WEEK 1

Learning Task 1:
Evaluate the following polynomials in your answer sheet.

1. f(x) = 3x⁶ + 2x² - 7x + 15 ; x = 1

f(1) = 3(1)⁶ + 2(1)² - 7(1) +15

= 3(1) + 2(1)² - 7(1) +15
= 3 + 2 (1)² - 7(1) + 15
= 3 + (2) (1) - 7(1) + 15
= 3 + 2 - 7(1) + 15
= 5 - 7(1) + 15
= 5 - 7 + 15
= -2 + 15
= 13

2. f(x) = x⁴ - 4x + 10 ; x = 4

f(4) = 4⁴ - 4(4) + 10
= 256 - 4(4) + 10
= 256 - 16 + 10
= 240 + 10
= 250

3. f(x) = 5x⁶ + 3x³ - 2x² - 6 ; x = -2

f(-2) = 5(-2)⁶ + 3(-2)³ -2(-2)² - 6

= 5(64) + 3(-2)³ -2(-2)² - 6
= 320 + 3(-2)³ -2(-2)² - 6
= 320 + -24 -2 -2(-2)² - 6
= 296 - 2(-2)² - 6
= 296 - 2(4) - 6
= 296 - 8 - 6
= 288 - 6
= 282

4. f(x) = -x⁴ + 5x³ ; x = -3

f(-3)= (-3)⁴ + 5(-3)³

= 81 = 5 (-3)³
= 81 = 5 (-27)
= 81 + -135
= -54

5. f(x) = -x³ - 8x² - 9x + 12 ; x = 7

f(7) = 7² - 8(7)² - 9(7) + 12

= 49 - 8(7)² - 9(7) + 12
= 49 - 8(49) -9(7) + 12
= -343 -9(7) + 12
= -343 -63 + 12
= -406 + 12
= -394
