Small Loop Antennas for Shielding Measurement

The document describes the design and development of small, active and passive loop antennas for measuring shielding effectiveness according to IEEE Std. 299. The antennas have a diameter of approximately 0.3m and are electrostatically shielded and circular in shape. Parameters such as radiation resistance, loss resistance, and reactance were computed and a tuned circuit was designed. Results showed close agreement between designed and achieved values in the frequency range of 9 kHz to 20 MHz, achieving over 71dB, 107dB and 115dB at specific frequencies.

Abstract- The small sized (diameter ~ 0.3m) electro-statically

shielded, loop antennas of circular shape are developed for
testing of shielding effectiveness of shielded chamber at low
frequencies ranging between 9 kHz ≤ f ≤ 20 MHz as per IEEE-
Std.299, MIL-Std-285 and NSA 65-6. These antennas are
developed to be used in both for the active and passive modes
to meet the desired dynamic range of frequency. Equivalent
circuit of loop antenna is considered and parameters such as
radiation resistance, loss resistance, efficiency, external
inductive reactance and internal high frequency reactance for
the given configuration are computed and are used to find out
tuned circuit for the desired frequency region. The computed
value of tuned circuit elements are added to the loop antenna
and S11/S21/Smith plots are used to fine tune parameters of the
tuned circuit. The results obtained shows a close agreement
between the designed/achieved values in frequency region/spot
frequency. Against customer requirement, we have designed
loop antennas along with tuning network and achieved desired
dynamic range better than 71dB, 107dB and 115dB for the
required frequencies of 14 KHz, 150 KHz and 1 MHz
respectively.

7. APPLICATIONS OF LOOP ANTENNA

We have made a shielded anechoic chamber (9.6m ×

4.88m × 3.66m) as per our customer requirement for the
purpose of electronic equipment testing according to
MIL Std.461E[8]. The loop antenna has been designed
for the testing of magnetic shielding effectiveness at 14
KHz, 150 KHz and 1 MHz. The designated magnetic
shielding effectiveness at 14 KHz, 150 KHz and 1 MHz
are 50 dB, 80 dB, 100 dB respectively while we achieved
minimum 71.06 dB, 96.66 dB, 119.38 dB respectively.

CONCLUSION
