Barangay Afga was established in 1946 after World War II. It gets its name from the American Filipino Guerillas Association (AFGA) that occupied the area during the war. The barangay has a total land area of 1,954 hectares across 16 puroks. As of 2018, it has a population of 3,532 people across 784 households, with a population density of 1.81 people per hectare. The barangay proposes increases in areas zoned for residential, agricultural, and institutional uses to accommodate expected population growth over the next 5 years.

Barangay Profile

A. Historical Background

Barangay Afga was declared into a barrio on October 25, 1946 after the World War II.
Before, Afga as explained and remembered by a certain “Aydaw Andohayan”, a native of his
barangay was a camp, a hideout of the guerrillas and the American Soldiers where they rested
and stayed safe for the rest of their occupation.

The name “Barangay Afga” as proclaimed by the first group of the people residing in the
area, originated from an abbreviation of “The American Filipino Guerillas Association (AFGA)”
after the liberation period of Second World War in 1940’s (Source: BDP 2003-2007)

B. BARANGAY PROFILE:

1.1. Situational Analysis
1.1.1. Physical Characteristics & Land Use
1.1.1.1 Geographical Location

Barangay Afga is twenty – one (21) kilometers from Butuan City and approximately 8.0
kilometers from Poblacion. Bounded by barangay Tabontabon at northern side, barangay El Rio
at the south side; barangay sta. Maria in the east and barangay Sumili at the west.

1.1.1.2 Accessibility

This barangay can be reached by all means of transportation all year round because it links the
Maharlika highway. However some hinter puroks are not accessible during rainy season.

1.1.1.3 Total Land Area

Compose if fourteen (16) puroks with a total land area of 1,954 hectares base on cadastral survey.

1.1.1.4 Weather/Climatic Condition

All year round the barangay experiences the same weather and climate pattern with the whole
province. Summer occur in the month of March to June until September, rainy season begin in
the month of October to February.

1.1.1.5 Slope, Topographic & Elevation

Rolling to moderate steep accumulated about 40% of the total land area, steep category about
25% level to nearly level is 30% and very steep is only 5% of the total land area. A topographic
map shows that this barangay is located within the 0-500 meters above sea level elevation.

1.1.1.6 Soil Characteristic

Base on soil map of the municipality the whole barangay classified as camansa clay loam.
1.1.1.7 Land Limitation – Flood Prone & Erosion Potential Areas

There is no flood prone and erosion potential areas within the barangay. However there is
occurrence of overuse soil within the area, that need fertilizer to boost crop production.

1.1.1.8 Suitability of Land Use

The whole area is suitable for pasture and plantation, based on suitability map.

EXISTING AND PROPOSED GENERAL LAND USE

1. Built –up Areas

From 7.99 hectares to 14.49 hectares it increases by almost 50% to cater the needs for residential,
commercial and institutional purpose as necessary for urbanizing barangay.

2. Agriculture

Existing area devoted for agriculture is 611 hectares it is propose to be 1,000 hectares or 389
hectares are added to compensate food requirement for the populace within the next five (5)
years.

3. Forest

Production forest is 531.0 hectares present figure and its projected area is 35 hectares for
watershed and old growth forest, which serve as watershed purposes also for Sibagat River.

4. Brush/Grassland

Base on existing land use brush/grassland is the dominant vegetative cover within the barangay. It
comprises approximately 951 hectares.

It is propose that some areas are allotted for agricultural production, built-up areas for the next
five (5) years. The remaining 348 hectares is for large animal, which the farmer own.

5. Other Uses

a. Cemetery

Presently area for cemetery is only 1.0 hectare. It caters barangay Afga and El Rio. It is
proposed that an additional of one (1) hectare for the next five years.
6. Special Use

a. Mining is allotted two (2) hectares for the next five (5) years to cater manual gold panning.
b. Industry

From 0.01 exist to 1.0 hectare for the planning period, to cater domestic uses only, such as
mini sawmill, etc.

Population size, growth rate and average family size as of the latest National Census on
population, barangay Afga has a total of 3,532 populations, with a total household of 784 it has an
average of 5 annually. Barangay Afga has a population density of 1.81person per hectare. By this result,
this barangay is declared as not so crowded barangay. The area is enough for the populace in this
barangay. They have also an enough area for cultivation and or investing new livelihood projects. (See
Table No. 2.)

Table above shows that Barangay Afga, still need assistance on how to increase income in order
to have a decent dwelling facility.
