 Ball – the most important


thing for training is the
ball. For practicing, one
can play with a rubber
ball. For professional
competitions,
one needs to use an
inflated ball made of
leather.
- official size of a basketball is 29.5 to 30 inches in circumference for men’s
game and 28.5 inches in circumference for women’s game.
- It should weigh 18 to 22 ounces.
- When bounced off 6 feet from the floor, a well inflated ball should bounce 49
to 54 inches in height.

 Hoop or basket – is a horizontal metallic rim, circular in shape. This rim is
attached to a net and helps one score a point.
- The rim is mounted about 4 feet inside the baseline and 10 feet
above the court.
- The hoop mounted on the backboard is the target point of the ball.
- following the rules set by FIBA, the basketball circle was decided to
be orange.
 Basket net
o The loop net is a material that makes basketball sports safer. The loop
net is very important for the safety of basketball.

 Basketball court
o The court is a flat, hard surface free from obstructions.
o The court size is about 28m x 17m according to the International
standards.
o The National Basketball Association (NBA) regulation states the floor
dimension as 29m x 15m.
o The standard court is rectangular in shape and has baskets placed on
opposite ends.

Lines
o All lines are white, 5 cm wide and clearly visible

Boundary line
o Boundary lines consist of end lines and side lines and are not part of the
playing court.
o Any obstructions including seated personnel is at least 2m from the
playing court.

Center line, circle line and free throw semi-circles


o The center line is marked parallel to the end lines from the midpoint of the
side lines.
o The centre circle is marked in the centre of the playing court and has a
radius of 1.80m measured to the outer edge of the circumference. 
o The free throw semi-circles are marked on the playing court with a radius
of 1.80m measured to the outer edge of the circumference and with their
centres at the midpoint of the free throw lines.

Free throw lines, restricted areas and free throw rebound places
o The free throw line is drawn parallel to each end line. Its furthest edge is
5.8m from the inner edge of the end line and is 3.6m long.
o An arc of radius 6.75m measured from the point on the floor beneath the
exact centre of the opponents’ basket to the outer edge of the arc.
o The distance of the point on the floor from the inner edge of the midpoint
of the end line is 1.575m.

No-charge semi-circle areas


o The no-charge semi-circle lines shall be marked on the playing courts, limited by:
o A semi-circle with a radius of 1.25m measured from the point on the floor
beneath the exact centre of the basket to the inner edge of the semi-circle.
o Two parallel lines perpendicular to the end lines, the inner edge 1.25m from the
point on the floor beneath the exact centre of the basket, 0.375m in length and
ending 1.20m from the inner edge of the end line .

 Backboard
o  is the rectangular board that is placed behind the rim. It helps give better
rebound to the ball.
o The backboard is about 1800mm in size horizontally and 1050mm
vertically.
o Many times, backboards are made of acrylic, aluminum, steel or glass.
 Shoes
o One needs specialized shoes when playing basketball. It should be able to
give better support to the ankle as compared to running shoes.
o The basketball shoes should be high-tipped shoes and provide extra
comfort during a game. These shoes are specially designed to maintain
high traction on the basketball court.

 Uniforms
o One of the most important requirements for a team is to have a uniform.
This helps one differentiate teams from one another.
o A uniform consists of a jersey (shirt), shorts, numbers on the front and
back of the shirts for identification.
 Tactical board
o It is a board used to give tactics to the players used by basketball coaches
during the game and is drawn on.
o There is a picture of the basketball court on the board, so coaches can
easily guide their players.
