ECG Workshop for Medical Students

The objectives of the ECG Small Group Workshop are to define the primary survey, identify ECG components such as leads and rhythms, and determine key findings including rates, rhythms, ST segments, T waves, and STEMI locations. Students will practice identifying rhythms, completing primary surveys, and interpreting ECGs for conditions like STEMI and NSTEMI. The workshop aims to teach students to analyze ECGs and recognize important clinical findings.

ECG Small Group Workshop

Student Objectives

At the conclusion of the ECG Small Group Workshop, you should be able to:

1. Define Primary Survey and list its elements.

2. On a standard 12 lead ECG, identify limb leads, chest leads, and the rhythm strip.
3. Explain how leads identify the location of myocardial ischemia and STEMI on ECG.
4. List the four elements of the ECG “Primary Survey” discussed in lecture.
a. Rate
b. Rhythm
c. ST segments: depressed / elevated
d. T waves
5. Determine rate on ECG.
6. Determine rhythm on ECG, i.e., whether supraventricular (narrow QRS) or ventricular (wide
QRS).
7. Using rhythm strips, identify the following TYPES of supraventricular and ventricular rhythms:
a. Normal sinus rhythm
b. Sinus tachycardia
c. Sinus bradycardia
d. PSVT
e. Atrial flutter
f. Atrial fibrillation
g. Junctional rhythm
h. Ventricular tachycardia
i. Ventricular fibrillation
j. Torsade de Pointes
k. Asystole
8. Identify ST segment depression on ECG and explain its significance
9. Identify ST segment elevation on ECG and explain its significance.
10. Identify T wave changes and their significance.
11. On a standard 12 lead ECG, identify the following STEMIs:
a. Posterior wall STEMI
b. Anterior wall STEMI
c. Lateral wall STEMI
d. Inferior wall STEMI

1
1. On this ECG, identify:
a. Limb leads
b. Chest leads
c. Rhythm strip

2. What is the heart rate on the following rhythm strips:

A.

100

B.

2
50-55

C.

163- 100

D.

atrial rate 300, v rate150. 2:1 block

3. Identify the following ECG rhythms. First identify the rhythm as either supraventricular or
ventricular; second, identify the specific type of supraventricular or ventricular rhythm:

A. Ventricular or supraventricular
Type: supraventricular 75 normal sinus ryth

B. Ventricular or supraventricular
Type: ventricular 150 v-tach

3
C. Ventricular or supraventricular
Type: suprav, no P wave, junctional

D. Ventricular or supraventricular
Type: supra, a fluttuer 2:1 block SA not conducting

E. Ventricular or supraventricular
Type: supra, sinus tachy,

F. Ventricular or supraventricular

Type: sinus bardy, supra

G. Ventricular or supraventricular

Type: v-fib, ventricular

H. Ventricular or supraventricular
Type: Know this rhythm and potential complications.
Atrial fib, supraven

I. Ventricular or supraventricular
Type:, supraven a run PSVT

vvvv

J. Ventricular or supraventricular
Type: ventricular torsaqu

5
K. Ventricular or supraventricular
Type: tachy w/ pre-ventricular ending is asystole

4. On the following ECGs, complete a primary survey that includes

a. Rate
