INTRODUCTION TO SMART GRIDS AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES
Introduction, Early Smart Grid initiatives, Overview of the technologies required for the
Smart Grid.
Introduction to data communication, Dedicated and shared communication channels,
Switching techniques, Communication channels, layered architecture and protocols,
Communication technologies for the Smart Grid, Standards for information exchange.
Learning Outcome: The student will be able to
1. Analyze technologies required for the Smart Grid (L4)
2. Understand data communication (L2)
3. Understand Standards for information exchange (L2)

UNIT-II 10 Lectures
INFORMATION SECURITY
Introduction to information security for the Smart Grid, Encryption and decryption,
Authentication, Digital signatures, Cyber security standards.

1. Understand information security for the Smart Grid (L2)
2. Analyze Encryption and decryption (L4)
3. Understand Cyber security standards (L2)

UNIT-III 10 Lectures
SENSING, MEASUREMENT, CONTROL
Introduction to smart metering and demand-side integration, smart metering, Smart meters:
An overview of the hardware used, Communication infrastructure and protocols for smart
metering, Demand-side integration.
AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGIES
Introduction to distribution automation equipment, Substation automation equipment, Faults
in the distribution system, Voltage regulation.
Learning Outcome: The student will be able to
1. Understand smart metering and demand-side integration (L2)
2. Analyze Faults in the distribution system (L4)
3. Analyze voltage regulation (L4)
UNIT-IV 10 Lectures
DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
Data sources and associated external systems, Modeling and analysis tools, Applications
TRANSMISSION SYSTEM OPERATION
Data sources, Energy management systems, Wide area applications, Visualization techniques.
Learning Outcome: The student will be able to
1. Analyze modeling of distribution management system (L4)
2. Understand Energy Management System and Wide area applications (L2)
3. Understand Visualization techniques (L2)

UNIT-V 10 Lectures
POWER ELECTRONICS AND ENERGY STORAGE
Power electronics in the Smart Grid, Renewable energy generation, Fault current limiting,
FACTS, HVDC, Energy storage technologies.

1. Apply Power electronics in the Smart Grid (L3)
2. Understand Renewable energy generation (L2)
3. Understand FACTS, HVDC, Energy storage technologies (L2)
