Summary of the story
The film Moana is all about an adventurous teenager sails out on a daring mission to
save her people. During her journey, Moana meets the once-mighty demigod Maui, who
guides her in her quest to become a master way-finder. Together they sail across the
open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and
impossible odds. Along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and
discovers the one thing she always sought: her own identity.
Analysis of the movie
In the beginning of the story, moana’s grandma tell her a story about maui’s stealing the
heart of te fiti. Moana comes of age and goes to the water with her boat and the heart
that her granda gives to her. Moana sail the ocean to find maui and return the heart.
Later on, she met maui. Maui said he need to find his hook so moana and maui go to
find the hook and they end up getting the hook and meet a griant crab named Tamatoa,
who they get back Maui’s hook. The climas of the film is when Maui and Moana need to
fight Te ka.
This movie connects to the course themes in a multitude of ways including, defining the
world’s region based on their geography and cultural landscapes. Moana does this
extremely well and in regard to the geography, all of the animals such as Pigs, chicken,
and exotic shorebirds are all very real parts of ancient Polynesian life. The structure of
the village and how their community operates is quite a communalist, meaning that the
local inhabitants of Motunui and Polynesia as a whole share their goods with all
members of the society. In regards to Humans effect on the environment, Moana
illustrates a world were Te Fiti was stolen from and taken advantage of. This parallels in
the real world to the overuse of natural resources like fish and food on the island. This
shows that at the end of the movie, when Moana returns the “heart”, effectively fixing
the humans relationship with nature; this shows that Polynesians as a whole have a
deep connection to not only the ocean but nature as a whole. I greatly enjoyed all
aspects of this movie and it can definitely be used as a great educational tool for
children if they need an introduction to Polynesian culture. Polynesian mythology is an
oral history, and was never documented in artwork; so, to make the film's exposition
more visual, the team created a synthetic style of tapa—a cloth-like material most
often made by pounding the bark of the paper mulberry tree until it has the proper
consistency. For the music entitled How far I’ll go, I think it’s all about a person who
wants to prove themselves and show everyone just how far they'll go. It's about someone
who tries their hardest to be the person everyone wants them to be but they just want to
be themselves.
Opinion
In my opinion Moana is one of the best films I’ve ever watch. Moana is truly a role model
for us, for being a brave person a in every challenge she encountered. But each of these
three themes played important roles in the overall storyline. We see Special Birth through
Moana as she was what the people needed. We see Nature Spirituality through the Island
as the Island was no longer able to give the people what they needed until Moana was
able to restore it. Lastly, we have reincarnation. This was presented through Moana's
grandmother, after she had passed away, Moana later had an encountering with a
stingray which is the new form of her Grandmother. All three Religious themes connect
through the film, they all played a role in furthering the life of the Island.
Conclusion
The filmmaker’s success in his/her purpose because the story really tells a clear
message like, the devotion of moana to her people, the love of her family and her desire
to forge her own path. Moana loves her island, and was ready to give up her dreams of
sailing the ocean to serve as chief over her people. You can see in the film the traits of
a good people with a good heart and intention.
