my opinion, the way we differ SE with other dialects mostly in the terms of formal and
informality. Nowadays, even some people from high social status like president, governor,
senators, scholars use the non-standard English in their daily conversation depends on the topics.
This phenomenon show that SE is formal dialect for formal set up. Such as in an English class the
teacher will use SE to teach his/her non-English speaker students with the purpose to make them
aware of the international standard for English.
• All languages and all dialects are equally “good” as linguistic system.
As language as a tool of communication in society, linguistic point of view believes that there is
no such thing as more superior language than another. All language serves every individual to
understand each other in terms of communication in their society.
• All varieties of a language are structured, complex, rule-governed systems which can
adequately meet the needs of their speaker for communication.
Every language has its own structure and complexity. These characteristics however serves the
needs of their speaker to understand each other better. Its unique codes let the society
understands the situation around them in terms of communication.
• It follows that value judgement of languages are social rather than linguistic. Attitudes toward
non-standard varieties are attitudes which reflect the social structure of the society.
One individual preference of a dialect is more into where he/she is raised. In England the royals
and the commoner speak different dialect. From this example we can see that the use of dialect
is more into social structure of the society.
