Check Condition of Tools and
5 Equipment
This lesson contains information and suggested learning activities in Electrical Installation
and Maintenance particularly in checking the condition of common tools and equipment used
in electrical works.
Welcome to the world of Electrical Installation and Maintenance! In this lesson, you are
guided in checking the condition of tools and equipment commonly used in electrical works.
After knowing the fundamentals in electrical installation and maintenance regarding with the
tools and equipment, the next thing you need to have is the ability to check the condition of
the commonly used tools and equipment in electrical works to provide the necessary
maintenance to prolong its top condition to produce quality works according to job
specifications.
You are then required to read, understand and internalize how to check the condition of the
tools and equipment commonly used in electrical works so that at the end of the lesson, you
may able to perform the different activities included in this module.

Checking the condition of tools and equipment is an essential procedure conducted by
electrical practitioners because it prevents possible accidents by early detection of non-
functioning and malfunctioning tools and equipment, once identified, non-functioning tools
and equipment are separated to be repaired or disposed if it is beyond repair.
The following serves as a guide that can be followed in checking the condition of tools and
equipment, it is usually carried out before using any tools or equipment and during inventory
and inspection of tools and equipment.
1. Classify of Tools and Equipment
Generally, a Tool is any device that can be used to produce something or accomplish a task
which is not consumed in the process of production, it is considered as an extension of the
hand which increases speed, power, and accuracy, on the other hand, equipment refers to
any machine powered by additional power source, or a set of implements commonly used to
achieve a particular objective. In electrical installation and maintenance, tools and equipment
may be classified into;
b) Power tools are tools which uses additional power source such as electricity (for
electrical power tools), oil/liquid (for hydraulic power tools), or air pressure (for
pneumatic power tools). The commonly used power tools in electrical works are the
following:
Portable electric drill – which is used to bore holes and has an electric
motor connected to a chuck with jaws that holds the drill bit.
Angle grinder – a power tool with an abrasive disc or cutting disc attachment
commonly used in grinding or cutting materials.
6
Heat gun – commonly used in electrical works for bending PVC conduits to
its desired angle or shape.
o Hard hats – used to protect the head from falling objects or debris.
o Safety Goggles – used to protect the eyes from flying objects or materials
The main goal in checking tools and equipment is to identify functional from
non-functional tools and equipment, it is important so that non-functional tools
and equipment can be properly tagged or labelled and removed from the
functional tools and equipment to prevent it from being used and avoid
potential harm or damage to people or property. Functional tools and
equipment are those that are in good condition and can perform its regular
functions while Non-functional tools and equipment are those that cannot
perform its regular function because of impaired or damaged parts. To identify
non-functional tools and equipment, the following options may be used:
7
b) Functionality – by safely testing the equipment, an expert can detect if a tool or
equipment has a problem, for example, a slight change in vibration or extra noise
could mean that problem starts to develop.
c) Performance – when there is something wrong with the performance of either hand
tools or equipment and it does not deliver its expected output, immediate repair and
maintenance is necessary.
d) Power supply – for power tools, failure to meet the required power supply for its
operation may cause malfunction and may damage the tools or equipment.
e) Expert advice – this involves seeking expert advice from the technical person who
has the knowledge and skills about the particular technology used in a tool or
equipment.
Functional tools shall be returned to the tool cabinet or place where it is stored as per
operating procedures. The non-functional tools and equipment must be segregated between
serviceable which are bound for repair and unserviceable that are bound for condemnation
or disposal, appropriate report should also be prepared. The following are examples of non-
functional tools and equipment.
8
Safety Alert: Do not attempt use damaged tools, equipment and PPEs to avoid accidents, for
electrical tools, make sure to unplug the equipment before checking it to avoid electric shock.
Label tools and equipment which are serviceable so that the person in-charge of the repair
will easily identify the problem and provide its appropriate repair needed. For unserviceable
tools and equipment, its label should indicate its condition and the reason why it is beyond
repair and condemnable. Provided below is a sample of a label or tag for non-functional
tools and equipment subject for repair with its basic content or information.
9
3. Functional tools and equipment are those which cannot perform its regular
function because of impaired or damaged parts.
4. Labeling non-functional tools and equipment means indicating the necessary
details to know the specific identification and problem of it.
5. Unserviceable tools may still be used if proper care was observed.
Directions: Put a checkmark in the “YES” for the concepts that you fully understand and a
checkmark on the “NOT YET” column if otherwise, you may go back to the topics you do not
fully understand.
