Chapter I

Introduction

The changes demanded by technology are reshaping people’s expectations of

education. These changing demands and expectations have introduced certain

concepts, such as individuals who have become skilled at learning and the learning

organization. Individuals and schools, as the most basic unit of educational

organizations, should demonstrate a shift from traditional training toward becoming

‘learning’ or ‘effective’ schools in order to survive in the world today.

An American philosopher, psychologist, and education reformist, John Dewey,

state in the early 1900s, “If we teach today as we taught yesterday we rob our

children of tomorrow” (Dewey, 1916, p. 167). Studies have indicated that an up-to-

date method of teaching, computer-aided instruction (CAI), can be a valuable

supplementary aid used to improve student achievement. “The need for

improvement of student achievement has been the focus of many plans in education

for many years” (Patterson, 2005, p. 4). “Teachers are challenged daily by students

who don’t seem interested in learning” (Muir,2000, p. 1). The need to improve all

student achievement warranted the necessity to research and thus develop a

possible method of improving student achievement through improving student

motivation. “The more the student is motivated to learn, the more involvement there

will be in the learning process” (“The

Underachieving Student,” 2002,para. 1). Motivating students through the use of

computer technology is one strategy often utilized in education.

Department of Education is committed to improve the quality of education by

integrating ICT in the classroom teaching. With the mandate of the Department of

Education under DO 78, s. 2010 Guidelines on The Implementation of The DEPED

Computerization Program (DCP). With the legal mandate of promoting the right of

all citizens to take appropriate steps in making education accessible to all, the

Department of Education (DepEd) is geared towards the transformation of education

through the DepEd Computerization Program (DCP). It aims to provide public

schools with appropriate technologies that would enhance the teaching-learning

process and meet the challenges of the 21 st century. This program shall respond to

the computer backlog of public schools by providing them hardware and software,

and training on simple trouble shooting.

Recently this May 13, 2022, Department of Education (DepEd) reiterated its

commitment to addressing the challenges in digital learning and education

technology through its Digital Rise Program. “We have come a long way, and we

have learned a lot from the pandemic, but the greatest takeaway from this past

year is that we have to be willing, flexible, and embrace technology,” Education

Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said. The Digital Rise Program is an

iii

educational framework that anchors the infrastructure, software, and capacity

building of learners and teachers in technology. It has three major components.

First of these components is the Digital Literacy, where the K to 12

curriculums is updated to include productivity tools like Word processing,

spreadsheets, and presentations for Grade 4 to Grade 6. Grade 7 learners will

have basic programming skills subject while Grades 8 to 10 will have multimedia

concepts as a subject focusing on video editing and graphics design. Lastly,

vocational skills like computer servicing, technical drafting, and broadband

installation are assigned to Senior High School students. Through its second

component, the ICT Assisted Teaching, DepEd aims to provide teachers with

equipment, software content, and skills for their daily classroom teaching. The

program also envisions providing laptops, smart TVs, and lapel speakers to each

teacher and classroom.

Here in Butuan City, not all public primary and secondary schools are privileged

to embraced the digitization in the classrooms. Some public schools in the far-flung

areas where still using the traditional blackboard and printed graphics as an aide to

classroom instructions. While the empowered public schools located near in the City

were already embracing the digitize classroom instruction or shall I say based from

my observations when I visited last 2018, the senior high school classroom in

Agusan National High School, all their classrooms already had a Smart Television,

were teachers can easily use the Smart TV to present their power presentation of

iv

lectures or daily lessons instead of using the projectors. The Smart TV is more

convenient to

use as aide of instruction in the classroom, it saves time compared to projector that

takes time to set up the chords and the white board.

Imagined, most of the public schools near in the City are privilege to have the

technological facilities in their classrooms, some schools are even advanced

embracing that Smart TV in their classrooms. While the unprivileged public school

from rural areas where behind with that technological facilities in education. One of

that school is the Maguinda National High School, where I am assigned as adviser

class of grade 12 students. MNHS has only two projectors, one was used in the

science laboratory room and the other one is use in every meeting or school

events/activities, it has two Smart TV installed in audio visual room and school heads

room, sad to say all the classrooms from grade 7 to grade 12 don’t have a Smart TV

or speakers and all Maguinda NHS teachers don’t have a lapel also.

As a 21st century educator, I aimed for my grade 11 and 12 learners to

experienced that digital presentation of lessons in the classroom with the use of

some relevant software to give them more encouraging and interesting audio-visual

effect in our lessons and activities especially in showing them the elements of plot or

the types of plot of story or drama as one of the lessons in creative writing. Showing

them the videos as example of plots, will give them the realistic experience and

v

sense of sympathy that somehow, they could easily relate to the story compared to

just imagining only while giving them the descriptions and examples in types of plot.

As what we have observed recently, me and my co-educators in Maguinda

NHS, while we are already into limited face-to-face modality, most of the students

were not really updated with their lessons in their modules and some are having a

low self-confidence even they belonged to a high performing student. It is really a

challenge for us, what I did is that I let all my student participate in all the written and

oral activities, I used the constructivist and learners centered approach, to let them

express their own ideas and thoughts related to our lesson through their individual

and collaborative activity. With this challenge, we could imagine that the learners

learning would be more engaging and interesting if we have that technological

facilities as an aide our classroom instructions like the Smart Television and

Speakers that could give or show them the lessons in more realistic image and

sounds. It could give them excitement viewing the lessons in digitize presentations

as what they are engaged in social medias and online software that I integrated

during our modular learning modality. Moreover, this study will give us more

information about the benefits of using Smart TV in the classroom and how it will

help educators throughout their classroom lesson presentations specially in the face-

to-face classes.

Body

A. Smart TV in the classroom and its benefits.

Education is necessary for everybody. Education is very vital, deprived of

education no can lead a good life. Teaching and learning are the important element

in education. The teacher uses different approaches and substantial to teach their

students and their active learning. With the passage of time, altered methods and

techniques are entered in the field of education and teacher use different kind of aids

to make effective learning. Visual aids arouse the interest of learners and help the

teachers to explain the concepts easily. Visual aids are those instructional aids which

are used in the classroom to encourage students learning process. According to

Burton “Visual aids are those sensory objects or images which initiate or stimulate

and support learning”. Kinder, S. James; describe visual aids as “Visual aids are any

devices which can be used to make the learning experience more real, more

accurate and more active”. One of the technological tools than can enhance the

visual aids in the classroom is through the use of Smart Television.

It is the teacher's duty to encourage every student to participate in classroom

discussions. Using Smart TV can provide ease to this task. Like the basic functions

of other televisions, this device can play videos, audio recording, presentations and

image streams. It can directly connect with the internet and sites like YouTube,

Facebook, Twitter, Google and other software can be accessed easily on this

television. It also shows the presentation of interactive games, such as tactical

games, word plays, quizzes, and other brainy games that can be browse in the

internet or from the presentation which save from the USB or connected from the

mobile, laptops, or tablet. This will promote class participation and will make the

whole class active and lively through-out the period. There are many benefits of

using Smart TV in the classroom as shown in many article researches.

Benefits of Smart TVs in Classrooms: (Hedayat,.2017)

Approaches and Flexibilities:

The out-door Videos or photos can be effectively displayed into the classroom

and shared with student devices. If a student or the teacher explores a good

educational video that can explain the lesson more profoundly then the video can be

steamed through these Smart TVs s for the whole class or sometimes the whole

schools to see.

Interactions and Engagements:

viii
SAINT JOSEPH INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Montilla Boulevard Butuan City, Philippines

Previously the teacher has to stand still with the projector to explain the

content but now these flexible devices allow the teacher to roam around and deliver

their lesson to the whole surrounding.

Student Participation and Socialization:

Learning from Smart TVs is a real fun. Those conventional chalk and dusters

have made the student static and bored but now through these Smart TVs the

students can visualize the lesson through images and videos. Students can use

interactive apps to complete their assignment; this will bring innovative projects with

unlimited ideas. The excitement of watching their work on a big screen with their

teachers will certainly develop confident and progressive spirits in the students

working under their smart TVs assistance.

Learning Via Entertainment:

The classroom Smart TV will download games for students like mathematical

games, word searches, and other quizzes. These games will involve the class

actively and lively. Moreover, these TVs have voice control and sensors to add up

excitement and fun learning atmosphere.

Follows Go Green Concept

ix
SAINT JOSEPH INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Montilla Boulevard Butuan City, Philippines

Smart classroom technology follows a dynamic information sharing approach

and there is no need of paper, pen, pencil & printouts, thus stepping into ' Go Green

Concept '. We can say, this is one of the major benefits of smart classroom

technology to keep nature clean and green.

Time Saving Technology

In contrast to the traditional learning method, where students had to make

long written notes. Smart class technology allows students to make presentations

online and get feedback from their teachers in less time. Same for teachers who do

not need to tell students to make rough notes, as presentation can be shared directly

with everyone. This saves a lot of time of teachers and students that can be used for

another interactive activity.

Increased Productivity

Data shared with the help of intelligent class technology is presented in a

visual format that is more likely to engage the students. Not only students’

involvement but, they understand things more easily in minimal time. This motivates

students and teachers accomplish pretty good results leading to improved

productivity.

B. Smart TV as a visual aid’s enhancer

x
SAINT JOSEPH INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Montilla Boulevard Butuan City, Philippines

Using the Smart TV will make the visuals bigger, clear and realistic images

that related to the lessons in every subject. It could expand their lesson experience

in one of the learning competencies of the subjects I handled, the community

engagement, solidarity and citizenship for grade 12, gives more scenarios to identify

opportunities to contribute to community development through solidarity, by showing

them sample videos from YouTube about the different problems in the community

and how can they contribute as a citizen and will help them in assessment of

selected community-action

initiatives. I could show them more realistic images or videos by showing them the

status of the community, showing them the real actions of the

methodologies/approaches in crafting action plan or how could they can invite or

gain partnership for the support or linkages of their community actions. Through the

Smart TV also, I could show them on how to analyze strategies of empowerment and

advocacy through community action. I could quickly browse and show some

community action advocacies posted in social media or the use of social media to

advocate community actions, or community action empowerment through social

media.

For my creative writing subject in grade 12, these are the objectives that I

could use a Smart TV in the classroom for my learners to easily, Identify various

elements, techniques, and literary devices used in drama; Analyze elements,

techniques, and literary devices found in a given drama; Express thoughts, feelings,

xi
SAINT JOSEPH INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY
Montilla Boulevard Butuan City, Philippines

and knowledge learned in drama through a guided analysis; and Write/compose a

one scene for a one act play applying the various elements, techniques, and literary

devices. Before conducting this lesson in creative writing in my grade 12 class, I

planned to use a projector to play some videos of drama or movies which related to

our topic, but unfortunately no projector is available that time. So, during that topic, I

just cited some k-drama or movies which they are familiar with to relate to our

lesson, and cited some scenarios in analysis of the types of plots of the story. It was

challenging to portray to them the sample videos of story which could relate to our

lessons, it takes time asking them multiple title of movies or k-dramas they are

familiar with which relates to our

lesson, because not all of them had watch the movie I mentioned. On the contrary,

my intervention was sending them the link of the movies to let them all watch it and

relate to our lesson then could be their basis in creating or composing a scenario to

present in the class with the application of various elements and techniques in

drama. The performance for that lesson was delayed, compared to using a Smart TV

which they could watch it directly in the classroom while relating it to our lesson, after

which they could make their own scenarios for enhancing or making a twist for the

ending of the story of the videos presented to them. See the difference, using a

Smart TV in the classroom would help the teacher and learners with flexibility and

efficiency in delivering their lessons in all subjects. It could portray more realistic

experience of visual aids as related to every lesson.

Conclusion and Recommendations

Television caters to the different learning styles of students, by offering a unique

combination of sight, sound, motion and emotion, which can give students a greater

understanding of the world around them. It provides a fast, user-friendly service,

allowing educators to search an immense database of audio-visual material, radio

material, study guides and web links in order to find material relevant to their teaching

area. Also, it is an excellent tool for illustrating the differences between literary genres,

for example comparing a novel to its movie adaptation, or comparing a newspaper

story to a television news story as related to creative writing subject or any subject

that would use a movie as a sample to relate its lesson. For teachers, using Smart TV

in the classroom, could help them save time in presentation of lessons, portrays

xiii
SAINT JOSEPH INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

lessons in multi-disciplinary, easily integrate lessons in all subjects and will enhance

them to become updated and efficient in teaching process. For learners, it will help

develop and increase personal understanding of the areas of learning when they

experience a successful and pleasant learning in the classroom when seen their

lessons in interesting and exciting presentations. Overall, it helps stimulates thinking

and improves learning environment in a classroom.

Some recommendations are the following:

1. Educators and administrators specially from rural schools should aim to be

modernize or embrace the digital rise program in education.

2. School heads should prioritize the digital rise program or the

purchase/provision of Smart TV in every classroom to support the teacher and

learners have a more meaningful and realistic learning.

3. Educators should aim to enhance learning process in the classroom with the

use of technological facilities practically such as Smart TV.

4. Learners should express their needs specifically in terms of learning realistic

and engaging with the use of technological facilities in learning process and

make use of the relevance of the facilities to expand their learning capacities.

5. The community and stakeholders should work together with the school and

support the needs of the school, the teacher and learners learning

development needs such as technological tools for the classrooms.
