Case Study 1&2

An unnamed woman found a hidden camera installed by an Airbnb "superhost" in the bedroom of a property she rented. Installing hidden cameras in private areas like bedrooms is against Airbnb's rules and an invasion of privacy. The woman reported the camera to authorities, who took action. While technology can benefit lives, it is how people use technologies that determines whether its effects are good or bad.

Case Study 1

An Airbnb “superhost” has been caught red handed for installing hidden

cameras in his guest’s bedroom. An unnamed woman book a room from this

“superhost” which happens to work in information security found an unusual

light coming from the Wi-Fi router and after investigating it turns out to be a

hidden camera, she then reported it to the authority and quickly action has

been taken. Hidden cameras in inappropriate places can be an invasion of

privacy and can be considered as a prosecutable and punishable felony.

According to Airbnb’s rules, cameras are allowed in some places like outdoors

and in the living room, but never in bathrooms and anywhere the guest decides

to sleep to, including bedrooms. It can also affect the trust of guests in booking

rooms. AirBnb added another layer of disclosure early in 2018, it states that if

the host indicate they need cameras anywhere in their property, guests receive a

pop-up informing them that a camera were installed, where it is located, and

where it is pointing to. To book the property, the guest must strictly click

“agree”, indicating that they are aware of the camera and consent to being

filmed. As we know, technology is a double edged sword, it can be beneficial

and it can also be a disaster. Technological advancements have both improved

the quality of life substantially and also is brought about many ill effects too.

But for me, technological advancement has nothing to do with the “good” or

“bad” standards. It is the person using the technology which is the thing.
Case Study 2

Massive information or confidential data including names, addresses, emails

and phone numbers has been leaked due to hackers. In exchange, the hackers

who made this trespass demands payment in return of the stolen informations.

Leakage can have a big impact in the business industry, it can lead to revenue

loss, reputational damage, operational disruption, and regulatory sanction, just

to name a few. To prevent this type of situation from ever happening, a

business should  create a culture of information security, implement regular

information security training and education, implement a malicious employee

mitigation strategy, and implement a high-security document shredding service.

The advancement of technology is evidence of mankind’s continuing search to

make a better world. But in the process, it is inevitable that sometimes using

technological advancements can be abused and utilized on the wrong doings.

But still with the situation, technology can be very helpful in our daily life.

Again as I mentioned earlier, It’s just a tool, It’s all in how we use it.
