REVISED KNOWLEDGE

1. What are wire splices/joints?

- SPLICES AND JOINTS. When working with electronic equipment or with electrical wiring, it
may from time to time become necessary to splice or join wires together. Splices and joints are
essentially the same thing. A splice joint is a method of joining two members end to end (It is
also applicable to wood works)
2. How to make wire splices/joints?
- To twist two wires together, you first need to strip the insulation off the wires. Next, hold the wires side
by side and twist them together with your thumb and forefinger. The resulting connection should be
fairly strong and hold together when a small tug is applied. (Open the given links above for the
procedures if you are online, but if you don’t have an Internet access, watch the video provided)

SUMMARY/ GENERALIZATION

In making splices and joints, it is important to note that the connections must be well made and the
wires are tightly joined to prevent a loss of voltage to the device powered. In high current situations a poor
connection causes heat at the connection and oxidation of the wires and no more or intermittent connections.

CONTENT DISCUSSION

COMMON ELECTRICAL SYMBOLS

Electrical Symbols are small drawings or pictograms used to represent various electrical devices in a
diagram or plan of an electrical circuit. These symbols are used in sketching schematic diagrams and
electrical plans for numerous types of electrical works. Practically any electrical fixture found in a house has
a symbol that coincides to said fixture on an electrical wiring diagram. These are very useful guide for an
electrician or electrical contractor, thus, making the wiring easier to install as well.

The following are common electrical symbols used in sketching wiring plan and diagram.

ELECTRICAL SIGNS
Your power tool with its manual may contain "WARNING ICONS" (a picture symbol intended to
alert you to, and/or to instruct you how to avoid a potentially hazardous condition). Knowing and
understanding these symbols will help you operate your tool better and more safely
Electrical signs and stickers alert students, workers, and visitors to electrical hazards in the area.
Alerting workers to high voltage areas, electrical hazards, power lines and other electrical equipment in the
area, can help prevent fires and injuries. Proper electrical signs can inform workers of the dangers in the
area.

17
REVISED KNOWLEDGE

1. Why are symbols and signs important?

Sign and symbol are important because they convey the message without saying a word, they
convey same information more precisely and in brief.
For example- if we want to say all the best then by gesture we can say this as by showing
upward thumb that's indicate the same thing and that's way we can exchange information
without uttering words.
In hazardous or prone areas by danger sign we can earn others. there are many such examples.

2. Why do we need to know the different symbols and signs in electricity?

Electrical symbols can be used to represent various electrical equipment. In an electrical
diagram, electrical equipment is represented with the help of electric symbols. Electrical
drawings are usually drawn in a style called ladder diagram and another form of drawing is a
wiring diagram. Electrical wiring diagrams use single lines from each device exactly as it
would be wired. Electronic schematic uses symbols for each component found in an electrical
18
circuit. Mostly electrical diagrams are multi-sheet drawings that show the wiring of the
electrical devices related to the main control panel. Mostly electrical diagrams are drawn as a
ladder diagram. Electrical diagrams are drawn between vertical lines or ladder all devices are
shown between the lines and they are referred to as single-line diagrams. Controlled such as
relays and devices are drawn on the right side. Control devices and switches are placed
between controlled devices and the left vertical line. Overloads and other circuit breaking
devices are connected to the right of the controlled device.

SUMMARY/ GENERALIZATION

Electrical symbols are used to simplify the drafting and to understand the drawing. Electrical
symbols are standardized throughout the industry. The addition of a line, dot, shading, letters,
and numbers gives a specific meaning to a symbol. In order to achieve the ability to interpret
the drawings and their related symbol meanings, we must learn the basic form of various
symbols. Electrical symbols are required to do the electrical drawing and without the help of
electrical symbols, we won’t be able to do the electrical drawing. Electrical circuits are
represented by electrical drawings. Symbols and number combinations are used to represent
electrical circuits. Electrical drawings can be used to convey information about a wide range
of details such as Electrical wiring, pneumatic or hydraulic layouts, location of the equipment,
and details of the equipment. By using electrical drawing, we would be able to locate the
equipment.

CONTENT DISCUSSION

ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM

A wiring diagram is a simplified conventional pictorial representation of an electrical circuit. It
shows the components of the circuit as simplified shapes, and the power and signal connections
between the devices.

The flow of current in a conductor or wire can be represented by diagram.

There are two types of diagrams: pictorial diagram and schematic diagram.

A. Pictorial diagram is a sketch of electrical circuit that shows the external appearance of each
component. It is much like a photograph of the circuit and uses simple images of parts

Sample Pictorial diagram of one bulb controlled by single pole switch using 9-volt battery
source.

B. Schematic diagram is a sketch showing the components of the circuit using standard electrical
symbols. It shows the actual number of components and how the wiring is routed but not the actual
location.

22
Sample schematic diagrams of one bulb controlled by single pole switch using direct current (Diagram A) and
alternating current (Diagram B) source.

Two types of circuit.

1. Series Circuit is a circuit in which lamps are arranged in a chain, so that the current has only one
path to take. The current is the same through each load. Example of this is the Christmas lights.
It consists of a number of bulbs that are connected side by side to meet the voltage requirement
which is 220 volts for alternating current.

2. Parallel Circuit is a circuit in which lamps are connected across the wires. The voltage across each load
on parallel circuit is the same. The advantage of using parallel circuit is that even if one of the lamps fails,
still the remaining lamps will function.

SUMMARY/ GENERALIZATION
A wiring diagram is simply a pictorial representation of all the electrical connections in a specific
circuit. The wiring diagram shows different components in a circuit via different shapes and symbols. These
diagrams are an effective way of showing how wires are interconnected with different components in a
system.
Wiring diagrams are mainly used when trying to show the connection system in a circuit. It is
majorly used by building planners, architects, and electricians to present the wiring connections in a
building, a room, or even a simple device. They can be accommodating when determining a fault in the
connections, installing new wires and devices, locating electrical outlets, etc. \

Wiring Diagram VS Schematic Diagram

Schematic diagrams are electrical layouts that mainly focus on the basic plan and function rather
than its physical location. In contrast, the wiring diagram shows how wires are connected to a device and
what will be their exact physical location in a circuit. Let's have a look at their differences with the help of a
table.

CONTENT DISCUSSION:

In this week-lesson, we are going to discuss computation and scheduling of loads, you will
learn the process and steps in computation and scheduling of load and of course how to sketch
electrical plan

SIMPLE ELECTRICAL PLAN

The electrical plan is sometimes called as electrical drawing or wiring diagram. It is a type of
technical drawing that delivers visual representation and describes circuits and electrical
systems.

Example 1.

27
LAMP OUTLET (LO) CONVENIENCE OUTLET (CO)

SCHEDULE of LOAD

Ckt # Description Volt Voltage Ampacity Quantity Size of

Ampere(Watt wire
)
1 Lighting 300 230 15 3 2.00mm2
outlet (LO)
2 Convenience 540 230 20 3 3.5mm2
Outlet (CO)
3 ACU(1HP) 1840 230 20 1 3.5mm2
TOTAL 2680 Watts

COMPUTATION of LOAD

Lamp Outlet (LO )=number of lamp X 100 watts

1 Volt Ampere (VA) = 1 watt
LO = 3 X 100 watts
LO= 300 VA or 300 WATTS (LOAD FOR THE LIGHTING)

Convenience outlet ( CO )=number of outlet x 180

CO = 3 x 180 watts
CO = 540 VA or 540 Watts (LOAD FOR THE CONVENIENCE OULET

Airconditioning Unit load =ampacity x voltage

Ampacity equivalent for horsepower (Hp) set by PEC
Horse power Ampacity
1.5 HP 10A
1 HP 8A
½ HP 6A
¾ HP 7A

ACU(1HP) = 8A x 230
= 1840 Watts (load for the ACU)

Solving for the size of the SEC and the ampacity of the MCB

Service Entranceconductor ( SEC )=¿

Service Entrance conductor ( SEC )=¿]

Service Entrance conductor ( SEC )=13.6521 A
= 14 A
Use 2 poles 30A main circuit breaker (MCB) -minimum circuit breaker
2 pieces 5.5 mm2 THHN Service entrance conductor

Riser Diagram:

28
Example 2.
Compute for the load with the given fixtures
1. 8 bulbs
2. 8 convenience outlets
3. ½ HP -ACU
4. ¾ HP- ACU
5. 1/2HP- Water pump (pressure pump)
Solution:
Schedule of Load
Ckt Description Quantit VA V A Size of wire
# y
1 LO (lamp outlet) 8 800 230 15 2.0mm2
2 CO (Convenience outlet) 8 1440 230 20 3.5mm2
3 1/2HP ACU 1 1380 230 20 3.5 mm2
4 3/4HP ACU 1 1610 230 20 3.5mm2
5 1 HP WP 1 1840 230 20 3.5mm2
TOTAL Volt Ampere (VAT) 7070

Computation of Load:

Lamp outlet load Convenience outlet load

LO = 8 X 100watts = 800 watts (VA) CO = 8 X 180watts = 1440 watts (VA)

½ ACU load ¾ ACU load

ACU = 6A X 230 V = 1380VA ACU = 7A X 230 V = 1610 VA
1 HP Water pump
WP = 8A x 230 V = 1840 VA

Computation for the size of SEC and Main Circuit Breaker (MCB)
VA + 25 % ( HRM )
SEC=[ T ]
Volt
7070+25 ( 1840 )
SEC=[ ] = 32.74 A
230

Therefore use: 2 poles 40A main circuit breaker (Standard Main Circuit Breaker)
2 pieces 8.0 mm2 THHN SEC

REVISED KNOWLEDGE

1. How to compute for electric load?

29
Steps
1. Identify the number of fixtures use
2. Compute for the load of each fixture separately
For lamp load use: LO= number of lamps x 100w
For Convenience outlet: CO = number of outlet x 180 watts
For ACU or other motorize appliances: the ampacity equivalent to the power x 230
1 HP = 8A ½ HP = 6A
1.5 HP = 10A ¾ HP = 7A
2. Why is there a need to compute for the load before installation of electricity?

The purpose of the residential electrical load calculation is to accurately determine the size of
the electrical service based upon the electrical equipment that will be installed. The national
electrical codes are the basis of making sure the electrical service is sized properly and
installed correctly.

FINAL KNOWLEDGE

Total electrical capacity of an electrical service is measured in amperage (amps). In very old homes with
knob-and-tube wiring and screw-in fuses, you may find the original electrical service delivers 30 amps.
Slightly newer homes (built before 1960) may have 60-amp service. In many homes built after 1960 (or
upgraded older homes), 100 amps is the standard service size. But in large, newer homes, 200-amp service
is now as a minimum, and at the very top end, you may see 400-amp electrical service installed.

How Much Does It Cost to Own a Tiny House?

How do you know if your current electrical service is adequate, or how do you plan for new electrical
service? Determining this requires a little math to compare total available capacity against the
likely load  that will be placed on that capacity.
