REVOLT OF SUMUROY (1649-1650)
A native of Palapag, Samar. Sumuroy
encouraged the people to revolt.
He learned of the polo that Visayan men
would be sent to Cavite and work in the
shipyards to build galleons. That meant
that the men would leave their homes and
families.
On June 1, 1649, the uprising began. They
killed the parish priest and a free
government was also established in the
mountains of Samar.
Gov. Fajardo of Zamboanga heard of this
so he sent his best Spanish-Filipino forces
to Samar.
The battle lasted for a year and Sumuroy
won several fights.
But a surprise attack of the Spanish-
Filipino forces ended the revolt. Sumuroy was captured and later executed.
Good Morning everyone, I am Ana Janina Lumba and I am here to share and discuss to you about
the Revolt of Sumuroy. First of all, let’s talk about Agustin Sumuroy. Who is he and What is he like?
Agustin Sumuroy, also known as Juan Sumuroy was a Filipino hero and a Waray leader of the
Sumuroy Rebellion.
1. So in the town of Palapag today in Northern Samar, Agustin Sumuroy, a Waray, and some of
his followers rose in arms over the polo y servicio system being undertaken in Samar. This is
known as the Sumuroy Revolt, named after Agustin Sumuroy. It is a rebellion of native
Filipinos against colonial Spanish forces that occurred in eastern Visayas in 1649-1650.
2. The government in Manila directed that all natives subject to the polo are not to be sent to
places distant from their hometowns to do their polo. However, under orders of the various
town alcaldes, or mayors, Samarnons were being sent to the shipyards of Cavite to do their
polo, which sparked the revolt. So remember that when we say polo this means that All
Male Filipinos are going to be sent to different places to provide free labor, for many days in
a year.
3. The local parish priest of Palapag was murdered and the revolt eventually spread to
Mindanao, Bicol and the rest of the Visayas, especially in places such as Cebu, Masbate,
Camiguin, Zamboanga, Albay, Camarines and parts of northern Mindanao, such as Surigao.
And this is when Sumuroy chose the mountains as a natural fortress and withstood the
enemy attacks.
4, 5, 6. In June 1650, a strong army contingent was sent by the Governor and then the defeat,
capture and execution of Sumuroy in delivered a big setback to the revolt. His trusted ally which
is named David Dula sustained the quest for freedom with greater vigor but in one of a fierce
battles several years later, he was wounded, captured and later executed in Palapag, Northern
Samar by the Spaniards together with his seven key lieutenants and this is where I will end the
discsussion for the revolt of sumuroy for the next slide will be Resistance in the Interior and
Mountainous Parts by Ms. Kimperly Pascua. THANKYOU!!
