INTRODUCTION
>Preston bus station is the central bus station in the city of Preston in
Lancashire, England.
>It is surrounded by concrete aprons and is located in an island
structure, with a size and operation similar to an airport, placed in the
center of a rural city in the north of England, with 140,000 inhabitants,
and priority of land access for buses.
>It was built by Ove Arup and Partners in the Brutalist architectural
style between 1968 and 1969 and later refurbished by John Puttick
Associates.
>It is an important example of Brutalist architecture
>It represents an important stage in the revolution of integrated
architectural and design practice in post-war England

IMMEDIATE CONTEXT >To the north and east of the site lie a mixture of a hotel, office
blocks and a large retail outlet, whilst to the west there are a
variety of commercial offers
>At the southern end of the site lies the taxi rank, a curved
structure that mimics the architectural curved edges to the car
park decks on the main building.
To the west of the public space,
a formal tree-lined pedestrian
boulevard connects the Lord
Street shared space to Guild
Hall, the St John’s Centre
and beyond.

HISTORY
>It was designed to recreate the sense of the monumen-
tal within the scene of the British city and as a center of
traffic for the region.
>At the time of its construction, architect Keith Ingham
said that his goal was to offer ordinary people some of
the luxury that air travel offered.
>The ground floor of the building is very much open plan
with continuous vistas along the length of the building

PARKING STRATEGY
The design reorients the building, prioritising pedestrians over vehicles. At
an urban scale, the bus apron is now consolidated to the east creating a
major public space to the west connected to the city centre.
