MALE PROSTITUTION MANUSCRIPT For Printing

This document discusses male prostitution in the Philippines. It begins by providing context on the global sex work industry and perceptions of sex work. It then focuses on male prostitution, defining it as men providing sexual services in exchange for payment, though compensation is not always monetary. The document notes that while illegal in the Philippines, there are many male prostitutes known by terms like "rent boys" and "Juan dela Cruz." The remainder explores experiences of male prostitutes who have worked in provinces like Angeles City, as male prostitution remains an understudied issue compared to female prostitution.

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

INTRODUCTION

Most lucrative, most persuasive and the world’s oldest job of all time (Patton, 2017).

A job that has been around for thousands of years in one form or another. Whether for

money, trade, and protection, people have been selling their “goods” across the globe since

the advent of “quid pro quo” (Kantor, 2016).

Perceptions of this job are based on culturally determined values that differ between

societies. In some societies, workers of this job have been viewed as members of a

recognized profession; in others they have been shunned, reviled, and punished with

stonoing, imprisonment, and death (Ivory, 2015).

The commercial sex business is a multibillion-dollar industry.  It includes escort

services, outcall services, prostitution tourism, streetwalkers, strippers, adult or child

pornography, and video or internet pornography.  These different professions seem to

cover three main areas – pornography, prostitution, and striptease. There seems to be the

most intersection between prostitution and striptease with many sex workers entering the

industry through these two areas and switching between the two over the span of their

careers (Holland, 2002).

Over the last twenty or so years the strip club industry has grown exponentially in most of

the industrialised world (Jefferys, 2008). Strip clubs have been the setting in several American

feature films such as Showgirls and Striptease as well as being a common background scene in

many mainstream television programmes, films and music videos. More recently, there has also

been an upsurge in the mainstreaming of stripper culture, with gyms offering ‘strippercise’

programmes, exercise Digital Video Discs (DVDs) based on stripper moves, the popularisation of
2

‘stripper-wear’ (such as the very high heeled shoes), pole dancing classes and ‘hen’s nights’ that

often have stripper pole lessons.

In 2010, Mustafa cited that prostitution and stripping professions are essentially the same.

Both professions require teasing, sensual touching, being naked for a period of time and getting

paid for that. There are strip joints all around and they are just doing the same thing as

prostitution but they are not going all the way. It is not surprising if within strip joints they all do

sex to go on for extra money. The key here is money. This is a male dominated society and sex is

a major part of the male psyche. Strippers and porn are substitute for the real thing to "ease" their

desire.

Many prostitutes reported starting as a stripper before finally becoming a prostitute.

Again, the motivation is financial and they feel it will be an easier and quicker way to make

more money. Being that the primary motivation for strippers and streetwalkers is financial,

a closer evaluation of the system through which they make their money is needed. The

number of ‘volunteer’ streetwalkers is considered to be very low.  Most often any sex

worker who does it purely for enjoyment, which is  very  rare, is found in higher-class fetish

communities (Sarah, 2012).

Prostitution has existed in almost every society since the dawn of history. It is the common

problem of every country especially in the Philippines that has a numerous or has a large number

of operations of prostitution. Prostitution is often quoted as the world's oldest profession. There is

no doubt that prostitution has been around since the first recordings of history (Larson & Lewis,

2015).

“Prostitution”, refers to the practice of engaging in relatively indiscriminate sexual activity,

in general with someone who is not a spouse or a friend, in exchange for immediate payment in
3

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

money or other valuables. Prostitutes may be female or male or transgender, and prostitution may

entail heterosexual or homosexual activity, but historically most prostitutes have been women and

most clients are men (Ivory, 2015).

In layman’s term, prostitution is defined in a negative way, where talents are misused.

Additionally, a prostitute assumes a prototype of a woman, conveying that women are the sole

purveyors of sexual services. Yet, men in history have engaged in the selling of their bodies

just as women. Recently, scholars have attempted to remove negative connotation

associated with the selling of sex and tried to reframe the definition without placing value-based

judgment. Scholars have used “sex work” in replacement of “prostitution” (Sarah, 2002).

Steering away from the value-based definition of “prostitution” and heading towards a more

neutral definition, male sex work is defined as “the adult exchange of direct physical contact sexual

services for monetary gain.” However, it is noted that compensation for sex services is not always

monetary, but there are alternative ways of compensating male sex workers. Beyond the monetary

compensation, scholars have attempted to add other dimensions to the definition such as: support

of livelihood necessities (i.e. food, shelter, etc. and other items of monetary values (i.e. drugs,

clothes, cosmetics, luxury goods, overseas vacation, drugs, etc. Moreover, to distinguish male sex

workers (MSW) from other forms of sexual relationships with benefits such as marriage, the

dimension of “hired” service or employment is added to the definition (Bungay and Atchison,

2016).

Matthews, (2014) stated that there are two types of prostitution, the female prostitution

and the male prostitution. In female prostitution, women are involved in prostitution and they are

amongst the most victimized group of people in society. Even liberals and libertarians find it

difficult to deny this, particularly in relation to trafficking and the involvement of children. While
4

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

according to Savage, (2012) the male prostitution is the practice of men providing sexual services

in return for payment. It is a form of sex work. Although clients can be any gender, the vast

majority are male.

Male prostitution is a globalized phenomenon, existing in almost all countries and expanding

rigorously into the digital world (Nguyen, 2017). Male prostitution is on the rise in different parts of

Asia. A growing number of men is prostituting themselves (Gales, 2015). It is the common problem

of every country especially in the Philippines that has a numerous or has a large number of

operations. Prostitution in the Philippines is officially illegal; penalties range up to life imprisonment

for those involved in trafficking, which is covered by the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003

(Domingo & Guillasper, 2015).

As with its female counterpart, male prostitution has generally been regarded as deeply

problematic, either because of negative societal attitudes to the selling of sex or the prevalence of

psychosocial and economic problems amongst those attracted to MSW and the attendant health

risks and dangers encountered whilst engaged in it. The sexual risk for the worker and client has

long been the subject of particular public concern due to the fear of sexually transmitted infections,

especially HIV, all of which have proved influential in directing the research focus. (Wilcox &

Christmann, 2006)

The strong social disapproval upon the prostitutes makes it extremely difficult for them to

avoid personal demoralization. Like the female prostitution, male prostitution is the practice of

engaging in sexual acts for money. Compared to female sex workers, MSW is infrequently studied

by researchers. In other countries there are many types of male prostitutes but not similar to our

country. Male prostitutes are known by various names and euphemisms including male escorts,

gigolos, rent-boys, models, masseur and hustlers. The term “rent-boy” is derived from the boys
5

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

“renting” themselves out. A man who does not regard himself as gay, but who is prepared to have

sex with male clients for money, is sometimes called “gay for pay” or “rough trade” (Ciego, 2015.)

The researchers use the name “Juan dela Cruz or Juan,” pertaining to an ordinary Filipino

man, “Juan” was coined when a certain Robert McCulloch Dick served as a court reporter at The

Manila Times in 1902. He noticed the frequency with which the names appeared on police blotters

and court dockets. Later on, McCulloch-Dick widened his idea of Juan until he made Juan dela Cruz

as a typical Filipino. Juan dela Cruz is associated with the image of a naïve-looking man wearing a

salakot, camisa de chino, native trousers and slippers (The Manila Times, 2014).

Being the oldest known profession, researchers want to investigate and explore the

experiences of a male prostitute who worked in the different provinces specifically in Angeles City,

Pampanga. Hence, this study chose male prostitution, because it is far less studied. Studies among

men who sell sex to either men or women are much rarer than female prostitution wherein almost

of the researches that has been conducted are about the female sex workers (Bindel, 2010). The

world of male prostitution is not much explored that is why there are many unheard stories of male

sex workers.

In line with the aforementioned realities, the researchers wanted to listen on the unheard

voices of the male prostitutes to change the views and perceptions of the society to them, as well

as to find a bigger picture on why did they engage in this field of work, their psychological well-

being and their medical condition. Also, to reach the target respondent of the study as well as to

enlighten the perception of the society, religious sector and the government towards the situation

of the MSW particularly the male prostitutes.

Statement of the Problem

The study sought to answer the following:

6

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondent in terms of:

1.1 Age;

1.2 Religion;

1.3 Socio Economic Status; and

1.4 Civil Status.

2. What are the conditions or circumstances that led the respondent to engage in

prostitution?

3. What are the respondents’ experiences about prostitution?

4. How do these experiences affect the respondents’ over all psychological well being?

Scope and Delimitation

This study focused on the unheard stories of a male sex worker in the Province of

Pampanga specifically in Angeles City, located near Clark Air Force Base, for it is known as the red

light district or the “Mecca Sex Trade,” military adult-entertainement capital of the Philippines in

1974.

The participant was delimited to one participant, single or in a relationship status. The

study focused on the experiences of a male sex worker who is taking part in any sexual work to

address his needs and wants. The study was limited to a male sex worker, should be at his legal

age while conducting the interview and must be self-confessed.

Significance of the Study

To the Respondent, who will be the primary beneficiary of this research study, in a

manner that he may be able to reveal and share his untold stories as a sex worker. This study can

empower him to contribute for the change and his life’s endeavour. It will serve as an inspiration

for him to change his lifestyle and face another chapter in his life.
7

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

To the Academe, this study provides information that there is a kind of system like this. In

addition, this study aims to open new opportunities in preventing male and female students in

engaging in this kind of work. It will serve as a revelation to the academe and create an

intervention on how to solve this kind of issues on reaching the education we deserve.

To the Society, this study can contribute to the society by spreading awareness that male

prostitution is a rising social problem. Moreover, this study seeks to clarify the thinking of each

individual, towards the MSW’s. This study will provide new learnings to the society and will make

clear understanding towards the situations of the male sex workers. Through their experiences and

situations, the society may relate the situation to the real life so that they may be able to

understand clearly, why they engaged on sex works.

To the Religious Sectors, this research study will be a revelation to the religious sectors

of our community. This study is contrary to the will of the church. Furthermore, this study will

serve as a guide to the religious sector to create a move to solve societal issues that continuously

rises. Through this revelation, the religious sectors may find the right way to approach and guide

the male sex workers to change the path of their lives.

METHODOLOGY

This section presents the methodology that the researchers employed in the present study.

Specifically, this chapter discusses the research design, participants, instrument, data collection,

ethical considerations, and data analysis.

Research Design

This study used qualitative research design to further discuss the different situations of the

MSW’s. According to Crossman 2015, qualitative research is a type of social science research that

collects and works with non-numerical data and that seeks to interpret meaning from these data

that help us understand social life through the study of targeted populations or places.

Furthermore, the researchers used descriptive case study approach to explain and narrate

the unheard stories of the participants. Descriptive case study aims to analyze the sequence of

interpersonal events after a certain amount of time has passed. In addition, case study research

paper examines a person, place, event, phenomenon, or other type of subject of analysis in order

to extrapolate key themes and results that help predict future trends, illuminate previously hidden

issues that can be applied to practice, and/or provide a means for understanding an important

research problem with greater clarity.

Research Participant

The target participant of this study was a male prostitute who is on his legal age and

currently working in the field of sex work.

The researchers used a purposive sampling technique in choosing the respondent for this

study. A purposive sampling is a non-probability sample that will select the respondent based on

the characteristics of a particular group and is purposefully sought for the study.
9

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

This study provided characterization of experiences and feelings about their chosen work as

a male prostitute in Angeles City, Pampanga.

Research Instrument

The researchers used an unstructured interview for the respondent. The unstructured

interview helped the researchers to gain in depth and more personal information about the topic.

This is used to extract the information in a form of personal talk to the respondent.

According to Wisker (2009), interviews can provide both detailed information you set out to

collect some fascinating contextual or other information. The researchers gathered data through

conducting a face-to-face interview with the respondent.

Data Collection

In this study, the researchers at their legal age, together with their research adviser went

to one of the bars at Angeles City to ask the owner for a permission, thru the manager via phone

call, to conduct an interview about male prostitution. Due to the unavailablity of the male

prositutes for their “Big Night,” (Friday and Saturday) the researchers were instructed to return on

a free night - Sunday to proceed with the interview.

The researchers found a participant who met the qualifications based on the given criteria.

During the interview, they first presented the informed written consent before conducting the

interview proper. After that, they informed and discussed the topic, the objectives, the purpose and

the procedure of the study to the respondent, so that it would result to a well-conducted interview.

Furthermore, the researchers made use of an audio-recorder to prevent future loss of data

and to refer back to the interview for the transcriptions of findings. In addition, they also made use

of handwritten notes to record the bodily movements and facial expressions of the participant. Any
10

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

of this helped the researchers to communicate with the respondent in obtaining the needed

information.

In addition to the aforementioned, the researchers made a connection with the participant

through the follow-up questions asked by the researchers. Then, after the data gathering process

the audio-recorded interview was transcribed including the hand-written notes.

Ethical Consideration

With all due respect to the ethical aspect of research, the researchers obtained first the

authority from the facilitator, principal, before conducting the study. Consents were given to ask

permission for the participant’s active participation throughout the study.

Rest assured that the participation of the participant was voluntarily and he was not forced

to participate during the conduct of the study. He had the right not to answer questions that were

against his will and his decisions were truly respected. Any personal information such as identity

and privacy of the participant was confidential and was only disclosed with the researchers. And

lastly, all information obtained throughout the process of the project has been cited appropriately.

Data Analysis

Right after the gathered data has been recorded, researchers analysed and interpreted

the transcrived interview. With the help of the respondent, the researchers gained more

understandings of the subject from listening and reading the transcribed interviews.

Coding the data began once all the data was fully transcribed. Collaizzi’s Method (1978) is

employed as a technique in analyzing research data; it is an approach to interpret qualitative

research data and to identify meaningful information that needs to be organized into themes or

categories. In the first step, the data was analysed from the stories told by the participant.

Afterwards, the researchers began to transcribe the statement that should had been directly stated
11

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

by the participant. The data was then analysed, categorised and organised into themes and further

sub-themes, which emerged through the process. The themes, emerged, were assigned

accordingly.

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

FINDINGS

This section contains presentation, interpretation, and analysis of all the gathered data and

information on the unheard stories of a male prostitute. All the following results from the actual

execution of the interview were based from the participant of the study.

The respondent is a 32-year-old male prostitute, a catholic, and a graduate of Bachelor of

Science in Hotel and Restaurant Management. According to him, he already worked in the different

parts of the Philipppines including Manila, Iloilo and at this time working in Angeles City, Pampanga

as a Male Prostitute for around (7) seven years.

I. NATURE OF WORK

In this context, the researchers distinguished how the participant reacted on the nature of

their work to others. The researchers found the self-reflection of the participant about the

difference of their work to other regular works, likewise on the difference of their work from female

prostitution and, on how they use their physical appearance to earn living . They also observe that

he seems to be positive when he talks about his work, and he can still see himself staying longer in

this work.

This nature of work that the participant entering is not an easy job, dealing with the

everyday customers waiting for them to pick them up, focusing on their appearance and dealing

with outcomes that the customer brings as part of their regular job.

Difference of Prostitution from other works. The response of the participant on the

difference of their work to the common work is quite optimistic, since he feel s positive and

entertained whenever he goes to work everyday. The difference is that they work with different
13

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

clients to entertain them in exchange of something that was beneficial to them, he uttered that

“kaibahan ng trabaho namin? Nakabikini kami tapos magmo-model. ” [(The) difference of our work

(from other common work)? we do modeling while wearing bikinis.]

However, he revealed some things that are not known by the community. He uttered on

one of his answers “kase nandidiri yung iba, akala nila ay yuck!

(other people loathe our job, they do not know that it

is not that lascivious. And It is like your just watching a bikini open.) He also disclosed the

transaction between him and the client happens, “kapag show up, ipapatawag ka nun tapos

(When the show up comes, they will call for you and will give you some drinks , all of us are on the

stage and then the costumer will pick from us to entertain or accompany them).

Female VS Male Prostitution. After asking him the difference of their work and of the female

prostitutes he stated some examples and differences. One of it is the limitation of the

entertainment, According to him, “Mas matino pa nga trabaho namin kesa mga babae e. totoo

lang. May VIP sila (female prostitutes) may kwarto, kami wala, bawal yun,” (Our job is a lot more

decent than the females. They have their VIPs, they have rooms and we don’t have, it is

prohibited).

(we are just like in the bikini open,

we are just adding fashion and dance. They just thought that we do sex, but the truth is we don’t.

It depends to us if we will agree to go out with our costumer.)

14

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

On the other hand, the participant described the female prostitutes as “All the way sila,

[you can do anything to them

(female prostitutes) since they can be inside a VIP room]

There is quite a difference when it comes to the nature of a sex work, Female Prostitutes

tend to work in this kind of industry with sexual acts to have money. On the other hand, Male

prostitutes tend to entertain for money, and sex will follow to the prostitute if they will agree with

the costumer. It seem like Female Prostitutes are submissive towards the costumers and the

management, while the Male Prostitutes are a lot more assertive when it comes to their costumers

and to their rights.

Physical Appearance. In every job that a person should be interested, there are these assets or

the strengths that needs to be consider. They may vary according to the type of job but they are

essential in every routine they have.

At first, you need to have a great body and a good looking face to satisfy the customer's

preferrence on looks.

syempre titignan nila yung ano mo... (Pisikal?) "... Oo" (Here they will look at your face first to

decide if you're okay in the work.. "Physical?" "Yes". The customers look for good physique and

good looking men to give them entertainment.

II. FINANCIAL STABILITY

In every job there needs to be a profit. In this case, the participant’s profit comes primarily

from his customers. He has his own profit by working in the club, he also received tips and gifts

that give the participant the willingness to engage in that kind of work.
15

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

Salary. The repondent even admitted, “Tulad ng iba yung sinasabi n’yo ang daming trabaho bakit

ng lahat , kung bakit may itsura raw yung mga nag-aano (those who are working as a prostitute)?

naman kasi yung pera, so practical lang, easy money.” (like what the other people say, there are a

lot of jobs available. They even question us why did we enter in this kind of job because we have

the looks. We have different reasons as to why we are in this field. Some were left by their

partners that’s why they entered this work to entertain themselves. I entered this work because of

practicality, easy money.)

In terms of salary, he quoted "kasi 200 lang yung budget namin dito (per day), kada isang

drinks namin isang daan sa amin yun." (We only have 200 pesos a day, and for every drink we

have the half of it.)

Tips. Having the minimum salary, it is just necessary for the respondent to depend on the tips

given by the costumers. According to him, his biggest tip was when a costumer just asked him to

dance. "Ano, kukulang sa P200,000 ata, oras lang, " (less than P200,000 I guess, for hours only).

However, they usually earn atleast less than (P10,000) ten thousand for two nights, he stated

“Two nights? Ala, maliit lang. Kulang sampu,” pertaining to the customers who gave them money

just by entertaining them.

One of the things that he received from his client is his necklace, “Eto (pointing to the

16

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

eh kasi costumer lang yan” (One of my costumer gave me (P100,000) one hundred thousand

pesos and I bought with it this necklace. I deposit the rest of the money I have because I know

that the costumer is not there to last.)

III. EXPERIENCES AT WORK

Being in the field of sex work for around 7 years, the respondent gained different

experiences in his chosen work. There are times that the respondent encountered different types

of clients to entertain as well as different risks or threat to his health and environment.

Clientle. Clients are different in age and gender. Some are going to the bar to simply watch the

show, and some are patronizing the bar for them to be entertained by a prostitute.

Age and Gender

The participant mentioned that the customers are mostly women, “ Mga babae ,maraming

babae, mahina ako sa mga bakla-bakla mukha daw kasi akong badboy,“ (Women, lots of women,

I’m not popular to Gays they said I look like a badboy). According to him, his customers’ age

ranges from twenty to twenty-nine years old and above “twenty-nine pataas, pinakabata na yung

twenty,” (Twenty-nine year old above and the youngest is twenty).

Entertaining a Client

Entertaining the costumers is the primary job description of a male prostitute. The

participant treat his clients just like a normal person, by hugging, talking face to face and maybe

cuddling a little. The participant quoted " Ala yung parang, yung paano ano lang, yung parang

normal na kwentuhan ganon,” (Like just having a normal conversation).

17

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

Handling a Mad Client

There is also an instance wherein a costumer tries to make him jealous over the other male

(Just like one of my

customers here, a bit older. She’s hard to please, she wants me to feed her. She’s making me

jealous, as if I will be jealous).

The participant gives professionalism and handles his clients with care. The participant

uttered "Wala iniintindi nalang, kasi customer is always right e, " (I’ll just leave it like that, because

the customer is always right). If the participant will lose his temper to his customers, the boss will

be mad at him for doing so, that is why the participant just understands his customers whatever

the cause.

Danger At Work. The risk of experiencing harm and hazard on every job is part of their daily

routine as workers. Danger at workplace exist not only to the place that he has been considering

as his second home.

He also faces danger at his work. He has been scared to do any sexual activities with his

customers because he might acquire sexually transmitted diseases. He also admitted that had

experienced sex abuse from his customers. Lastly, the participant stated that the other club

members are using drugs to boost their morale in dancing and in entertaining their customers or

client.

Sex Transmitted Disease (STD)

In his chosen field, having any sexual intercourse can possibly happen because of the

nature of the work itself. But the participant chose not to engage on it. The respondent shared,
18

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

ayokong magkasakit e, mahirap na” (I don’t want to acquire diseases).

Sexual Abuse

In his (7) seven years career as a prostitute different sexual abuse had happened but as he

share his unforgettable experience he emphasized that “ Parang bakla, gusto niya akong ilabas,

pinipilit niya kahit magkano.

” (I think he’s bisexual, he wants me to go

out with him for any cost. He’s like a foreigner. He wanted to take me from behind). In his job it is

not impossible that he will experience sexual abuse regardless of gender.

Death Threat

The environment plays a big role in the respondent’s well being. Having a numerous threats

via text message or in any form affects the respondent. He said that someone told him that “ wag

daw akong maglalabas” (I should not go out) which was about one of his client that has a partner.

In this job, it is impossible to remove the danger regarding his life and safety.

Use of Drugs

Different situations and incident can happen in the respondents surrounding. Getting

involved to different issues such as using drugs is not new to the surrounding they have. Not

because of the connutation about their work but based on reality that drugs have been their great

enemy.

The respondent indicates that some of them cannot save money because of the vices they

have. He stated that “Wala silang kinikita kung saan saan nila dinadala. Yung iba, kumikita pinang

da-drugs,” (They are not earning because they are engaging in drugs). It is not impposible that
19

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

vices will find their way to the respondent’s life but some of them knows where to put their money,

this is an indication that danger around them can happen anytime.

Emotion At Work. Experiences of the participant in his line of work also affect his emotions and

psychological state. He said that at first he felt ashamed but as time goes by he got used to it and

it is like a normal routine to him. He can also feel any guilt about his but he said that he has his

reasons and he needs to do his job for his daily needs.

Psychological well-being

The participants said that he is psychologically fine when he was asked about his reaction

to others perspective about their work, the participant did not consult to any psychologist, yet he

was positive in his life, ignoring those bad comments they are receiving about their work, the

( As if its their first time seeing someone like that, of course for us

it is just normal, we don’t usually go outside).

Guilt

The participant still a human who commit something unclean but not sexually, he still feel a

bit of shy while he was interviewed by the researchers. Hence, he stated that “ itong trabaho na ito

ay hindi malinis pero hindi siya sexual, parang nanunuod ka lang ng bikini open” (This job is not

decent but is not sexual, it’s as if you are watching a bikini open). Also, he was asked about his

religion if he felt any guilt whenever he passes by the church, he said “Syempre kahit dumadaan

(Of course, everytime I pass by the church, While I’m at my

motorcycle I asks forgiveness to Him like, “Please forgive me for my work requires meeting anyone

or strangers” I don’t have a choice, God already understands it).

IV. SUPPORT

In this context, the way how this family, friend and even other people react or see on job is

a big factor on the respondents well-being. Getting a positive or negative feedback about his work

affect him big time.

The participant also has his fair share of family and friends that supports him in his chosen

work. When the researcher asked him if his work is okay with his family he stated that at first he

kept it a secret but as time comes they finally found out and they were okay with it. Also his

friends just laugh at him when they found out that he had that kind of job and they're okay with it.

And finally his partner doesn't want him to go to his workplace anymore but he said that he just

wants the job to be a hobby and explained it to his partner.

Interpersonal Relationships. In this context, it will show the different ways on how the

respondent reacts on his environment and to the personalities around him.

Co-workers

The participant and his co workers treat each other like brothers. The participant said

(For example I

don’t have a costumer, they will ask their client to give us some drinks).
21

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

Friends

The participants work is not a big deal to his friends, they just think it is funny because of his work.

The participant quoted “Wala tawa sila ng tawa pinapaexample lang ako ” (My friends just laughed

and they want me to do a sample).

Family

Working in that kind of environment requires a firm reason to stay. As for the respondent,

he mentioned that he is the breadwinner of their family since his older siblings already have their

own families. There was this one instance when he gave presents to his family, “Syempre ano e ah

naka ano ako e yung parang may pinapadeliver ako r’on, isang truck mga appliances tapos sinasabi

(At first there was

a truck full of furnitures that was being delivered to our house, my brother wondered what’s

happening and I said that I had a Korean customer. I shared to my customer that we don’t have

things at our house so she bought those furnitures for me. My family became happy about it.)

Partner

Based from his stories, he met his partner in the bar that he is working. She is a regular

costumer. As he stated, “ tsaka nakapag asawa ako dito, diyan ko rin nakilala” (I even met my wife

here). The researchers find out that acquiring a partner for serious relationship can also happen in

this kind of setting regardless of his work.

Having a partner, it is just normal that you will not allow your partner to proceed or engage

in this kind of work, but in his case he refused his wife. According to him, “Ayaw na kong payagan,

fun. Even if she’s not that of a millionaire, she doesn’t allow me. She gives me almost everything.

She even knows that I don’t agree to be taken out. Besides, I’m just here inside. Bar to house, bar

began with a two-emotioned black and white mask illustrating what the community knows and

revealing the things that they are not aware of; starting with the nature of his work and on how he

earns money, including his experiences at work especially on how he handles his customers as he

face different circumstances while at work. Through the life that has chosen to live with, he was

able to take care of his emotions at work especially with the support of the people around him;

that made him feel unmoved by the other people’s opinion towards his work.

DISCUSSION

This section summarizes the findings, states the conclusion and provides answers and

recommendations to the problems raised in the study.

CONCLUSION

Although there is a small but growing literature exploring the experiences and practices of

male prostitutes, there has been very little published scientific research regarding the unheard

stories of a male prostitute. This study aimed to examine the response of a male prostitute on his

work at night and to be able to empathize with the stories. It mainly examined the reaction of the

male prostitute on the nature of his work, financial stability, experiences at work, dealing with

danger at work, and even his emotion at work. In addition to this, the study recognized the

peculiarity of the male prostitute work to the other prostitutes who work for sex to have money.

Unlike the participant, he entertains only to have money. In general, the paper studied into the

extent of the unheard stories of a Male prostitute.

Moreover, the researchers distinguished how the participant reacted on the nature of their

work to others. The researchers found the self-reflection of the male prostitute about the

difference of their work to other regular work, on an article conducted by Blackwell (2007), the

nature of work is changing far quicker than the economic world around us. Just glance around a

modern workplace to see how far our working styles have evolved from just a few years ago. Ask

an executive the seemingly simple question "what is a 'normal' job?" and the probability is that

they will struggle answer.

Thus, the participant also mention that his work is far less more sexual but not clean, he

also mention that his work is just having a normal conversation with people, an article by
25

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

Haslanger (2009), he mentioned that there are at least two different sorts of moral questions one

might ask about prostitution and modeling. One might ask about the moral status of a particular

agent's engaging in modeling or prostitution, and whether one action is morally worse than the

other. Regarding both sorts of questions it seems to me that much more should be considered

beyond whether the practice or the act is an instance of “selling one’s body”, modeling and

prostitution potentially has quite different effects on a society.

Likewise, to the difference of female prostitute to the male prostitute, who plays a lot of

different roles. The participant is positive to mention the difference of the prostitution industry of

female to them, on a study conducted by Sarah (2002), a prostitute assumes a prototype of a

woman, conveying that women are the sole purveyors of sexual services. Yet, men in history

have engaged in the selling of their bodies just as women. Also, women are involved in

prostitution and they are amongst the most victimized group of people in society, particularly in

relation to trafficking and the involvement of children (Matthews, 2014), and Male prostitution is

the practice of men providing sexual services in return for payment. (Savage, 2012)

This nature of work that the participants entering is not an easy job, dealing with the

everyday customers waiting for them to pick them up, focusing on their appearance and dealing

with outcomes that the customer brings is part of their job in everyday basis. In an article

“Prostitution a Difficult Job to Escape”, for many prostitutes, the prospect of escaping the industry

seems impossible or at the very least too dangerous to endure. (NPR ,2009) .

Several studies have attempted to answer the question: What are the conditions or

circumstances that led the respondents to engage in prostitution? The participant mention that

because of the low cost of salary, he was able to engage on this work. Thus, on the study of Kofod

(2012), he stated that “While there’s no doubt that money is the primary reason for the women
26

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

becoming prostitutes, it is very surprising that sexual motivation ranks so highly.” In regards to the

study the participants stated that he engaged in this kind of work because profit is just easy to get.

In addition, Pauw (2016) stated that, People enter the profession for various reasons, the

most common is unemployment or the desire to improve their income. Prostitution can be a

lucrative business but the profit vary enormously. He was able to survey 200 sex workers in 2005

indicated that some earned a minimum of R80 per day, while others earned a daily income of R1

700.

The participants in the study, mention that money in the world of prostitution is easy but

working from it is not easy, hence, he stated that some client tend to give more tips and valuable

things like house and accessories. In a study done by Bungay and Atchison (2016), it is noted that

compensation for sex services is not always monetary, but there are alternative ways of

compensating male sex workers. Beyond the monetary compensation, scholars have attempted to

add other dimensions to the definition such as: support of livelihood necessities (i.e. food, shelter,

etc. and other items of monetary values (i.e. drugs, clothes, cosmetics, luxury goods, overseas

vacation, drugs, etc.). Also, the participant mentioned that he met his partner in the bar; in regards

to this, Bungay and Atchison also said, to distinguish MSW from other forms of sexual relationships

with benefits such as marriage, the dimension of “hired” service or employment is added to the

definition.

To work on an industry like this, the participants mention that appearance is one of the

investments that play a vital role here, to satisfy customers taste. Moreover, a study that supports

the business between a Client and the worker, much of what is known about the clients of MSWs

has been determined from MSWs themselves. From the perspective of Male sex worker’s, studies in
27

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

Australia, Argentina, and the United States have described clients as ranging in age from their 30 s

to their 60 s (Marino et al., 2004).

Interviews with MSWs also indicate that a high proportion of clients already have a primary

relationship, often with women but sometimes with other men as well (Smith & Grov, 2011). MSWs

suggested that many of the men who hired them did so not only for sexual gratification but also for

companionship and emotional support. Even though the large majority of encounters involved

some type of sexual activity, typically oral sex and masturbation (Smith & Seal, 2008), MSWs also

reported that nonsexual activities occupied the time they spent with clients (Smith & Grov, 2011).

Furthermore, there are instances that the participant’s work might put them to risk. As a

result of the frequency of rape in prostitution, prostituted people have the highest HIV rate of any

population studied. One study found an HIV prevalence rate of 93% (Ward and Day 2006). Risks

of prostitution also include domestic violence, physical assault, and psychological sequelae of these

traumatic stressors: post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dissociative disorders, depression,

eating disorders, suicide attempts and successful suicides, and substance abuse. Most people

would not be willing to assume these risks (Dworkin 1997).

However, the response of the participant of this study in his situation was still peculiar in

matter because he took it positively; he ignored the opinions of others towards his work. Hence, he

never consulted to any psychologist about his emotional stability because he thinks he is fine both

physically and emotionally. He does not even think on leaving on this kind of work because of the

“easy money” thinking that he said, but if he was given a chance to leave he would not, despite of

the expectation of the society and opinions of it.

It is important to include the emotional and psychological components involved in the work

of a male prostitute, both scholarly publications and mainstream articles geared to the public. In
28

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

scholarly articles discussing male prostitution, it would be beneficial to the society and religious

sector to be aware of the unheard stories of a male prostitute.

In this study, the result showed that the participant has a positive and optimistic side

despite of the challenges in his work, which made him more confident in doing this work. Although

at first it was hard for him to adjust because of the nature of this work however, the researchers

found out that as he grew and became used to this kind of work he takes a lot of confidence after.

The male participant took his experiences positively. These happenings became his source

of strength in facing and overcoming difficulties at work. It helped him grow into a stronger person

he was in the present. On the negative side, it made him envious of other people who works with

regular work. Together with his family, he did not give up on the challenges he had encountered,

and are still living his life with abundant love and prosperity. His experiences served as his way to

become a stronger and confident person.

The participant goes out with his family despite of his work. His family and friends still

support him, they respect his work, the reaction of the family may vary according to the belief they

have thus, to his partner, The researchers find out that acquiring a partner for serious relationship

can also happen in this kind of setting regardless of his work.

Recommendations

To the Participant

The participant should continue to not engage in sexual activities in his job to prevent STD’s

but it is advisable to consider changing his job because his wife is against to his job and she wants

him to stop going to the bar. Furthermore, there is a lot of opportunity out there for good paying

jobs especially the participant has a college degree.

29

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

To the Partner

The partner of the participant should always continue to support him, despite of his job he

is caring to his partner and he loves his partner. She should always give him strength and

understand his situation because he is only doing that kind of job to support her and give her the

needs to live a better life. She should always treat him with care and give him all especially her

love.

To the Family Members, Friends, Colleagues

The family members, friends and colleagues of the participant should always give him

support and not tease him because of his job. They should understand that he is only doing that

kind of job because he has no job in the first place and he wants to support his family financially.

Thus, this will be a big help and a confidence booster for the participant because he knows that his

colleagues supports him throughout the way.

To the Society

The society must understand that people that are on the sex work does not mean that they

always engage in sexual activities. This perception about sex workers must change because the

society must understand that they only engage in that kind of job because of certain reasons.

Through understanding that kind of work, the people who are part of doing sex work will be more

happy and appreciative because people understand that kind of work.

To the Aspiring Researchers

To the aspiring researchers, this paper should help you in future studies. This will give you

an overview in the world of male prostitution and sex work. The future researchers should also

cover topics and literature that we did not able to find. There are many more opportunities in the
30

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

future and more literatures to find. This paper is very special because the topic is less researched

by other researchers and it is very rare. We hope that you as the future researchers will improve

this topic into a better and developed paper that can be internationally recognized.

The instrument that will be used is unstructured form of interview to gather the needed data. In
this way, the instrument is expected to gather valid responses. The used of unstructured interview premised
on several research assumptions such as a). Avoidance of personal bias, b). Less pressure for immediate
response. In the end it encourages open responses to the topic at hand. We would greatly appreciate it if you
can provide us relevant insights comments and suggestions that will help us capture what we truly intend in
our data gathering.

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

P1- sa ganitong trabaho? Ayon 2012 ako nag-umpisa eh.
R1- ayun nga sir 7 years
P1- ah yung negro ano
R2- babae po ba yon?
P1 parang bakla gusto niya akong ilabas, pinipilit nya kahit magkano. Para bang foreigner siya e.
yon parang gusto nya akong tirahin sa pwet
R1 so yung mga ganon sir.
na to?

years.
ganun.
R1- so ikaw ba sir bakit mo napili?

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

R1- diba sir matagal kana, ano yung mga naging routine mo or lagi mong
P1- before?
R1- araw araw
P1- ala
R2- bago pumasok kuya
P1- ah kapag kakain, tulog, gigising ng hapon gym
R1- gym
R2- araw araw?
namin
R2- sir yung first time mo dito ano ang unang exp. mo? First day mo?
P1- saan
P1- ayan katulad niyan.
R1: Both dancer and model sir uhm dancer and model nasubukan mo na sir?
P1: ah oo
R2: Parang meron bang step yun kuya pag bago ka ano ka muna model muna?
P1: Oo.
R2: So dapat maayos yung katawan?
P1: Syempre ano ka no, syempre titignan muna yung ano mo
R2: Pisikal?
P1: Oo
45

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

R2: So dapat maayos yung mukha syempre may itchura.
R: Sa mga {Coughs} client mo sir ano yung mostly gender nila?
P1:Babae
R: Babae sila sir…
R2: Maraming babae?
Badboy
R2: Yung gusto po nila yung medyo maamo yung mukha
R: Mga gano kakatanda kaya yon?
P1: Mahilig sila mga bata, katulad nung naka pula kanina yung …
R2: Ah yung tahimik?
P1:Yun Tsaka yung pangalawang ininterview nyo yun malalakas sa bakla yon
R2: Sa bakla?
R2: Kuya anong age nung mga kilyente mo?
R2: Yung edad nila?
P1: Ah oo
R: ….so pano mong hinahandle yun sir pano mo…
P1: Wala iniintindi nalang, kasi customer is always right e
R2: yes
Kase minsan pag out, kunwari day off di mo
Di man nag aabot sa ganun talagang away.
R: Panong nagkakatampuhan sir?
P1: Syempre yung, may customer kase na magpapaselos kunwari ikaw yung inuupo dati tas yung
umuupo nang iba.
R: Ahhhm
P1: Parang pabebe ganon.
46

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

R: O ano sir, anong?
Kagabi nandito yon
R2: Pinagselos ka?
P1: Pinagseselos ako akala mo naman magseselos ako
R: Sa mga typical na day sir..
P1: Ano?
R: Ano yung mga or magkano yung kinikita mo sa isang gabi?
P1: Hindi pare parehas, iba iba e.
R2: Pinaka mataas mong kinita, yung pinaka mataas
P1: Ano, kukulang P200,000 ata.
R2: Isang araw?!
P1: Oo, oras lang.
R: Oras lang.
R2: pano? Bakit? Pano nangyari?
P1: Customer ko, sinasabitan akong pera P100,000 ganun
R: Cheke sir cheke?
P1: Hindi pera.
R2: May tanong ako sir ano yung tinatawag nilang big day?
R&R3: Nung Friday kase kuya…
R: Ahh big night.
R: Punong puno kami rito non.
R2: May ganon talaga?
P1: Oo
R2: tuwing biyernes at sabado?
R2: Kase nagpunta kami dito nung biyernes…
P1: Oo.. busy, busy kami
R2: Kaya pinabalik kami dito
P1: Oo, may mga lobo rin sa labas. Busy kami non
R2: So anong nangyayari pag ganon?
P1: Ahh yun ano may mga…
R2: MAs maraming tao?
P1: OO tsaka may mga event kami e may mga production kame.
R2: Di mas marami ang kita kuya?
P1: Oo.
R: Nung ahh sabado tsaka kahapon yun diba, ay Friday sabado?
R: Oo. Dun sa two nights na yon, magkano kinita mo non?
P1: Two nights? Ala, maliit lang kulang ano sampu.

R: compared sa iba.
P1: Jollibee… uutus utusan kapa ng gravy.
R: Oo tama kuya tama
47

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

P1: Diba? At 8 hours kapang nakatayo.
R2: So masasabi mo talaga kuya, na sapat yung kinikita mo?
P1: Ah oo
R: Sapat kuya ahh.
R2: Australia
P1: Pero Filipina Siya.
R2: May anak na kayo?
P1: Ala dalawang beses ko nabuntis yun e kinu,, nakukunan mababa yung matris
R: Up until now po kayo pa? Kayo pa po hannga ngayon?
P1: Oo, ano kami nun e. October 6, 2016. Bali 2 taon maygit na
R: Nung time na yun kuya diba dito nga kayo nagkakilala nung time na yon ahh ano naging
reaksyon niya?
R2: ano nagging reaksyon nila nung nalaman nilang..
48

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

R: Panganay kaba kuya?
R2: Uhmm
Kase ibang dancer dito wala.
Walang ano wala silang ano kinikita kung san san dinadala. Yung iba kumikita pinan dadrugs lang.
yon kuya?
P1: Mapangit pa nga ang trabaho ng mga pang-babae saamin e, nag-o-all the way pa sila, tapos
49

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

Curnel pala yung asawa tapos pag labas nila kasama yung babae di alam nung babae pinasundan
pala sila, ayon binaril.
R2:Tinatawanan kayo
R1:Ano yung na pifeel mo or ano yung nararamdaman mo pag ganun
R1:Malaki talaga yung kita noh.
tumagal ako nagka meron ako, may kotse nako may motor nako dyan kolang din nakuha.
R1:Ngayon kuya tignan mo may gold kang kwintas.
P1:Oo
R1:Gastos moba lahat kuya.
50

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

R2:So yun kuya Salamat.
R2:Salamat.

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

So masasabi mo talaga kuya, na sapat yung
kinikita mo? Ah, oo.

Nung time na yun kuya diba dito nga kayo
may anak siyang isa.
Pero alam nung anak niya bata pa yun e mag
si-six palang.

58

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

kase may customer ako e koreana.

Ayaw? Pero bat bumabalik ka dito? Halos lahat naman binigyan sakin e.

Buti bumabalik ka parin? Hindi alam niya naman na hindi ako

nagpapalabas e. Dito lang loob lang bar-
bahay, bar- bahay. Tsaka ano ako, bantay
sarado ako non.

Seven years kana dito no kuya ah may balak Oo hanggat kaya ko yung ano hanggat kung

business? Bangko lang ng bangko tsaka ano hanggat
bata ipon ng ipon. Kase ibang dancer dito
wala. Walang ano wala silang ano kinikita
kung san-san dinadala. Yung iba kumikita
pinan dadrugs lang.

R: So hindi nawawala yung drugs?

Pero ako since birth
hindi ako nag drugs.

Diba kuya yung iba dahil nahihiya yung Ahhh, hindi ako. Kase nung hindi pa ganyan
59

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

loob, kase pag sasabihing ganito yung
babae saamin e, nag-o-all the way pa sila,

asawa tapos pag labas nila kasama yung
babae di alam nung babae pinasundan pala
sila, ayon binaril. Yan sa may marquee. Sa
may peryahan, yun don.

Kase may naka

kanila?
Parang ngayon lang sila nakakita ng ganun
60

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

bubulungan ganun? naming dito, kasi may sinama kami dito
tambay-tambay lang taga samin din pero
ngayon tignan mo gumanda buhay nila,
ngayon tuwang tuwa magulang nila samin,
hindi yung bat mo pinasok yung anak naming
sa ganyan, hindi, napagawa pa yung bahay
nila edi tuwang tuwa pa nanay nya diba, kami
kase yung nararanasan naming gusto naming
ibahagi sa mga tambay samin, parang iniisip
nila hindi ganun ganun trabaho naming.
Malaki talaga yung kita noh.
tumagal ako nagka meron ako, may kotse
Ngayon kuya tignan mo may gold kang nako may motor nako dyan kolang din
kwintas. nakuha.
Kasama ba yon sa mga pundar mo? Oo
Ay ano kuya kasi kanina kasama, I mean eh.
kasama yung Religion kapag nag sisimba ka
hindi kaba nakakaramdam ng Guilt, ganun? Hindi syempre kahit dumaan ako minsan sa
simbahan hindi man ako bumababa ng motor
nandun ako parang, sabi ko patawarin nyo ko
kase syempre trabaho namin parang kung
sino-sino ganun kase kahit saan naming
lalakeng sumasayaw karamihan sakanila yung
mga bonding bonding lang.
61

DOMINICAN COLLEGE OF TARLAC

malibang.
