Module 3:
Specific Issues in STS
Lesson 11:
Climate Change

Introduction
• It is important to understand that weather and climate are not the
same thing.

Weather and Climate
Climate
The sum of all weather events that occur in a specific location over a period
of years. It is the area's average weather condition. Climate tells us what the
weather is typically like in the area where we live.
Weather
Is what is occurring outside at a certain location at a particular moment. It
can undergo dramatic changes in a short period of time. For instance, it may
rain at night and be bright in the morning.
What is Climate Change?
Climate change is a phrase that refers to the average long-term changes that
occur throughout the whole planet. These include warming temperature and
changes in precipitation patterns, as well as the consequences of Earth's
warming, such as:
• Rising sea levels
• Shrinking mountain glaciers
• Ice melting at a faster rate than usual in Greenland, Antarctica and the Arctic
• Changes in flower and plant blooming times.
The Earth's climate has been changing continuously for millennia, long before
humans arrived on the scene. However, scientists have recently discovered
some unexpected alterations. For example, during the last 150 years, the
Earth's average temperature has increased far faster than expected.
How Much Is Earth’s Climate Changing Right Now?
• The annual average
temperature in 2018
were around 0.83 °F
(1.5 °C) warmer than
the 1850 to 1980
mean. The past five
years are, collectively,
the warmest years in
the modern record. https://www.myccnews.org/(S(cj15x5bett4oehd0tn2zpted))/FactPages.aspx?Organization=YES
• As Earth’s climate continues to warm, the intensity and amount of rainfall during
storms such as hurricanes is expected to increase. Droughts and heat waves are
also expected to become more intense as the climate warms.
Understanding Climate Change
• The Earth has some very
important gasses in the
atmosphere that keeps us
warm.
• Some of these gases are
water vapor, carbon dioxide,
nitrous oxide, and methane.
• When the sun heats the
Earth, these gasses keep the
heat on the Earth’s surface.
Without these gasses, heat
would escape, making
Earth’s average surface
temperature 28°C to 33°C
colder, planet will freeze. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenhouse_effect
Enhancing the Greenhouse Effect
• Increasing the amount of
greenhouse gases in the
atmosphere, less heat
escapes into space, the
Earth’s temperature rises.
• This process is frequently
referred to as global
warming, although it is
more accurate to refer to it
as climate change.

Increase in Greenhouse Gases
https://geographical.co.uk/places/cities/item/2340-dossier-the-air-that-we-breath
https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/
• Modern climate change is caused by an excess of greenhouse gases.
• Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities like as burning fuel to power
industries, automobiles, and buses have altered the natural greenhouse.
These changes result in the atmosphere trapping more heat than it did
previously, resulting in a warmer Earth.
Effects of Climate Change
• Melting of glaciers will lead to higher sea level, which will cause
floods and put many low-elevation regions at risk of disappearing
under water.
• Melting of polar ice, polar bears and other animals are drowning.
• New and widespread diseases because of warm climate. Viruses
dating back millennia maybe was trapped in the arctic ice and will be
released when it melts.
• More wildfires. Warmer temperatures make flames more likely to
burn more fiercely.
What can be done?
• To begin, we must acknowledge that climate change has already occurred
and is a global issue. Second, we arrived here as a result of our lifestyle. As a
result, our way of life has to change. Finally, here are some options....

Renewable Energy Source Save Fuel Reduce Waste

• Climate change's worst consequences can be avoided if greenhouse gas
emissions are reduced to zero by the end of this century.
Conclusion
• Humans are currently confronted with the challenge of climate
change, and the ones who are generating these conflicts are also
human.
• Although it is difficult to completely stop global warming, people
may nevertheless help to mitigate and delay the progress of this
problem.
