ADDING LIKE SIGNS
In adding like signs, just add the
number and copy the signs.
Examples:
1) 13 2) -14

ADDING UNLIKE SIGNS
In adding unlike signs, subtract the
number and copy the signs of the
greater number.
Examples:
1) 25 2) -38

SUBTRACTING LIKE/UNLIKE SIGNS

In subtracting signed numbers, change


first the sign of the subtrahend and
proceed to the process of addition.
Examples:
1) -54 2) -36
- -22 - 74

MULTIPLYING LIKE SIGNS

In multiplying like signs, just multiply


the numbers and the sign is positive
Examples:
1) 10 2) -15
x 12 x -5

DIVIDING LIKE SIGNS
In dividing like signs, just divide
the number and the sign is
positive.
Examples:
1) 25 2) -120
÷ 5 ÷ -20

MULTIPLYING UNLIKE SIGNS
In multiplying unlike signs, just
multiply the numbers and the sign
is negative.
Examples:
1) 10 2) -15
x -12 x 5

DIVIDING UNLIKE SIGNS
In dividing unlike signs, just
divide the number and the sign is
negative.
Examples:
1) 25 2) 120
÷ -5 x -20

Removing
Symbols for
Groupings
Parentheses ( ), brackets [ ], and
braces { } are different grouping
symbols used in expressions. To
evaluate and expression with
different grouping symbols, perform
the operation in the innermost set of
grouping symbol first. Then evaluate
the expression from the inside out.
Example:
1) 5 [(11-3) – (13 – 9)]
Step 1: Perform the operations in the
parentheses first.
Step 2: Next, perform the operations in the
bracket.
Step 3: Then multiply.
