How to install the Bhaktivedanta VedaBase® Plugin for Unicode
This new, updated file will allow you to copy and paste text from the Bhaktivedanta VedaBase as
Unicode.
The plugin is “unsupported,” meaning that although it is tested and stable and should work fine, this
document gives the only help we’ll provide for installing or using it. If you need more help, please
consult your local geek.
The update is easy to install. You just replace one small file with another and then put new buttons on
your toolbar.
Optionally, you can also tell the VedaBase to use “Ctrl-C” to copy text as Unicode. Here’s the step-by-
step:
1. If you haven’t already done so, download the new file.
2. If you have the VedaBase program running, close it.
3. Find the directory where your VedaBase program files are installed.
(By default it would be “C:\Bhaktivedanta VedaBase 2003\”)
4. In that directory, find the file called “FcObj4.dll.”
5. Rename that file to “FcObj4.old.”
6. Paste the new file into that same directory. (To do this, either drag it there or copy and paste it.)
7. Start the VedaBase program.
8. On the VedaBase main menu, go to the “Tools” menu and choose “Customize.” A “Customize” box should
now appear.
9. In the Customize box, on the left-hand side, highlight “VedaBase Extension v3.”
Now you can customize your toolbar in the VedaBase window so that you can have the buttons you want.
10. On the right-hand side of the Customize popup, you’ll see six buttons. When you hover your cursor over
them, you can see their names. Drag onto the toolbar – wherever you wish – whichever buttons you want.
We recommend these four:
* Copy without Diacritics
* Copy without Diacritics with Ref
* Copy with Unicode
* Copy with Unicode with Ref
(We have included the old “Copy with diacritics” buttons, but unless you have a specific need for them, we
recommend you leave them aside and use the “Unicode” buttons instead.)
11. When you have the buttons you want in the places you want them, go to the “Customize” popup and click
“OK.”
12. You’re done.
Here’s how to make your Ctrl-C key copy text from the VedaBase as Unicode.
1. On the VedaBase main menu, go to the “Tools” menu and choose “Customize.” A “Customize” box should
now appear.
2. In the “Customize” box, near the top, choose the “Keyboard” tab.
3. In the “Command category” box, press the “down arrow” on the right, scroll down, and choose “VedaBase
Extension v3.” Now you can assign shortcut keys for any of the commands you see.
4. Let’s start with “Copy with Unicode.” Click on it to select it.
5. On the right, below the words “Press new shortcut key,” you will see a box, most likely showing the word
“None.” Click that box (or else press Alt-n, which does the same thing).
6. Press the keys for the shortcut you want to use. It’s up to you, but let’s choose Ctrl-C. For that shortcut,
press “Ctrl-C” (hold down the “Ctrl” key and press the letter “C”). You should see “None” change to the
shortcut you’ve chosen.
7. Click the button that says “Assign-->.” (In the middle of the box, the top button.)
8. If you’d like to assign a shortcut for another option, go ahead. For example, let’s make “Ctrl-Shift-C” the
shortcut for “Copy with Unicode with Ref.” Select “Copy with Unicode with Ref.” Click in the “Press new
shortcut key” box. Hold down the “Ctrl” key and together press the “Shift” key and “C.”
9. When you’ve assigned all the shortcuts you want, click “OK” at the bottom of the “Customize” box
10. You’re done.
If for some reason you want to uninstall this update and go back to what you had, just delete the new file
“FcObj4.dll.” Then rename “FcObj4.old” to “FcObj4.dll.”
NOTE: Although the new plugin lets you copy your text as modern Unicode, the Folio VedaBase still
internally uses old-technology fonts like “ScaTimes” or “ScaGoudy.” So don’t delete those files.
Thank you to Indupati Dasa for doing all the work to create this new Unicode plugin.
