1 Safety Information
Statement
                 ● Be cautious to avoid injury when moving heavy objects.
                 ● When moving a heavy object outwards, be aware of unfixed or heavy objects
on the cabinet to prevent injury.
                 ● Do not change the structure or installation sequence of ESMs without
                        permission.
                 ● Ground the ESM before powering it on. Otherwise, personal injury or
                        equipment damage may occur.
                 ● Before powering on the ESM, ensure that the ESM is secured by screws to
prevent it from falling off during operation.
                 ● During transportation, turnover, installation, cable connection, and
maintenance, comply with the national and local laws, regulations, and
                        relevant standards.
                 ● Before installation or maintenance, wear goggles, rubber gloves, and
protective clothing to avoid damage caused by electrolyte in the case of
                        electrolyte overflow.
                 ● Before installation or maintenance, ensure that there is no irritant or scorched
                        smell around the lithium battery.
                 ● Keep the ESM loop disconnected during installation and maintenance.
                 ● Do not charge or discharge unqualified batteries.
                 ● The materials and tools prepared by the customer must comply with the
national and local laws, regulations, and relevant standards.
                 ● Secure ESM cables to the specified torque. Loose connections will result in
excessive voltage drops or cause ESMs to burn out when the current increases.
                 ● In an indoor scenario, you are advised to power on the ESM within seven days
after unpacking. If the ESM cannot be powered on in time, place it in a dry
                        indoor environment without corrosive gas.
                 ● In an outdoor scenario, you are advised to power on the ESM within 24 hours
after unpacking. If the ESM cannot be powered on in time, place it in a dry
                        indoor environment without corrosive gas.
                 ● Protect your skin and eyes from ESM electrolyte leakage. If you touch the
electrolyte leakage, wash with clean water immediately and visit a doctor if
                        the situation is serious.
Misoperations
Avoid the following(including but not limited to) misoperations.
Reverse connection Before an ESM is activated: The ESM power cables must be correctly
connected. If the ESM power cables are reversely connected, the ESM stays
in sleep mode and will not start. If you forcibly activate the ESM (through
the MANUAL ON/OFF button or power port), a protection alarm will be
reported and the ALM indicator will turn on.
After an ESM is activated: If the ESM power cables are reversely connected,
                          the ESM may be damaged.
External short circuit If the ESM loop is short-circuited, ESM protection will be triggered and the
ESM cannot be charged or discharged. Long-time frequent short circuit can
result in cell or board faults, which may cause risks such as fire.
Serial connection ESMs cannot be connected in series. If ESMs are connected in series
forcibly, ESM protection will be triggered. Operating outside the protection
range will result in board or battery damage and battery protection failure,
which may cause risks such as fire.
Gas Composition
The ESM is an enclosed battery system and will not release any gases under
                  normal operations.
If the ESM is severely misused, for example, being burned or used under
thunderstruck, it may be damaged, resulting in electrolyte leakage. The electrolyte
of organic carbonate nature may produce CO2, CO, and N2 after being burned.

                 ● Parallel connection for power expansion: The maximum power (P) of N ESMs
connected in parallel can reach 24 kW. For details, see 3.2 Parallel
                        Connection.
                 ● Application in class B environments with direct ventilation: The ESM can be
used in indoor environments where the ambient temperature and humidity
are not controlled or outdoor environments (with simple shielding measures
such as awnings) where the humidity can reach 100%.
                 ● Support for third-party power systems: The ESM implements lithium battery
self-management so that it can be used with third-party power systems.
                 ● Mixed use: In a Huawei power system, lead-acid batteries can be directly
                        connected in parallel.
                 ● Maintenance-free: This feature reduces battery O&M costs and the frequency
                        of site visits.
                 ● Long service life: The service life of a lithium-ion battery is two or three times

Category Requirement
Activation through the power port Supply a DC voltage of 43.2–58 V to the power
port on the front panel for at least 5s.
MANUAL ON/OFF activation Hold down the MANUAL ON/OFF button for at
least 5s and less than 15s.
 Notes:
 1. The MANUAL ON/OFF button is a contact button. The interval for pressing the button should
be greater than 0.5s; otherwise, the operation is ineffective.
 2. If you power off the ESM that is in charging, discharging, or disconnected mode by holding
down the MANUAL ON/OFF button, you need to hold down this button again to reactivate the
    ESM.
 3. If the intelligent displacement lock function is enabled for the ESM, the shutdown and
maintenance functions of the MANUAL ON/OFF button will become ineffective. To use this
button, you need to disable the intelligent displacement lock/GPS function. The default
undervoltage protection threshold of the ESM is 46 V.
NOTE
                        ● Sleep mode: The BMS is in sleep mode before it is activated. The BMS can enter the
offline mode only after it is activated. If the BMS enters the sleep mode after you press
the MANUAL ON/OFF button, the DSP keeps working as long as the power port or PWR
                          port receives effective input voltage.
                        ● Offline mode: The ESM is disconnected from the battery busbar and does not supply
power. The BMS enters the offline mode when it is reactivated, the ESM voltage is low,
fault protection occurs, or a shutdown command is received. When the fault is rectified,
or the BMS receives a startup command (after receiving a shutdown command), or the
BMS enters the charge mode (after the BMS enters the offline mode due to low battery
voltage), the ESM switches to another mode based on its status or system status.
(When the lithium battery enters the low-temperature pulse heating mode, the offline
                          status is reported.)
                        ● Charge mode: The ESM is charging. When certain conditions are met, the mode is
                          switched to another mode.
                        ● Discharge mode: The ESM discharges. When certain conditions are met, the mode is
                          switched to another mode.
                        ● Maintenance mode: Switch to this mode when you need to replace an ESM. Under this
mode, the ESM does not charge or discharge, and the indicators blink fast.

                                                                    exceed the warranty period.
NOTE
                        1. If ESMs have been stored overdue, promptly report the event to the department leader.
                        2. Dispose of bulging ESMs irrespective of how long they have been stored.
                        3. The storage duration (t) starts from the latest charge time marked on the ESM packing
case. The latest charge time is updated after every charge.
                        4. If an ESM is qualified after charge, mark the latest charge time and the next recharge
time on the ESM packing case. The next recharge time is 8 months (stored above 30°C)
or 12 months (stored below 30°C) later than the latest charge time. The total storage
duration should not exceed the warranty period.
an ESM with low SOC is unavoidable, limit the storage duration to 30 days at 25°C
or 15 days at 45°C. Promptly recharge the ESM after the storage. Otherwise, the
ESM may be damaged and scrapped due to overdischarge.
                  1. After the site power supply is disconnected due to a mains outage, the power
supply is not recovered for a long time because the faults (such as cable
faults) cannot be rectified in a timely manner.
                  2. After installation and commissioning are complete, the mains power is
switched off directly without powering off the ESM. The ESM enters the low
power mode only after being completely discharged, and the interval for
                        onsite acceptance check is long.
                  3. Other reasons that prevent the ESM from entering the low power mode
                        normally.

CAUTION
Prerequisites
It is recommended that ESMs are from the same manufacturer, of the same
model, and in the same batch.
Comply with regulations and warnings issued by the ESM manufacturer.
Before installing ESMs, ensure that the battery circuit breakers in the power
system are OFF or that the battery fuses are removed.
DANGER
NOTICE
Check whether the package is damaged before installation. If yes, inform the
                 carrier and manufacturer immediately.
Before installation, unpack and check the equipment according to the packing list.
NOTICE
                 ● The ESM-48100B1 weighs about 44 kg. Check the load-bearing capacity of the
                   rack tray before installation.
                 ● The depth of an ESM-48100B1 is 396 mm. Check the rack depth before
                   installation.
                 ● The ESM can be installed in a 19-inch rack with guide rails and a tray. Check
whether the load bearing capacity of the guide rails and tray meets the
requirements. This section uses guide rails as an example.
                 ● It is recommended that ESM be installed from the bottom to the top. If a third-
party cabinet is deployed, reserve 4 U space for each battery, It is not supported
to stack ESMs or makean ESM land on its back panel. If a Huawei cabinet is
deployed, refer to the installation guide of the cabinet to install batteries.

         Step 1 Wear protective gloves.
Step 2 Install the ESM ground cable.
After the ESM communications cables are installed, connect a build-out resistor to the
COM_OUT port of the last ESM.
CAUTION
Activation cables are required for Huawei power systems (except the 57 V power
system). Perform the following steps to install the activation cables.
                 1. Locate the ESM activation cables and cable terminals in the fitting bag.
                 2. Install the activation cables at the terminals.
                 3. Connect one end of the activation cables to the PWR ports of the ESMs.
                 4. Connect the other end of the activation cables to a load route (BLVD route is
recommended, and the recommended circuit breaker capacity to which the
activation cables are connected ranges from 6 A to 32 A) and the
corresponding RTN+ busbar in the power system.
Step 6 Install negative and positive power cables for the ESMs.
CAUTION
                 ● When installing an ESM power cable, ensure that the protruding part of the OT
terminal on the cable faces outwards.
                 ● Do not connect two or more cables to the positive or negative power port of
                   the ESMs in parallel.

NOTICE
NOTICE
If the Huawei power monitoring module is connected to the ESM for the first
time, the monitoring module will restart automatically because battery
management parameters need to be switched to the ESM.
Step 2 When multiple ESMs connected in parallel are powered on, observe the RUN
indicator on each ESM panel. Communication is normal if the indicator is steady
on and is not established if it blinks fast. Check the communications cables
between ESMs and rectify the fault.
Step 3 When the ESMs are communicating with the monitoring module, check whether
the communication is normal. If the RUN indicator on an ESM is steady on, the
ESM communicates properly with the monitoring module. If the indicator blinks
fast, the communication is interrupted. In this case, check that the
                communications cable is properly connected.
Step 4 Observe the ESM for 15 minutes. Ensure that it is working properly (the ALM
indicator is off and the RUN indicator is steady on).

A Warranty Rules
                 ● The Company shall not be liable for any damage to ESMs due to force
majeure (such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, mudslides, lightning strikes,
                        fires, and wars).
                 ● The Company shall not be liable for any damage to ESMs caused by the
                        following reasons:
                        – The operating temperature requirements are not met, the power grid
condition is poor, power outages frequently occur, the site capacity is
expanded, or lithium batteries cannot be fully charged for a long time.
                        – The lithium battery is damaged, broken, or leaks due to improper
                            operations or incorrect connection.
                        – The customer does not recharge the batteries in time and the batteries
are stored longer than the storage term, which causes capacity loss or
                            irreversible damage to the batteries.
                        – After the batteries are installed and connected to the system, the
customer does not power on the batteries in time, which causes the
batteries to be overdischarged and thus causes damage to the batteries.
                        – Damage is caused to batteries because they are not accepted in time due
                            to customer reasons.
                        – Damage is caused to batteries because the battery operating
environment or external power parameters do not meet environment
requirements. Examples include operating temperature beyond the
specified range, frequent power grid failures, frequent overdischarge due
to improper maintenance, and long-time low battery capacity due to
                            capacity expansion.
                        – The customer changes the ESM use scenarios without notifying the
                            Company.
                        – Damage is caused by customers or third parties to batteries, for example,
customers replace or reinstall the ESMs without notifying the Company.
                        – The customer does not correctly set ESM operating parameters including
but not limited to ESM capacity, number of ESMs, equalized charge
voltage, float charge voltage, charge current limit, and disconnection
                            voltage.
                        – The customer does not maintain ESMs based on the operation guide for
the required devices onsite. For example, the customer does not
periodically check whether battery terminal screws are tightened.
                        – The customer connects extra loads to ESMs.
                        – The customer uses ESMs with other lithium batteries, causing
acceleration of capacity decrease. For example, the customer uses ESMs
together with lithium batteries of other vendors, with lithium batteries of
different rated capacity, or old and new batteries are mixed.
                        – ESMs are stolen.
                        – ESMs whose warranty period expires.
