Exclamation Mark-Exclamatory Sentence


We use sentences in our language to help send a message.
Breaking our ideas into sentences is essential for clear
communication. That being said, there must be different
kinds of sentences for different kinds of messages. In fact,
there are four types of sentences, each with a different
purpose. Let's look at each one and discuss how to identify
the type of sentence.
Why is this an important concept?

Students express themselves more clearly in writing when they learn


how to identify and write the four basic types of sentences. They are
also able to place the appropriate punctuation at the end of a
sentence, making the ideas they are expressing in their writing better
understood by the reader.
That being said, there must be different kinds of sentences
for different kinds of messages. In fact, there are four types
of sentences, each with a different purpose. Let's look at
each one and discuss how to identify the type of sentence.

● Declarative
● Interrogative,
● Imperative
● Exclamatory

There are four types of sentence…

Declarative Sentences
A Declarative sentences tell something or make a statement. They use a
period at the end of each sentence.This sentence that simply tells the
reader something.

The dog was growling.


Declarative Sentences
1. Declarative Sentence (statement)
Declarative sentences make a statement. They tell us something. They
give us information, and they normally end with a full-stop/period.

The usual word order for the declarative sentence is:

subject + verb...
Declarative sentences can be positive or negative. Look at these
examples:

positive negative

I like coffee. I do not like coffee.

We watched TV last night. We did not watch TV last night

Declarative sentences are the most common type of sentence.


Interrogative Sentences

This type of sentence asks a question. Use a question mark ? at the end
of a sentence to show that you are asking a question.

Why is your room so messy?

2. Interrogative Sentence (question)


Interrogative sentences ask a question. They ask us something. They
want information, and they always end with a question mark.

The usual word order for the interrogative sentence is:

(wh-word +) auxiliary + subject + verb...


Interrogative sentences can be positive or negative. Look at these
examples:

Do you like coffee? Don't you like coffee?

Why did you go? Why didn't you go?


Imperative Sentences

Imperative sentences make a command or tell someone to do something.


They also end with a period.A command is when you are telling someone
to do something. Commands usually start with a verb.

Go and brush your teeth.


Imperative Sentences(Command)

Imperative sentences give a command. They tell us to do something, and


they end with a full-stop/period (.) The usual word order for the imperative
sentence is:

base verb...
Note that there is usually no subject—because the subject is understood,
it is YOU.

Imperative sentences can be positive or negative. Look at these


examples:

Give her coffee. Don't give her coffee.


Exclamatory Sentences

An exclamation is a sentence beginning with ‘what’ or ‘how’. It is a full


sentence, including a verb, which ends with an exclamation mark.

How exciting, I love going to the zoo!


Exclamatory Sentences

Exclamative sentences express strong emotion/surprise—an


exclamation—and they always end with an exclamation mark/point (!).

The usual word order for the exclamative sentence is:

What (+ adjective) + noun + subject + verb


How (+ adjective/adverb) + subject + verb
