03 Task Performance 1 - ARG

1) The substitutions u=e^x and dv=x dx are inappropriate for integrating x*e^x dx because it does not follow the proper order of the LIATE method. The correct substitutions are u=x and dv=e^x dx. 2) Using integration by parts, the integral of x*sin(x) dx is equal to -x*cos(x) + sin(x) + C. 3) Using a u-substitution of u=cos(x), the integral of sin(x) dx is equal to -1/5*cos(5x) + 2/3*cos(3x) - cos(x) + C.

BSCpE 201 Integral Calculus

1. Suppose we apply the formula, ∫ udv=uv−∫ vdu to ∫ x e x dx. Explain why the
substitutions below are inappropriate.

Let u=e x and dv =x dx .

2. Evaluate ∫ x sin x dx using integration by parts.
3. Evaluate ∫ sin x dx .

Answers:

1. Suppose that ∫ udv=uv−∫ vdu , where ∫ udv= x e dx .

Let u=e x and dv =x, then du=e x dx and v= x
2
1 2 x 1 2 x
∴∫ x e dx= x e −∫ x e dx
x

Hence, u=e and dv =x is a wrong choice because it didn’t follow the general rule of
x

integration by parts which is the LIATE. Using LIATE (Logarithmic, Inverse

Trigonometric, Algebraic, Trigonometric, Exponential) is the proper way to find u by
decreasing order of property.

It should be u=x and dv =e x dx because x is an algebraic which is third of LIATE and

e dx is the last property of LIATE. Then, du=dx and v=e . Applying ∫ udv=uv−∫ vdu ,
x x

where ∫ udv= x e dx , then

∫ x e x dx=x e x−∫ e x dx
∴=x e x −e x +C
2. ∫ x sin x dx
 u=x du=dx
 dv =sin x dx v=−cos x
∫ udv=uv−∫ vdu
∫ x sin x dx=− x cos x−∫−cos x dx
¿−x cos x−−∫ cos x dx
¿−x cos x +∫ cos x dx
∴=−x cos x +sin x+C
3. ∫ sin 5 x dx
∫ sin 4 x sin x dx
∫ ( sin2 x ) sin x dx

∫ ( 1−cos 2 x ) sin x dx
