Problem 1
Calculate Vo and Io in the circuit,
For Vo
5 Ohm and 20 Ohm are in parallel connection so resulting resistance is
5*20/(5+20) = 4 Ohm
Same for 70 Ohm and 30 Ohm :- 70*30/ (70+30) = 21 Ohm
For Vo = Vs (4/Rt) =200 (4/ 4+21) = 200 (4/25) = 32 V
Vo = 32 V
For Io
Appling node analysis
( (Vo-Vs) /70 ) + ( Vo/20 )+ Io =0
( (32-200) / 70 ) + ( 32/20) + Io = 0
-2.4 + 1.6 + Io = Io – 0.8
Io = 0.8 A
Problem 2
Find the equivalent resistance at terminals a-b of each circuit in Figures below
20× 30 600
(a) Parallel resistors 20 ohm and 30 ohm: 20 ± 30 = 50 =12 ohms
40 ×10
Three parallel resistors 10, 40 and 12 ohms: 40+10 =8 ohm
12× 8
=4.8 ohms
12+8
Series resistors 4.8, 5 and 50 ohms: 4.8+ 5+50=59.8 ohms=Req
Total resistance = 59.8 ohm
(b) Series resistors 30 ohm and 12 ohm: 30+12=42 ohms
Series resistors 25, 10 and 60 ohms: 25+10+60=95 ohms
42 ×20
Parallel resistors 42, 20 and 95 ohms: 42+ 20 =13.54 ohms
13.54 ×95
=11.85 ohms
13.54+ 95
Series resistors 5, 11.85 and 15 ohms: 5+11.85+15=31.85 ohms=Req
Total resistance = 31.85 ohm
Problem 3
The 60 W light bulb is rated at 120 volts. Calculate Vs to make the light bulb
operate at the rated conditions.
Bulb and 80 Ohm are in parallel so they have same voltage of 120 v,
And resistance of bulb is Rb = v2/P
=120*120/60 = 240 Ohm
Rb = 240 Ohm
And I = P/V
Ib = 60/120 = 0.5 A
And at 80 ohm I = V/R = 120/80= 1.5 A
Thus, I at 80 Ohm is 1.5 A
hence I1 through 40 Ohm is 2 A
V at 40 Ohm = 40 (2) = 80 V
Vs = 80 +120= 200 V
