 State Project Title Design and Development of 3D Solar Cells
 State Project Aim / Objective / Purpose Description: Solar energy is the most
promising renewable energy source that can be harnessed for electricity
generation in Singapore. As there is an average annual solar irradiance of 1,580
kWh/m2/year and about 50 percent more solar radiation than temperate
countries, solar photovoltaic (PV) generation therefore has the greatest potential
for deployment in Singapore, and its application has been greatly accelerated in
the recent years.
One of the main challenges encountered in widely deploying solar panels in
Singapore is the available area for the installation, which is constrained by the
Singapore’s small physical size (716.1 km2), high population density and land
scarcity. In this project, the student will study the design and implementation of
three-dimensional solar cells that can potentially increase the amount of energy
harvested per unit area.  Besides, it can increase the number of peak power
generation hours and mitigate the effects of seasonal, latitude and weather
variations of solar energy generation compared to a flat panel design.

Intern

 For instance, an example of this would be when I was assigned my first task
of planning and designing the lightings for the rooms in a building. I was advised
by my supervisor to take into consideration the appropriate power wattage per
square metre to use which at that point of time was 7W/m^2.

 Besides being mainly tasked with the JTC3 CleanTech Building Project, I was
also assigned other tasks related to other major projects that AECOM was in
charge of as well after week 10.
 These include the electrical design of the Clementi & Seragoon Interchange
Concourse as well as the Sembawang Sports & Community Hub project among
other tasks at hand.

 Accounting of distribution boards (DBs) such as electrical boards and other

switchboards etc.
 Locating the positions of those distribution boards (DBs) on architectural
drawings
 Measured the dimensions of said distribution boards in terms of l, b & h

 Designing the lighting and electrical installation of the Clementi Bus

Interchange concourse
 Came up with the layout of the lighting plan as well as the lux report for the
exact lux and wattage power level required for the rooms

 Produced the layout plan for the locations of the luminaires

 Calculated the lux levels and the wattage per square metre for the individual
rooms in the hub

 Designed the lighting and electrical installation for the rooms in SSCH by
deciding which luminaires to use and how much the lux and power levels should
be
 Calculated and came up with the single sheet output for the relevant rooms in
SSCH

 Mark-up and accounted for all the components in the rooms of SSCH such as
the luminaires, speakers, DBs etc.
 Calculated the difference in quantity of what is expected and what is actually
there

 Learnt the procedure needed to properly purchase plant maps through the
correct means and channel
 Learnt the importance of plant maps and the role they play in the process of
constructing a building or structure

 The latest project I worked on during my time as an intern at AECOM

 Mark-up and draft out the architectural drawings using AutoCAD with all the
appropriate components (luminaires, speakers, DBs etc)

 Visited the sites where the projects AECOM was in charge of were carried out
 Witness first-hand the kind of work that goes behind the scenes of
constructing a building

 These last 10 weeks of internship has taught me more about the engineering
consultancy industry that simply just the typical office job scope (lighting design,
mark-up etc)
 I learnt about the AutoCAD drafting that the drafters and architects are in
charge of as well as took a look at the actual work BTS through site visits
To assist the design engineer to carry out electrical engineering services,
design and calculation for LV power distribution, lighting system, electrical earthing
system for building
engineering projects (or infra-structure project such as railway station, depot and the
supporting facility)
The design will be carried out in Building Information Management system (BIM).
(1432)
Design and BIM training will be provided

To design lightings to comply with the Code of Practice and the Singapore Standard 530, 531 &
the Green Mark Platinum standard
To conduct manual lighting calculations based on the Lumen method
To conduct the lighting design simulation for the selected light fittings

Design
Planning & Control
Production / Operations / Site Supervision
Quality Assurance
Marketing / Sales

I would like to have an insight of how electrical engineers design and calculate for low voltage
power
distribution, lighting system, electrical earthing system for building engineering project. Learn new
design
software to facilitate with the project. Understand the Singapore Code of Practice and learn how to
apply
it during the design process. Learn about the Lumen method, which in its simplest form is merely
the total
number of lumens available in a room divided by the area of said room, and understand as well as
apply the formula that lighting planning software applications (DIALux) uses to calculate the light
level in
a room that involves a series of calculations that uses horizontal illuminance criteria to establish a
uniform luminaire layout in a space. I would also like to learn how to estimate and save costs by
using the
minimum number of luminaires required as well as find out how to layout the spacing of luminaires
in a
computer lighting calculation program. Another thing that I could learn from this internship is the
Lighting
Power Density (LPD) which technically represents the load of any lighting equipment in any defined
area,
or the watts per square foot of the lighting equipment or in some cases, the maximum allowable
lighting
density permitted by the code where it is expressed in watts per square foot for a given space or
area.

Any questions?
It is important to ask questions to learn about the company and the job's challenges. The best
questions will come because of listening to the questions the interviewer asks you. Remember, a
lack of curiosity about the position is the quickest way to tell an interviewer that you are not really
interested. Ask questions about your interviewer's experience at company, how the position relates
to other employees, corporate culture, opportunities for personal! professional growth, challenges
faced by the organization or industry, successes and challenges for those previously in the role, your
profile's overlap with the role, and next steps. For example, …
