1.0 Introduction
This design note presents the design of pier cap for piers supporting 31 m span on
left side and 25 m span on Right side. For details of pier cap, please refer to the drawings
as mentioned in the reference documents. The design has been carried out as per IRS codes,
Concrete Bridge Practice by Dr. V.K. Raina.
The design is carried out for shortest height of pier i.e. 9.343m (P337) with sharpest radius of 685m
Pier cap flexural reinforcement is calculated considering 2.0m diameter pier on safer side. However,
minimum reinforcement is calculted based on actual size of pier cap.
Seismic force is calculated considereing stiffer section i.e. 2.2m x 3.0m oblong shape

AsL satisfies equation 11 with the value of Ast calculated as in equation 10.a (Cl 15.4.4.4)
The pier cap has been designed as corbel in the transverse direction as the ratio of span by
depth is less than 0.6 as specified in the IRS.
In the longitudinal direction, the distance between the bearings centre is 1.7m and the size of
the equivalent square of the 2.0m diameter pier is 1.772m x 1.772m.
Therefore, the reinforcement in the pier caps in the longitudinal direction has been provided
as per the minimum reinforcement clause as given in Dr. V.K Raina's book.

The pier cap size (4.0m x 3.2m) is same for pier dia 2.0m and 2.2m.
In the Transverse direction, the distance between the bearings centre is 2.6m and the size of
the equivalent square of the 2.2m diameter pier is 1.95m x 1.95m. Hence, the lever arm is
(2.6/2-1.95/2) 0.325m in transverse direction which is less than 0.420m (0.420m is the lever arm
for 2.0m dia pier).
Here reinforcement required is considered same as 2.0m diameter pier on safer side,
which is as below:
2
Shear Friction reinforcement Avf = 14597.3 mm
2
Direct Tension reinforcement At = 4087.2 mm
2
FlexuralTension reinforcement Af = 6355.4 mm
The requirement of minimum reinforcement is same because size of pier cap for 2.0m
and 2.2m dia is same.
So, total Primary Tensile reinforcement
As = Af + At = 10443 mm2
In the longitudinal direction, the distance between the bearings centre is 1.7m and the size of
the equivalent square of the pier is 1.95m x 1.95m.
Therefore, the reinforcement in the pier caps in the longitudinal direction has been provided
as per the minimum reinforcement clause as given in Dr. V.K Raina's book.
