TECHNICAL NOTE

Date 06-2013 EN B0159/5

It must not be communicated to third parties without written authorization from RENAULT TRUCKS.

Supersedes & replaces MAGNUM DXi / PREMIUM DXi

B0159/4 dated 05/2010 KERAX DXi – MIDLUM DXi

ENGINE
Concerns: Workshop – Reception – Stores

I – SUBJECT: DEALING WITH "ENGINE PERFORMANCE" COMPLAINTS

A complaint is always lodged in relation to a reference vehicle or a previous situation. It can
only be submitted if the vehicles are similar (use, power rating, range, generation, equipment,
etc.).

Before inspection, check that the vehicle drive line is suited to the type of use.

II – PRELIMINARY INSPECTIONS

Log the checks carried out in Form F0019.

II – 1. With the diagnostic tool

Menu "1 - Service and maintenance":
− Ensure the absence of faults in the ECUs.
Operation "1700–21–03–03 Fault codes".
− Check the compliance of the configuration of the EMS.
Operation "1700–08–03–03 Vehicle information, test".

− Check that the injector codes configured in ECU (2) are identical to those marked on
injector connectors (3) (DXi 11/12/13 only).
Operation "1700–22–02–06 Configuration, Programming". Select engine (1).

Menu "2 – Engine, engine mounting and equipment".

− Check the electrical status of the accelerator pedal (0 to 100%).
Operation "2179–08–03 – 01 Accelerator pedal, test".
− Check the coherence of the turbocharger pressure value and the values of other sensors (air
temperature, coolant temperature, etc.)
Operation "2846–08–03–02. Sensor value, inspection".
− Carry out three consecutive cylinder compression tests.
Operation "2103–08–03–02 Compression in the cylinders, tests"
− Carry out three consecutive cylinder balancing tests.
Operation "2387–08–03–01 Cylinder balancing, test".

II – 2. On the vehicle
− Check the intake circuit: air filter, crushed or pinched duct, air leaks from hoses, tightness of
clamps, boost air radiator, leaks, clogging.
− Check the exhaust system: catalytic converter (modification, folds, crushing, clogging,
catalytic converter brick dislodged, etc.).
− Check the fuel circuit: visual inspection for leaks, seeping, crushed or pinched pipes, etc.

II – 3. On the engine
− Check the pre-stressing adjustment of the pump injectors (ignition + ¾ turn) (DXi 11/12/13
only).
− Check the adjustment of the valve clearances.
− Check the turbocharger play, the state of the blades, check for any presence of oil.

− Check the turbo "Wastegate" control system:
• Condition and connection of the air hoses connected to the control solenoid valve.
• Movement of the control arm when the solenoid valve is operated through
operation "2250–08–03–01 Actuator for by-pass valve, test".
• Movement of the control arm when the "Wastegate" is pressurised directly (see
Workshop Repair Manual: Wastegate valve/Check).
− Check the operation of the retarder on the exhaust:
• Absence of any seizure.
• Position of the flap (see Workshop Repair Manual:
Engine/Characteristics/Dimensions and tolerances/Exhaust pressure regulator).

III – CHECKING THE PRESSURE OF THE DIESEL FUEL SUPPLY

Log the checks carried out in the Form.

For DXi 5.7: F0005
For DXi 11, 12, 13: F0006

Before taking the measurement, ensure that:

• The fuel tank’s vent is not blocked,
• The suction inlet on the gauge is not blocked,
• Fuel filters are not clogged up,
• The fuel circuit hoses are not pinched, folded or crushed. There are no leaks present (downstream
of the supply pump) or air intake (upstream of the supply pump),
• All of the connections have been fitted and tightened correctly,
• The diesel fuel is of good quality.

For more information on diesel fuel circuit diagnostics, refer to the following Technical Notes:
For DXi 5 and 7: G0025
For DXi 11, 12, 13: B0224

IV – CHECK TURBOCHARGING AND EXHAUST PRESSURES

IV – 1. Test conditions
For the measurement to be representative, the vehicle should be under full load on an inclining false
flat. Select the tallest gear that allows an engine performance curve to be obtained with the engine
under full load going from 700 rpm to the highest possible engine speed (1900 rpm for DXi 11, 12
and 13, 2300 rpm for DXi 5 and 7).

Biofuels reduce engine performance (see Technical Note Q0011).

IV – 2. Readings
− Connect the diagnostic tool to the vehicle:
Menu "2 – Engine, engine mounting and
equipment".
Operation "2500–08–03–03 test drive, response".
4
− Click on arrow (4) to start the operation.

− Select the tolerance range corresponding to the

vehicle (cylinder capacity and power (5)).
− Click on arrow (6).
5
The test will start automatically when the following 6
conditions have all been met:
• Accelerator pedal at 100%,
• Maximum engine loading.
The "performance" curve is traced directly within the
tolerance range.

Measure the pressure at the exhaust (P4)when taking the performance reading:
• All engines except DXi 13 Euro 5/EEV, equip the vehicle in accordance with Technical
Note B0262.
• For DXi 13 Euro 5/EEV, use operation "2846–08–03–02 Sensor value, check".

V – CONCLUSIONS
If the turbocharging pressure curve is positioned within the tolerance range, the engine is not
defective. The lack of performance felt may be due to a drive line that is poorly-suited to the type of
vehicle use.
If the values do not fall within these ranges, the engine is faulty.
Search for the cause according to the results of the previous tests.
If you contact your Techline (or your technical correspondent), provide them with the following:
• The completed F0019 form,
• The completed F0005 (DXi 5/7) or F0006 (DXi 11/12/13) form,
• The Jobcard,
• An Infomax report,
• A screen shot of the VCADs turbocharging pressure curve (§ IV- 2).
